Acer Swift 3 14" FHD/i5-7200U/MX150/128GB/8GB/BacklitKB $719.10 (or $899.10 for i7-7500U/256GB) @ The Good Guys eBay

PRONTO

A deal on the Acer Swift 3 laptop from TGG. I got this late last year for home/uni and am really happy with it.

It was the closest I could find to a cross between an ultrabook and a gaming laptop. Yes it's not really an ultrabook, as the screen is 14" with quite big bezels, and weighs 1.7kg, but it's better than all the >2kg 15.6" gaming laptops. It's not really a gaming laptop as well, as the MX150 isn't a 1080ti (or even a 1050ti), but it's still able to run some older titles and eSports titles at a nice FPS at lower settings/resolutions (much better than Intel integrated GPUs ultrabooks could ever do).

Backlit Keyboard is quite nice. A disadvantage is its battery life; real world battery usage under light activities such as browsing and videos is only around 4-5 hours, which isn't impressive at all. But then I always have it at around max brightness or close to it, due to its really glossy screen being reflective of light. Another disadvantage is that mine also runs pretty hot after gaming for a while (maybe it is a MX150 in smaller laptop thing, I remember the Xiaomi Air 13.3" MX150 had major thermal issues), opening it up to repaste the thermals didn't help much with the temps.

To get the i5/128GB or i7/256GB configuration? I personally went with the i5, and don't regret it. Sure the i7 would've been nice, but they're both 7th gen ULV CPUs so the difference won't be massive, and I've found with most games the GPU is still the bottleneck (surprisingly). Extra storage is also nice, but I personally don't think the CPU and larger SSD are worth the $180 difference.

  • i was looking at this listing, not really sure if the acer at $899 is the better model just basing on the cpu.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-Yoga-910-13IKB-13-9-Noteb…

Looking at the i7 Acer ($899 after 10%) vs the Lenovo Yoga you linked ($809 after 10%), the i7 acer will have a slightly better performing CPU, and a significantly much GPU, so the Acer will be better for gaming, image editing etc. If you just want a more ultrabooky laptop, the Lenovo has has a touch screen, better build quality (I'm assuming), longer battery life (I'm assuming), and is lighter. There is no 'better model', just make sure to read reviews of both before making a decision.

    • I'm looking for an ultrabook, something with long battery life and lightweight, moderately powerful, preferably 2 in 1 devices. But 2 in 1 in general have fragile screens from what I've heard.

Fragile screens have been reported in Lenovo 910 too in which screens could be cracked from the mic hole, in some cases even without much excessive force applied. In addition color calibration - yellow tint screen is another issue has been reported.

Fan's lould, but possible turn down the CPU to 'fix' it.

Other than that really nice device.

2 in 1 in general have fragile screens.

Get something like a HP x360. Whichever model you fancy, their screens are tough. Surface Pro and those similar have more fragile screens but if you can find a screen protector then no worries.

Fan's loud, but possible turn down the CPU to 'fix' it.

Sorry but this isn't really going to work. An i3/5/7 core processor needs a fan to run. If you want a fanless processor try the m5 or m7. Sure they won't be as powerful but still got plenty of kick without plenty of noise.
Note: in fanned models, you have to regularly clean the fan otherwise it'll get noisier when it's dirtier.

        • @pennypincher98: Thank you for the suggestion. I really like Hp Spectre x360 and had considered buying one. But then I found stuff like this:
          https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Tou…

May be newer models have this fragile screen issue fixed. I don't know, but HP would not officially speak out as to which models are affected. I don't want to take my chances, screens are expensive.

The loudsy fan issue, particularly for 910, is a bit more distinctive than that. It was reported that they could get consistently loud even when not under heavy load.
          Eg.
          https://duckduckgo.com/?q=lenovo+910+loud+fan&t=ffab&ia=web

@randolpg: Thank you for the suggestion, I'm keen on that one too. Perhaps preferably ones with warranties.

        • +1

@kiwn: that's strange, first I have ever heard of this. I accidentally swiped my x360 along the desk once - straight into a wall and no cracks. The only thing that happened was 2 dead pixels up the top left. That wasn't to say I wasn't passing bricks though!
Btw I have a lenovo now - upgraded.

Maybe the 910 has a problem, but in my opinion all fanned computer I have/had/tested sound like they are going to take off!

        • Not the same person but I'm looking for something similar minus the 2 in 1. I'm looking at the xiaomi notebook pro but are there any other suggestions you would recommend?

        • @cerealz: something similar but different ends up not being that similar anymore.. Sorry but you'll have to say what you want or wait for another member - I'm not overly knowledgeable on normal laptops.

        • @cerealz:
For a regular clamshell Asus UX430UA would be my choice. Lightweight, 14", good specs, long battery life, no dedicated GPU.
Otherwise UX430UN has MX150, but at a different price range.

