  • Enjoy greater scope

Nice try on the puns, Kogan.

Serious note, I wonder how these actually perform even as a day to day monitor.

I’ve got a LG 35” ultra wide. Perfect for me as I’m always using Office and web.

I’ve never gamed on it or used it for video/photo work etc. I’ve read that it sucks for those things and using it I can see why.

But as my daily display for my usage it’s perfect.

  • This screen any good?

    • Only as a digital photoframe

    6ms
    VA Panel
    1080

I would never consider one of these for myself, but for that price? If I was buying in that price range I would at the very least shortlist it.

    • I'd rather pay $650 or so for a Korean IPS panel running 3440*1440@75hz (overclock to 90-100hz).

      • link?

      • +2

But it's almost twice as much …

      • +1

The issue with korea crossover is the chance of getting dead pixels as stated by the seller:

        About pixel warranty policy
The item may have some dead/stuck/faulty pixels.
There's no problem using monitor with these.
Please be aware that dead/stuck/faulty pixels CANNOT be the reason for return/refund or exchange.

even the listings that has "[Perfect] Pixels" the disclaimer reads:

With Perfect pixel option, 0 ~ 3 dead pixel is possible.
We define dead pixel as 'bright dot' in the dark.
Dark dot and stuck pixel is NOT CONSIDERED as dead pixel. BRIGHT DOT ONLY

Since Kogan is under Australian consumer law you can request an exchange for a newer or refund and also since it is a Kogan branded item you are eligible for the 14 Day Money Back Guarantee minus shipping where as the ebay seller has explicitly mentioned there could be dead pixel in its ebay selling page which is essentially the buyer agreeing to a contract acknowledging that..

P.S They do mention this though from dream-selller

        *HOWEVER, DON'T GET THIS WRONG
THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE SHIP THE MONITOR
EVEN IF WE FOUND SOME DEAD PIXELS DURING Q.C
IF THERE IS A DEAD PIXEL, WE DON'T SHIP. NO WORRIES GUYS
        ALL MONITOR SHIPPED AFTER Q.C

        • What's your point? Kogan has a policy too, and won't consider two stuck pixels to be a fault. https://www.kogan.com/au/help/what-is-your-stuck-and-dead-pi…

        • +1

Kogan pays for the return if its more than two pixels stuck since it is considered warranty issue, if you dont like the monitor within 2 weeks you can return it and get a refund.

Since its only to south melbourne, which is about 20 bucks with australia post, it is easier warranty for however many years you add on checkout. Any issues with Kogan you can just bring it up with ACCC.

Where as the ebay one you are on your own, you have to send it back to the country of origin in this case South Korea which will cost from 41+ bucks and you can only hope that the item makes it and that the seller actually returns it back. The only method of communication is with ebay messaging.

I know Crossover monitors have been praised as excellent products when they work, but there are various forums threads with someone worrying and complaining about flicker and dead pixels after receiving them. I'm just detailing the risk, instead of just saying just buy it because someone in the internet says it is good.

        • @zrorz: Your point seems to be that it is not about the pixels, it's about the return shipping. So that makes me say: Don't paste the pixel policy if you are talking about return shipping cost. Anyway the return shipping cost is a valid point, so it should be taken into account.

        • +1

          @twocsies:

Also worth noting that if you enable "refunded returns" with Paypal, they will pay up to $45 for return shipping.

      • The thing is, if you can only spend 400-odd on a monitor then one would assume you're not exactly running a high end expensive machine either, an IPS monitor at that resolution you're quoting might be too difficult to run for video games etc given the rest of the system specs for someone considering a Kogan monitor. It all has to balance out. I can't knock the Crossover monitors myself, I had three of their 27" IPS monitors for 7 years before I sold them on, they all had one or two dead pixels but I mean hell, there were over 3.6 million of them I forgot they were even there after a couple weeks I don't get the obsession with dead pixels.

  • I am gonna sell my LG 3440x1440p now!! lol

    • So going from one of the best display makers to one of the worst… makes sense!

