  • Wow that’s cheap. I currently use an external powered drive to add space to my Mac mini which is used as a plex media server. Hasn’t missed a beat in about 4 years. Would this being non powered be just as suitable?

    • yes

    • +1

You're lucky then. My 4TB was recently RMA'd after very little use (only wrote to it 3-4 times - backup drive only, not everyday use). System was hanging, transfer speeds fluctuating, drive not being recognised, and Seatools tests failing. Got a Recertified drive sent to me, and well, on the very first use, with not even 1TB written to it, very similar issues again. I began to suspect an issue with either My PC or the USB cables, but nope, changed all the variables, drive is likely another dud. I'm done with Seagates… Though I will say their RMA process is ridiculously fast. Bad drive received, and within hours a replacement had left Singapore…

The price per Gigabyte on these is obviously very attractive which is what drew me to buy it from an Amazon deal on here in the first place. But in hindsight I wish I paid an extra $50 or thereabouts and bought a 4TB 3.5" drive and a good quality external enclosure. Obviously not as portable, but I'd suspect it'd have been far more reliable for my intended use.

      • Have always had a bad run with those 're-certified' or repaired drives that they send out as a replacement.

        • Yeah makes you wonder how bad they were in the first place. A new one would have been nice, but given mine was over 18 months old I guess that was wishful thinking. New ones probably only go to ones that get RMA'd shortly after purchase.

I have over 30 of these 4&5TB drives and never had one fail.

How would it be more reliable? You're looking at an extreme set of circumstances and assuming it's the norm.

      • I went with Seagate 4 TB ironwolf and a Vantec enclosure … wanted the reliability of a NAS drive.

  • Yeah had 2 Seagate external drives (2TB and 4TB) just died within weeks of each other. Had better luck with WD/Samsung/Hitachi drives.

  • US $119.99+US $7 Delivery?

  • just a warning ….. had a very hard time formatting for mac….. I wouldn't recommend for an my mac user.

  • you can buy the same item at $259 at office jokes……

  • Same price currently for the sliver version https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LXF3C7Z/ref=ox_sc_mini_…