Xiaomi notebook pro is heavy stuff, almost 2kg. Since you don't seem to mind the weight, your option would probably be wider than mine.

lenovo 710s is where it's at.. usually can find on amazon for around $650

    • Note yoga one is used vs this one which is new

There is the option to go for the 8th gen i5, Which goes for around 1k. Downside is there is no warranty.(from amazon)

    • +2

Yeah good point, I nearly got the Amazon one in this deal, but held off because of warranty issues (15% of reviews on Amazon are 1-star, all DOA related). The 8th Gen i5-would've been really nice though being Quad-Core compared to the 7th Gen Dual-Core.

  • +3

Nice deal, but 8th gen CPUs are hard to pass up IMO.

  • +2

If only it didn't have a glossy display. I hate the reflections. Does anyone know of any brand/way to get/apply a matte anti-glare screen protector for laptops that does ruin the detail with grainy rainbow pixels?

    • +1

Just got a $15 one off eBay ages ago for my HP, best $15 I ever spent

      • Can you share any brand, model info? I tried cheap matte anti-glare screen protectors for a phone and tablet before and hated them because they were very grainy like https://www.canaloo.com/blogs/news/17147667-matte-anti-glare…. I could get used to it for watching videos as the grain is uniform but for high density DPI text and graphics they are annoying/bad.

I got the i5 model of this a month ago.
Agree battery life only about 5 hours on full brightness but that’s not too bad.
Also, mine is dead silent, fan is quiet even on games and haven’t had any issues with heat, so might have been lucky.
TPM chip and fingerprint reader is a bonus.

    • +1

Nice to hear that yours runs well, looks like it might've been a hardware issue for me. Integrated graphics is fine, but as soon as I'm running games on the MX150, the unit is already hot and fans are at max after around 10 min, and then by the 20 min mark thermal throttling has kicked in and I get FPS drops/stutters (to the point that I'm now taking breaks often instead of going at it for hours on end so it may be a blessing in disguise).

Edit: I just searched the issue up and a few people have sent it back to Acer and got the fan issue fixed successfully. Want to contact Acer support, but I scratched the edges of the Swift pretty badly when I repasted the thermals (that thing was near impossible to pry open), so the warranty is probably void.

For those after productivity, I think this is better https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1361153-REG/asus_s510…

Faster processor, bigger screen, lighter weight. The only downside I think is slower gpu.

    • +3

B&H is US though, after shipping and taxes it's US $1022 (~AU $1292). Weight of the Vivobook and the Swift are around the same. There have been similar local deals with warranty such as this.

Amazon US also has a decent Vivobook with an 8th Gen i5, works out to be just under $700 AUD incl shipping.

      • +1

Sometimes the dollar drop a little bit. U only need 0.2% drop to save tax and have total $1000 aud

      • +1

        Cons:
        Horrible keyboard flex
The max screen brightness isn't very bright
        HDD instead of SSD
        No backlit keyboard
Horrible light bleed from the top edge of the screen
No ventilation at bottom of laptop

        • To be fair, the max brightness of the Acer Swift is also isn't really bright, and ventilation isn't great either (at least for me as it easily overheats). HDD can be replaced by SSD. But yeah the flex and the bleeding isn't nice, but that is what you get with many entry level laptops. I'd probably get it if I was after a laptop with processing power (due to budgetary constraints) and pray for a unit with little to no bleeding, there aren't many cheaper 8th gen laptops out there.

        • Are you referring to the Asus or the Acer?
The Asus does have backlit keyboard and SSD. 128gb m.2 and 1tb 2.5"

    • Would you suggest this over the xiaomi notebook pro? Ii'm in it for the same reasons plus battery life.

      • Depends, Asus and Acer warranty are international. Xiaomi warranty is non-existent.

Apart from that the difference is purely academic.

Great deal considering I bought the i5 version for $927 in December last year. Works well as a portable gaming machine for less intensive titles.

  • +1

Looking to sell my core i3 surface pro 3 and buy this. Worth it?

    • Without knowing much about your other device I’d say yes. Imo great build quality (for Acer) and great specs for price. Loving mine!

  • +1

Peoples thoughts on the Acer i7 256GB SSD vs the latest offering of the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 13.3 ?

    • I was considering the Mi Air but decided I'd rather have the local warranty (price matched Bing Lee at JB HiFi a month ago).

Same graphics card, though the processor would have been 8th gen for a similar price. Not worth the dealing with warranty for faults imo, it's hard enough already.

I'm happy with the Acer i7, having three USB ports vs two will be great for my usage. Battery life beats my old Surface Pro 3 so no complaints there. People say the screen backlight on it is not bright enough, it hasn't been a problem for me so far.

  • Any laptops for half the price, around $350?
