  • Wow good price! Just worried on the warranty side…

    • +6

Yeah watch out for warranty. I have had to return 3 of them..

      • Arrg, what's going wrong with them?

  • Are any of the wireless channels limited due to it being an import?

    • Usually that will be governed by the country you choose in the setup process

    • Yes, if from USA; no, otherwise. Subject well covered.

I'd buy locally if you can. Routers run 24/7 and most of them run hot, which means a good chance of early failure.

    • Agree with this. Had Asus rtn56u fail on me. Best to buy local

run hot, which means a good chance of early failure.

      Incorrect.

  • is this worth is if my nbn speed is only around 10mbps?

    • +1

No unless you have many devices like 10-20+ minimum but even then a sub $100 AUD router will do.

      • +2

Don't let the self professed Guru's over at Whirlpool hear you talking like that.

      • Yup agree, we have an average of 7 devices and we dont need this device

When my family visit (which is often) and stay with us we have about 16-18 devices and this powers through it
        Never had any issues

    • More like for >200mbps

    • Also gumtree anything you might need. Heaps cheaper and should still work as normal. Just inspect it if you can beforehand or talk with the owner in detail and depth about the product/router.

  • It's cheaper on eBay with an Aussie based seller with a stire. I'd post the link but it keeps unpublished my comment.

    • Please share.

      • Not hard to search. I put in the model and searched Google. Was the first link. I don't I can on yet. 279 including shipping from Melbourne

        • Cheapest I can find is $377

    • Send pm please

    • Pls can you pm me link too.

    • The description for the $274 one is a bit odd, ie. it's at least ex-display:

"The firmware may be upgraded to a non-official version (Merlin for example) by the OEM suppliers/the store owner for testing/verification/demonstration purposes."

you didn't read the directions, you need to do delicate cycle!

  • I've been using this router for about 3 years now and I've had no issues. I run Merlin on it and set it up to reboot every night.

  • I have had this router for nearly 2 years now.

I have been running the Merlin firmware on it for a better part of those 2 years.

Great bit of kit. We have multiple wired and wireless devices and eveything connects well. Performance wise I have no complaints whatsoever, it is super fast even with multiple devices downloading linux isos and watching netfflix and other streaming services all at the same time, with bandwidth to spare.

My only gripe with it is that it runs really hot. This is despite it being in a well ventilated location.
It runs hot enough to warm the room up (unfortunately ive got mine in a bed room, 6x4m) a couple degrees higher (with windows closed) compared to adjacent rooms. I'm in Brisbane and in winter this is great as you dont need a room heater. But in summer it is very bad. I was so concerned with the temperature of this router running at 80 degrees C (in summer), that I went and bought a DeepCool Windpal-FS laptop cooler which was selling for $19 at the time. That seems to have helped and it has bought the temperature down to about 60 degrees.

And thanks to ozBargain and this deal posted recently , I decided to invest in aircon to cool my router ! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/362605
    Hope it helps.

Running hot doesn't do any harm to the device.

      • Running hot doesn't do any harm to the device.

        thanks for that opinion.

Can you please let Samsung know that their Samsung Note 7 phone recall was un-necessary due to the overheating of the battery, multiple explosions worldwide and subsequent worldwide recall.

Granted, we are talking about a router that doesn't have a battery in it, but surely its a bit pointless to authoritively just say cooling is un-necessary for "any device" because running hot doesnt do any harm at all, isn't it ?
