no 320i is going to have athletic character and promise dynamic driving.

  • Don't bother with the 320i. The 420i I had for a day was quite disappointing. The 430i on the other hand was a totally different beast

  • +5

Thanks, bought one on my way to Aldi.

  • +1

    I up voted for lols
    nice post OP

  • Pulled the trigger and bought 3, thanks OP.

  • -3

    Thanks OP, bought 5

Actually no, gonna wait for a ebay sitewide 10% off first for a better deal

  • Funny that this came up - I was just driving behind a 330 wagon and was wondering how much they cost - assumed around 80k so I guess this is cheapish - what’s the performance difference between a 335 and a 330 anyway? Regardless, not sure I’ll ever be able to justify more then 50k on a car…

    • 335 is 3L turbo, 330 is 2L. In other words it will eat 330 for breakfast.

      • Ah, I figured it was 3.0litre in-line 6 or something….does the number not mean anything anymore..?

        • Not on the new system. Much easier before. Now the proper car starts with 4, ie. 140, 340,540, etc

  • +1

Reckon Electric vehicle would be mad by comparison. BMW will be so outdated.
Volvo has moved over to EV production. Next will be hydrogen vehicles and then….?

    • +1

Hydrogen will never be a commercial prospect.

    • +1

Hydrogen isnt the next step. Better batteries or super caps would be.

      • +1

BMW made EVs and hybrids very early on. I have a 27 years old 5 series, they made a hybrid just before it which had lead acid batteries filling the engine bay. Took balls. But they always thought Hydrogen would be the winner, and have had the world's most extensive Hydrogen R&D going on since the early nineties, if not before.

All the German auto companies did EV, Ferdinand Porsche made a battery powered truck circa 1900. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lohner-Porsche
Why none of them beat Tesla to production using LiIon tech is a good question for their shareholders to be asking, (or regretting).

BMW's most popular 5 series had a prototype 518ev made at the factory using the base 4 cylinder, regenerative braking, NiCds and CVT: presented in 1993. The company had the tech but they always only succeeded in selling petrol and later diesel combustion engines. Like all of auto companies, they are rushing now to head Tesla off at the pass. Whoever loses needs to be able to afford to buy Tesla Autos, which Elon needs to sell to escape this pale blue dot, before it becomes a smokey black ball.

Seriously, there is just no point buying a car that isn't electric unless you need an accelerated depreciative asset that is slower than the first gen EVs!

It isn't really the manufacturers that are so against EV, The regulators prevent them (won't allow them on the road in most jurisdictions). They actively regulate against them, e.g. ANCAP5 makes cars so heavy the barrier to entry for EV was raised by over a decade- not to mention the cost of future production. The work of bureaucrats and failed lawyers who know not the havoc they reap.

      • I have a 4 cylinder 1200cc fuel injected Kawasaki that uses about 8lt/100km .
Was around 10 lt per before opening up the breathing a bit.
Of they do do O-60 mph in 2.6 sec in stock form , but are limited by agreement to 187mph.

just be careful… i have this car and it has been giving me endless grief with oil leaks (spent over 3k so far) and the sensors.
i have looked at the bmw owners webs and they all have oil problems similar to ine..apparently it is inherent with this bmw model

    • +7

      Feature mate. Feature.

    • +4

      Failure is not an option.

      It comes standard these days.

    • +2

Not quite this car though is it? Sounds like you don't have warranty on your car if you are spending thousands of dollars of your own money, which implies your car is at least +3 years old.

  • +15

What advantages does this motor car have over, say, a train, which I could also afford?

    • Runs on petrol

    • You can drive this car but you can't drive the train (unless you are a train driver).

    • +2

      No free spa tickets here

    • +3

      Simpsons reference. Gold.

    • No BO. Well unless it’s the driver that does.

  • i had to upvote this one, fcking bargain!!!!!!

  • Got three thanks.

  • +1

I'm not sure this is the right community for a deal like this…
In all seriousness, for anyone looking to buy a car, I wouldn't suggest a 'luxury' car like this if you're looking for value. The future expenses and depreciation will make you regret your decision.

    • +1

@Stinge; Why not the right place for a deal like this, BMW are commodity products nowadays. Like iPhones, Mercs and Lexus… they just spend money making them seem advanced and attractive. Eengineering has moved on and they no longer produce a quality product that lasts like they could, and did ;-) Just better than VAG and Daimler- which says very little

  • +5

What's all this about orcs? If there are any around they will taste my axe…

    • +2

Orcs incoming! Ready the fire arrows!

  • Hi guys,
Is it alright to book in for a test drive? What to expect at a test drive?
Is the dealer going to demean you if you walk away and not buy?
Is it worth the time engaging with a car dealer?
    Tia.