      • you mean 'was'.

        • LG gone downhill?

        • +1

No, LG make great panels. If you buy ultrawide your choices are either Samsung or LG right now. LG IPS are currently the best panels. Asus, Acer and Dell (Alienware) are using them for the top tier gaming offerings.

Samsung have come a long way in the last few years but they are still chasing LG. Unfortunately they opted for VA which doesn't compare to IPS, hopefully they move to IPS soon or iron out the issues with VA.

That being said LG will still likely hold the crown with the 5K HDR ultrawide IPS panels on the way.

          @boredofficeworker:
IPS panels in my view aren't the best, as I prefer better contrast and brightness which VA panels have, plus better colour gradation and colour accuracy. IPS has better viewing angles (pointless for a monitor!) and sync capabilities as they don't have the processing that VA panels have so the picture isn't as good which means it can use less lag. It's always a compromise either way you look at it…

        • +1

@Monstalova: Colour accuracy is usually better on IPS panels. :)

        • -1

          @boredofficeworker:
Only for still pictures, if it's moving then the colour washes away. So maybe for photo editing it will be great but for gaming or movies never.

        • +1

@Monstalova: The colours don't "wash away" when they move, I'm not sure what makes you think that. Response times are also generally better on IPS panels. If you compare apples for apples (the same specs on both panels eg: 4K HDR/60Hz IPS vs VA) generally the IPS will be better at response/colour/viewing angles, and the VA will be better at panel uniformity/contrast/latency. IPS have come so far in recent years for gaming that many of the downfalls are almost negligible unless you solely play FPS games (in which case you will want a TN anyway).

        • @boredofficeworker: research and experience. I work in a big brand tv company and also calibrate. Your personal preference doesn't make it fact. There's a full array VA panel down to 0.01 lag. VA panels would be very similar to IPS in lag if they didn't have all the extra processing to make a better picture, which cannot be said for IPS - their contrast sits at a max of around 2000:1 where VA gets to over 11000:1. Brightness is the same thing, max is around 400 nits and drops down more as it can't sustain it for long. Sony has just made a TV at 10,000 nits. IPS panel doesn't have the contrast and brightness to show the full colour gamut therefore can't be accurate and loses it gradients. Even when it pushes it's low brightness to the max it results in heavy light blooming and flashlighting. There's a reason why the TV industry choose to work on VA panels for their high end models… Oh yeah there's also the dreaded IPS glow. IPS has better sync capabilities (the gap is closing fast though!) everything else is easily won by VA for a monitor. It's literally like night and day between them. All it says to me is that you haven't experienced a proper high end VA panel. If you had we wouldn't be having this conversation!

        • +1

          @Monstalova:

I'm sorry but saying that there is a panel which can do x or y doesn't really make it the reality of the current market. If you want to go down that path, Panasonic has created an IPS panel capable of 1 million to 1 contrast at 1000 nits brightness. That's fantastic in theory, but the current market is nothing close to that. VA tops about 3000:1 for most professional/gaming monitors on the market and the brightness is actually higher on IPS panels. You say the TV industry chose to move to VA for high-end panels, but again, this depends on the TV in question. To take your example Sony for example, the X8000E is IPS while the X8000D is VA, and the top of the line X1A uses neither, it uses OLED. That being said TV's and monitors are different beasts, and while they share many aspects, you can't really compare them apples for apples. As for saying "you haven't experienced a proper high end VA panel", actually I've used both Samsung's 49" CGH90, and the 34" LS34E790C. Both of these disappointed me in terms of picture quality and text readability when compared with my PG348Q and Dell Ultrasharp panels. I'm sure the next generation will come much closer to IPS, but then IPS will likely see a boost too. Better yet would be OLED gaming monitors, if they can figure out a way to deal with burn-in that is suitable for PC's.

