    Thanks op just got one

which is better this or fluffy?

I got the Fluffy in last weekends Dyson deal and am really happy with it but I use it on a tiled floor. This would probably be more useful as it should also work well on carpet which the Fluffy doesn’t do very well unless the carpet has no pile.

    For $558 I’d get the v8 absolute

  • How good are these for general use?

TLDR: I wouldn't say it's a good 'general use' vacuum.

Seems quite effective with the motorised head for vacuuming floors, but suction is otherwise pretty anaemic, so performance with the other attachments is underwhelming unless keep it on the battery-draining 'max' mode.

It's noisy as hell (especially in max mode) and the battery won't last for cleaning a whole house unless it's a real rush job. The bin doesn't take long to fill and emptying it isn't a quick open and shake - it requires manual scraping to unclog it properly. The filter occasionally gets clogged and causes the motor to repeatedly shut off (rendering the appliance unusable until you wash and dry the filter or, ironically, suck the dust out with another vacuum cleaner).

But being able to just grab and go is very convenient, and I believe the later models address some of the V6's shortcomings by providing more suction, longer runtime, and a mechanism to properly clear the bin in a single action.

Thanks for that awesome review. I’ll have to look into a better vacuum cleaner.

Honestly better off with a big w Contempo $30 stick corded vacuum.

          Has about the same suction.

I would say it depends on your place. I don't think these were ever intended to be a mains vacuum replacement for an entire house - the new V10 model is.

Since I bought mine years ago, I've completely stopped using my mains powered vacuum for my 2 bedroom unit with hard floors. It can do the whole place. Max mode isn't very necessary for hard floors and normal dust.

Emptying the bin isn't the easiest thing to do. It's a bit of a hassle as you have to sometimes scrape dust off the center part, but it isn't a deal breaker for me. The V8 and V10 models improved on it with a mechanism to help scrape the center part clean.

I've never had the filter clog. I've never actually had to wash it - it just doesn't accumulate dust for me. It has never been cleaned since I bought the vac a few years ago, and it's still clean. I've always thought that was strange, but I'm not complaining!

I have had a few handstick models and a tip to get better performance for the filter is to take it outside and hit it against your hands a few times to shake off the dust in the filter. You will notice the dust exit the hole on the top of the filter.
Obviously washing it under water and letting it dry is better but if you need a quick performance boost then this does the job.

    • No good for general use. Mainly for a quick job if you don't want to pull out your corded vacuum.

The dust bin is very small. FYI, my apartment is 2 bedrooms with carpet, and I have to empty the bin 3 times if I am to vacuum the whole place.

Suction is pathetic in normal mode. I still keep my $70 cheapy vacuum because of that.

On the plus side, the motorised head is very good for picking up hair. And it's convenient without the cord.

  • Does the filter in the top fall out in this model…

    • yes

  • shame that fluffy attachment is not compatible with this, else would have made a great sucker

    • Could you please elaborate? What's the 'fluffy' attachment and why would it be useful?

  • Have had one of these near on two years (mines the “V6” before they labelled it the “V6 cord free”). Pretty sure it’s the same thing. I love it. Works great on a mix of carpeted and timber floors. Works great as a daily and picks up everything. Not sure why all the hard floor complaints are coming. Get the ball Dyson out fortnightly as it’s probably better for deeper carpet pickup. This is an wesone price. Would buy again.
