      +1, just checked myself! I would never have believed you could suck enough juice out of a USB 2.0 port to power a burner, but there you go, they've done it! ;)

        There are plenty of USB-powered units from Samsung, LG, etc. They use a Y cable so they can connect to 2xUSB if the computer hasn't got enough grunt for burning from just one USB.

          It all depends on the laptop. I know some older Toshibas were very strict about adhering to the official USB standard of 500mA limit per port. Even then, the device is supposed to request the 500mA supply, which a Y-cable doesn't do.