    • +3

whats would be worse? Getting demeaned by a BMW dealer or a Toyota Dealer?

      • +4

Getting demeaned by Ssan Yong dealer. Then you will know it's time to take a good look at yourself.

        • At that point you can always take a long pilgrimage… to Great Wall

    • +2

No. It's fine. They will normally totally ignore you and let you browse, really depends. They're happy to spend as much time with you, the more time they spend, the more they know you want the car.

Free world, walk away as much you want.

      Don't seem needy.

You can only engage with the car dealer, just work your way through the typical sales techniques……..

    • +1

Just say you're cross shopping between this and a Ferrari. Don't feel bad walking away,if they go for a pushy sale then just bring out the good ol' partner handles the books excuse. Just prepare to be bombarded by follow up calls from the dealer.

BMWs are way overprices here. They are trying to squeeze a few sales out before Kia spoils their party.

the next gen BMW 3, codenamed the G20, is coming this year so of course, BMW want to piss off all the old models

    • +1

      Lol Kia

    • Amazing :)

  • I would rather get the new BMW X2 or Volvo xc40

SUV have better resale values now compared to sedans…
How much is the typical service at BMW?!

The best bang for buck atm is the New made innJapan Camry!

    • +1

Most BMW deals these days can squeeze in 5 years free servicing, even if you have to pay its under $1500 for 5 years.

  • -1

remember cash rewards for 1% off

  • For anyone who is buying this, get the shadow version with the M sport back, the steering wheel is better. The white leather gets quite dirty but is nice if you want it though.

  • -2

Can buy 2 Camrys with that sort of money

    • +3

You can buy 2 Hyundai Accent for Camry money.

  • If you’re actually considering it, be aware that the

    Cruise control with braking function

Is not some autonomous cruse control feature. Just that the cruise control will use the brakes when going downhill, or if speed is set well below current speed.

    • Engine braking, then brakes. Even their 20 year old auto trannies did this (and use an inclination sensor as part of the decision making over how aggressive to make the EB effect).

  • To expensive over my salary, they should be in the 50k mark, doubt many will be buying this as this is Ozbaragin unless theres a ebay 10% code or something.

    • +1

      Top post, well worth reading.

  • -2

Obviously BMWs and Mercs are the middle class cars these days.

    • +1

It has always been middle class cars

      • +3

        shizzz… I can confirm I can't afford BMW/Merc, does this make me a sewer rat? FML…

    • +2

Only people earning over $150k pa (ie Whirlpool forum members, tradespeople in management roles, professionals in executive level positions and doctors) should really be shopping in this price range.

      • If it’s on Ozbargain, now way is it for rich people!

      • Even then I'd go for a more sensibly priced car unless most of my mortgage was paid.

  • +1

FYI Close friend haggled 67k DA current year build, custom factory build (not floor/BMW AU sock) with some sport interior leather and layout personalisation including 5year servicing, no corporate pricing during $ 69,990DA promo. NSW Sylvania BMW.

  • -4

The 3 series is for wannabes and try hards. The serious players go for a 5 or 7 series machine.

    • and usually they would get the base model then de-badge for a "cleaner" look :)

  • Why is run out for a new model car taking 10 months?

    • Guessing because BMW only update the 3 series every 7 years so 10 months is only 10% of the sales cycle

      • Cost all the new ones will be hybrids. Even tho the last of the fossilsuckin production will be shipped to Oz, all the manufacturers are rushing to hybrids and EV as fast as they can sense disruption and impending doom .

  • Will the humble 3 series with M sport package be the workhorse of OzBargain and replace the Hyundai/Kia/Toyota?

  • +4

How much extra to get the blinker option installed.
Has anyone managed to get the blinkers installed for free or am I wasting my time even having them installed?

  • Providing it is a high yield investment, can I get some tax benefits if I pull the trigger on this deal?

    • +2

You'll be reaping depreciation losses in next years return!

    • Salary package it. At least then depreciation is tax deductible….

      • +2

Please don't give tax advice if you have no idea what you are talking about. The car doesn't have to be salary packaged to claim depreciation.

        • Note I did not say 'salary packaging is the only way to claim a tax deduction'. Of course there are other options to claim depreciation but they are limited for the bulk of people who are PAYG employees using a vehicle for private use. I'm not going to write an essay on the topic.

Are you disputing that salary packaging can result in depreciation being deductible? There is very easy to understand guidance on the ATO website if you do.

