  question: if one leaves this drive and keeps in storage for backup
  does that make it unlikely to fail since it is rarely used
  can a hdd just die from non usage?

    I've often wondered this. There would have to be some physical degradation of the moving parts. I'm not sure how fast that happens. HDDs are sealed pretty well, but then i'd be pretty surprised if you used this in 15 years and still worked fine. I dunno. I'm just a farmer.

      I've had 4 out of 6 WD Green 2TB drives die on me, and they were used to archive data only. I'd only them use sparingly. After a long gap of 4 years of not using them, they died, just like that, no clicking noise. On the other hand, my 1TB black caviar from 2010 is still running, and I bought that one from vietnam. My seagate 256GB from 2004 is still running too. Maybe if you power them up once every few months that should keep them operating?

        Amazing how idle drives can just die

        This is why it’s always good to have 2 copies of every important file on 2 drives at 2 locations in case of fire or theft etc
