  • It was about $1600 when other store put on sale.

    • Yes, but that has come up once a year. I don’t want to wait and wait for this deal to come up again.

  • Hmmm, buy this or spend the same money on 503 amazing coffees made by my local cafe down the street…
(not to mention cost of additional required coffee beans/milk/sugar/water/electricity/time/etc to use the machine)

    • +2

If you drink two cups of coffee a day you have just over 8 months supply, then what?

I am guessing there is a reason people buy ovens, microwaves, etc and not use the money for takeout.

      • My hubby drives to our local each morning and buys me a coffee - it’s $6 so I figure it is less than a year to justify this purchase.

        • +1

Every single coffee I've purchased after getting a machine similar to this doesn't even compare.

With the right beans, some patience and practice, your local will start tasting like mud.

        • Yep and then you start seeing all the bad things done in cafes - resteaming the previous customers milk, never adjusting the grind according to how it pours, pouring long after it’s gone blonde so you get a lot of bitter water. You feel like fighting your way through and DIY.

    • I bough a younger brother - Dual Boiler.
Turned out amazing coffee made by local cafe is pretty average. :)

  • Cant believe the price of the new model approx $3400 just because of the full touch screen. Looks the same otherwise

  • Out of interest, how do these high end machines compare to the EM7000?

    • +1

Love my EM7000. With the Oracle, you'll be about $1000 out of pocket, and have a machine that does pretty much the same thing, if not less (I say that as someone who likes the hands on experience). The internal grinder with automatic tamper is a gimmick, and built for the same market as a fully automated machine.
I wouldn't consider this, or any Breville / Sunbeam machine, a high end machine. I've seen the Oracle praised as a great alternative to a Nespresso machine - nuff said.

      • +1

It’s nothing like a pod machine. The grind and tamp is about consistency and yes, automation, not a gimmick, it works (though sometimes the tamp doesn’t, particularly with some beans).

What it is is a very easy way to get a good cafe quality cup.

      • "I've seen the Oracle praised as a great alternative to a Nespresso machine - nuff said."

Have you really? Could you supply the source for this?

        • Almost any espresso machine is a great alternative to pods. Pods have little coffee and really pathetic milk steaming. The advantage they have is variety of beans.

      • I too love my EM7000. Provided you are using fresh and good beans, I couldn't imagine making a better cup of coffee. Hence why I was curious what these high end machines are about.

  • I have a $200 sunbeam machine, it does the perfect crema and frothy milk, does it differ at all in end product to if I used something this expensive?

    • not really. If you can get a good coffee out of your existing machine, just do that.

I'm sure this would pull a better shot, but ,if you're happy with yours, no need to upgrade.

      • It is hard to get really well steamed milk out of cheaper machines (micro foam, not just foam). Also more expensive ones have larger coffee capacity for each pour so you can do a cafe strength cup.

  • I paid a bit less than that more than 3 years ago.

  • I would honestly recommend a Bes920 and smart grinder combo if you dont mind the extra space. It's cheaper and has more fine grained controls.

Granted, if you only want one machine, this is it.

The Bes920 and grinder can be had for about $800 if your're patient ($639 + $169)

See here for $639 machine: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350211
    And here for grinder: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/361373

I honestly don't think paying more than double that is worth it to save on a little space.

    • Me too. (Even though I have the 980). The 920 combo is better bang for buck. A bit more work and no auto option like the 980, but should get as good a result.

      • I would say, once you become proficient, you can probably get a better shot out of the 920.

I spent ages getting it right, playing with grinds and beans and tamp pressure. At one point I was questioning my decision to go full manual.

After much frigging around, I can genuinely say I pull a better coffee than my bro-in-laws 980 in auto mode.

Granted, if you can't be stuffed, the 980 is a weapon.

        • yeah i have the 920, and my in-laws have the 980. they always say how nice our coffee is and we don't like theirs at all. then again i do weigh the basket prior to each shot

        • That’s down to the making and beans, not the machines.

  • They have already sold out 😔

    • +1

Well, according to everyone above it’s a rip off at that price anyway so just hold off until the next deal - shouldn’t be too far off with Mother’s Day around the corner 😉

      • I don’t think anyone said that. There is a question wether the 920 is better value if you’re prepared to do more of the work. If you want a great combination of ease of production and a great result the 980 at that price is very good.

      • Thanks LXE3 👍🏻

        • Good Guys have an EBay sale tomorrow and the Oracle will be 20% off again - make sure you do cash rewards as well - the extra 1% is calculated on the full price, so it’s another $22 off the 20%.