I built a module to compare the full after tax cost of salary packing vs not packaging as you can't necessarily trust the assumptions built into online calculators. For me it's been beneficial to salary package every time I've bought a car, new or second hand. For you it may not be. Given the point of Ozbargain is for people to save money, it's worth understanding how the process works including the pros and cons.

But note this is not tax advice as clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about…

        • +1

@knasty: You can claim depreciation if:

          You purchase the car outright;
          You get a secured loan;
          You enter a hire purchase arrangement;
          You lease the car.

Salary packaging is simply a way of purchasing the car, generally using a novated lease, with your pre-tax income. The way you finance/purchase the car, for the most part, has no bearing on whether you can claim depreciation or not. That was my point.

  • -4

    Thanks OP, bought 2!

  • -1

Is there free shipping on this deal?

    • It's a drive-away deal so delivery cost is included. Surely your local BMW dealer can drive your new BMW to you house.

      • +1

No Free Click n Collect at your local Woolies?

  • +1

Run away from BMW's after warranty runs out, bought a e92 m3 2 years ago and have spent 15k+ on repair bills in that time. One more major hiccup and it will be on carsales

    • This is a common story. It's such a shame as they are so tempting at the current prices

    • +1

That's a very pointless comment. Without knowing the full history of your car and how it has been maintained, your point is moot. It's shocking how terrible some people are in the maintenance of their cars.

      • YMMV but BMW servicing is far better than other manufacturers (in Oz), looks to be because because they hire good staff and train them to follow a properly written factory procedure. At other dealers, they do what they like because the documentation is always lacking and they don't get caught or are told to save money by marking things to be done that aren't. In the end when things fail, they get paid for warranty claims so dealer networks can get rewarded for poor service.

A well maintained BMW can be easily be more reliable than a new one as any problems are likely to be addressed already. That said (dep. on the model) they can be crammed full of bleeding edge complexities and be impossible to maintain whilst keeping your sanity, just like so many new cars from any brand that may not have such tech but have a poor implementation of previous tech. With BMW, at least the service information is specific, helpful and comprehensive so servicing is prompt, accurate and simple for the customer.

Note I am not talking SUVs as they can be worse than a Ferrari service wise (Porsche/Toureg/X5 are) and I sure as hell won't vouch for these new American designed models, or anything with plastic inside the engine… lol

    • I’ve had plenty of BMWs and never had to spend $15k in repairs. Having said that, buying any second hand performance car always has potential issues because they’ll tend to be driven harder.

  • +1

FFS even a 3 series is this expensive?

  • Got one. Thanks OP

  • +1

Dirt cheape for a beamer. What a bargain!

  • -1

This has always been RRP price at HQ in Springvale. Get your your friend who works at BMW (V3) or BMW Finance (SF5) to buy the car for you. A brand new car will be discounted by 18% and a demo car will be discounted by 28% off the above price. No need to pay all the bullshit dealer delivery charges as you're buying direct from them. I think the caveat is, you can't sell the car for one year. I'm not sure whose name should be on the rego paper but if it's your close friend or family, I wouldn't worry too much.

    • +3

Isn't the main issue being that you have to have a good friend who works at BMW? I can't say that I do. Maybe I need to start befriending Porsche dealers for when I want a 911 one day…

  • -3

Lol at all the jealous losers here that can't afford silly cars

    • +3

      The Celica is affordable

      • +2

        I miss my 2000 model celica :(

  • +2

BMW sales have taken a massive hit:
    http://www.news.com.au/technology/innovation/motoring/luxury…
probably the reason for the improved offers. The new 3 will only arrive at years end or next year so the offers driveaway price should be the start of the negotiation downwards if you are interested in buying.

    • 3 series isn't really a luxury vehicle. It's like trying to impress someone with a C Class. They'll wonder why you couldn't afford the E Class.

      • Agreed, IMO the minimum standards of luxury cars are 7 series and Mercedes S class.

    • +1

BMW sales are down cause BMW Finance now has to comply with responsible lending legislation

80%+ of their sales are on finance

  • Most BMW are so dull in their styling these days. Used to always want an M3 but even they look boring now. Would go any equivalent Merc or Audi or (profanity), even a Lexus.

    • Have you ever driven or owned a BMW?
I've driven all three of the Germans plus the Jag XE and tbh the 3 series is still the best/fun car to drive. This is coming from a guy who owns a C43 AMG and 3 series while my wife drives a A4.
BMW still make the best exteriors out of the big 3 Germans. The C Class and A4 are all super conservative/dull in design although interior wise the C Class is still king

      • Driven yes. Owned no.
Taste and style are an individual thing so all power to you if you think the 3 series has a remotely interesting looking exterior. They're all quite conservative in their styling which you do expect from ze germans but your C43 looks a lot nicer to me.