        • -1

@boredofficeworker: You just talked about mid range TV's in the Sonys?? I said high end! If we go high end IPS vs high end VA TV. It's 1423:1 contrast vs 11000:1 - LG SJ8500 & Sony Z9D. There is no real high end IPS as the specs don't allow it to compete with the VA. Are you crazy saying you can't compare TV's to monitors?!? Are you just trying to make excuses now? Because if we include the best TV's they make you lose the argument
.. Panasonic concept is not 1 million to 1 contrast. It's 10000:1 native. Love how you avoided all the points from before and now saying IPS gets brighter than VA? It's like talking with a deluded Arkham inmate!

        • @Monstalova: If anandtech got it wrong by a factor of 10, I apologise. Did you mean the ZD9… as in the 2016 Flagship they aren't making anymore? Cool story bro. This isn't worth it, not going to bother with further replies.

    It's sold out now OP.

Mine arrived today, AMA if anyone's curious. I'm not that techy so keep it layman.

First impressions: Pretty nice. First 144hz monitor for me so I'm blown away.

    • +3

      Back in stock.

    • +1

What hardware are you powering it with? I have a GeForce card which doesn't work with FreeSync but I'm trying to see whether or not it's still worth it.

      • +2

GTX 980, G-Sync monitors are crazy expensive. I haven’t noticed any tearing. Probably because I’m probably not pushing that high of an FPS. Still silky smooth

        • Yeah it's a hefty premium for G-Sync. Sometimes makes me regret getting GeForce. Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty tempted to get one of these.

        • +1

@tonyamazing: So after testing it a bit more in games and ufo tests, this monitor does suffer from quite a bit of ghosting. If you're a serious gamer, this may not be right for you but otherwise it's fine for casual gaming.

        • @itevenhasawatermark:
Ditto. Overdrive settings don't seem to do much either to help.
Btw do you also have no option to change the red back LED strips? The manual says it has different colours but my menus look completely different.

        • @TofuTaicho: yeah no options for the LED light colour hahahaha

    • +1

      Does it have VESA support?

      • I'm trying to figure out aswell.

  • I have a gtx 1060 3gb, do you think this would handle it alright?

  • +1

Bit the bullet despite no reviews - just received today. Haven't been able to put it through it's paces yet on a GTX 1060 6GB.
Noticeable ghosting/trailing when moving cursor rapidly in windows. NVIDIA panel shows it is running at 144hz though. Will have to play with settings abit more though - the manual settings are different to that on the actual monitor OSD.

    • Hey where abouts do you live? Just curious how long mine will take to get here. (Toowoomba)

      • Pakenham (VIC)

          s h.it on my d i.ck… I want it rigghhhhtttt nooooooooooowwwwwwww!!!!!

        • +1

@nymiiboii: Have you received it yet? I'm from Toowoomba, too also interested in getting one. The stock is back now but will only last another day or two before the price goes up.
I'm not a heavy gamer, mostly browsing the internet and watching some drama/movies, would you guys recommend it?

        • @davidl820: Hey mate, I have not received it yet so I sent them an email about it only to find out that they never even sent it. They said they would be sending it in the next 24-48 hours. Just my luck.

  • Mine should be here tomorrow or day after, dm for questions (75hz model)

    • You sure? it's a weekend, usually ships business days.

      • I ordered it on the 17th, it is estimated to come tomorrow.

    • Has it arrived yet? And how do you find it in general? Does it worth the money?

      • Arrived this afternoon. It is f**king awesome! I honestly cannot convey how amazing it is, and for the price it is impeccable. My only complaints are:

-Although it features tilt adjustment it does not feature height adjustment
-Shipping delays, but i was given a $10 evoucher for the 1 day delay
-Slight bit of scratching on the frame-
-Pixels are quite easy to make out but who really cares

Other than that it is amazing and i cannot recommend it enough.

        • Have you tried gaming on it? If so, how does it run?

        • @nymiiboii: Runs well, not great but by that i mean anyone who isnt some e-sports tryhard should find it very good for gaming.

        • Can you attach a picture of it?
