  • 0.90Ghz? Wait what?

    • +1

      LOL yeah they have higher turbo frequencies though, just have low base rates to save power. Even so, it's not that fast at only 2.2ghz

    • From the review linked above by bdl "The base frequency is just 0.9 GHz, but the processor can reach up to 2.2 GHz (2 GHz for two cores) via Turbo Boost."

      • +1

        Impressive, so it can reach Pentium 4 clock speeds in turbo mode

        ..for a few seconds until it thermal throttling kicks in

  • m3-6Y30/4GB/128GB SSD $327.20

    This set up is kind of confusing. The SSD is going to be the only thing with an alright speed…
    Either, make a cheaper storage and sell for cheaper or have more ram and an m5 or m7 and sell for a bit more.

  • +1

    If you want a bit of higher spec (processor) you could go with this

    • Can either of them do 4Kx30Hz over HDMI?

      • +1

        Max resolution: 4096@2304@24Hz

    • not full HD tho :(

      • +1

        yeah but cheaper and got an i5

    • Great deal on that model, now sold out, 9 sold today. Would have liked the 14"/i5 toutch model.

        I'll sell you mine I bought this morning… for a finders fee of course :)

        • May I ask why you changed your mind?

          @ozhunter68:
          I didn't, I'm stoked. Just a lame joke.

          @damoo:

          I would be too at that price. Just had a look at The Good Guys ebay laptop range and even if no price increases happen, nothing get's close.

          Enjoy :-)

  • so either ssd with m3-6Y30 or i5-6200U with 1TB HDD…….

    • +1

      or either still in stock or out of stock….

  • that's one shitty configuration

  • Have a 700-11ISK in a slightly different config. Physically it's a really solid-feeling laptop that's a pleasure to carry around, with nice grippy top and bottom surfaces that don't show fingerprints, along with rubberised edges.

    Main weaknesss is probably battery life, and an exceedingly annoying issue with the escape/function keys which might've been a deal killer if I'd known about it before purchase.

    I received a PM today asking for a university laptop. If anyone else is looking for a cheap Dell Latitude 14 (5480) with some semi-decent specifications, this one costs $639.20 and it features a Kaby lake 7th Gen Core i5, 128GB M.2 SSD, and full HD display

    It weighs 1.6 KG — neither is it light nor overly heavy and it has all the ports you could possibly want, including USB Type C, 3 USB ports, and dedicated Ethernet and legacy VGA. Also runs Win10 Pro

    Downside is that it's specced with a smaller battery, so I think the runtime is only going to be 5 hours, so you will need a charger for longer days. You can probably replace the battery yourself with a bigger 4 cell 68 whr model.

  • I had the same laptop which I bought from Amazon 2 years ago. It is a special edition in Orange colour with 8gb RAM. In to 4 months, bang, cracked the screen (dropped). Even though the touch screen doesn't work (and a crack across the screen) machine still works fine. I paid around $700 for that.

  • This is the same config as my Surface Pro 4 - Intel Core m3-6Y30, 4Gb ram, 128GB SSD. That thing worked perfectly fine for Netflix, Firefox, Evernote, Word and even drawing (Autodesk Sketchbook). Never skipped a beat. I never felt like it was too sluggish. I did tweak Firefox for low memory usage, but still had a great experience with it.

    For a cheap second laptop for the kids to bash around, this should be more than adequate.
