How to Get Refund for Office Cake?

How can I get the new office girl to give me back the money she owes me? read on …

We have a birthday tradition where everyone including the boss puts in ten bucks for a birthday cake on a birthday. Then at 2pm we go to the birthday table and give the cake and we all get a slice to eat.

I am working there 1 and a half years no complains from me at all.

Then the boss gets a new assistant girl. Yesterday we all gave her ten bucks for a guys cake. 2pm rolls around and the cake isnt the best one caramel mud cake … but I eat it anyway.

But when I was making tea in the kitchen later guess what I saw in the bin … a docket for the cake. I am curious guy and I took it out to read it. Total cost for medium glucose free caramel cake was $63.50 but there were 8 of us who gave money in the office.

"What happened to the $17.50?" I asked the girl. She was very defensive that I brought it up, and said that she is allowed to keep it because she spent her lunch break to drive her car and get the cake.

I think if I told the boss she would be fired in an instance, but I am holding back because I don't want to look bad.

Whats the best way to deal with this? I'd be happy enough if she just gave me some small refund, 5 bucks?

EDIT: I saw some one say to put the docket on the bosses desk and keep photographs of it just in case. Honestly this is exactly what I wanted to hear. I am thinking of doing it after everyone leaves 5pm today. Some people said that the boss could take it the wrong way, so I am definitely not going to put my name on it, just anonymously put the docket there.

EDIT: for some reason no one has gone home yet, i will wait a bit more until i'm sure they are gone. I have some second thoughts after what everyone said about me only getting 2 bucks not 5 bucks or more, but I should trust my gut instincts to do the right thing.

edit didnt give docket to boss, and im getting a later train home. feel sick thinking about this whole thing. i will ask my life partner what they think and maybe come in early tomorrow morning and give docket then.

You should be fired for misusing your work time for inane shit.

    This guy should resign

  • I'm with you OP. I'd be taken aback if someone decided the leftover was theirs with no prior consultation.

    • What if they asked/consulted first?

Then I'd be ok with it. Totally makes sense if the girl takes her own lunch break and her own car to go and get a cake for everyone at work, that she should get covered for it. But if she just decides that she'll cover herself for it by "absorbing" the excess…well, that doesn't sit right with me.

geeezzzz…….. lucky im not working with you

  • You are going to give yourself a heart attack worrying about this!

    • Great, as it'll only enrich the gene pool.

You should make a stand in front of everyone in your workplace like you have done here, when you do it in person everyone will see that you are right and rally behind you %100

  • This is one of the reasons I chose to leave the workplace and work for myself. Had enough of petty crap like this.

      any vacancies?

      • If you don't mind an environment with low morale and little praise, then I'm sure they can find a spot for you :)
Hope you weren't expecting too much coin either..

your worried about not getting your $2 back? id be more dissapointed you spent $10 on a slice of crappy cake!

    DUDUDEE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Are you actually just a bored student with a troll account?
If so, well played sir, well played.

Here's a solution. Next time buy an $80 cake. Cut it into 16 pieces and take 3 slices. $5 profit

When I hire people, I make sure their birthday has just passed, to save money.

    • +3

And let them go just before?

    • Make sure you discard half the pile too, you don't want unlucky people

  • +2

If I was the boss, I would fire you and give the new office a warning. What a disgrace of a human

  • This is the best thing I have ever read on this site.

    • +1

Did you read the sibling gift buying one?

      • +1

Or the “I don’t park when asked @maccas”

  • +4

that's ridiculous. she should give you a refund after accounting for petrol, but only if you calculate the mileage based on driving without aircon or cruise control and based on petrol price for the day if she filled up out of town and not on the highway

    • +1

Factor in the weight of the cake and subtract any corners she couldn’t cut… The cake would have to be kept cool, so only allow for OP’s 1/8th portion of the aircon being used…

  • +1

so the assistant girl got a FREE slice of cake AND $6.50 cash. You got ripped off OP.

    • +1

Got paid extra for taking her lunch break too.

  • +4

    I'd fire you.

You fail to take into account someone incurred costs to get the cake.

The person probably bought the cake closest to the price.

    You're stressed out over a $17.50 between 8 people.

You want a $5 refund even though you acknowledge 8 people had a share in the $17.50 overpaid.

You're making a joyous occasion into an awkward one.

You are considering damaging someone's livelihood for your vigilante fancy.

    I would fire you.

  • I just feel sorry for your life partner…

    • +1

      Which hand?

      • +1

i will ask my life partner what they think …..

OP is really not good at math, he is not even counting his number of partners right.

  • I will tell you what, next time you buy the cake alright!?

    Let me guess? Public Service?

  • +1

You typed all that because you were shortchanged 2 bucks?

  • Forced office cake things share (profanity) stupid. Everyone gets around, pretends they don’t hate each other, awkward idle chat until it’s PC to leave.

Maybe I just work with a bunch of losers.

  • Glad i dont work with morons like you

  • +1

I'm not sure if it's already been pointed out but I just wanted to say that OP took some time during work hours to write all of this on OzB. Arguably this is theft of company's funds, and probably worth way more than $2 or $5.

  • I think if I told the boss she would be fired in an instance

ROFL. You are either a troll or have no clue

  • +1

Usually I would say that this post is trolling….but given the stupidity I've seen recently, I don't think so.

  • Post of the year.

  • "I am working there 1 and a half years no complains from me at all."

Let's see what your co-workers have to say…
