        • +14

          @MiniInTheBox:

          I like this rep.

        • Funny you should say that… Can i have a coupon to buy one for my friend's wife? She wants one now. Can i get a 32gb for 180usd or 64gb for 190usd coupon tonight?

        • @kiwijunglist: Don't think there's more code. But Shopmonk has stock - for a female Red colour is $229 AUD
          https://shopmonk.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=mi+a1

          Hope that helps.

        • @sky blu: I'm in New Zealand :) although … I do have some friends heading over to au next month… Hmmm.

        • @sky blu: that's a good price. I wonder if i can use an ebay code with that.

  • +1

Seems cheapest soo far, good work hamza

  • +1

    Legit. What now, urbancartel!!?

    • +2

      Haha! Now that's a deal!

      • +1

:) you never know how lower it could be

  • +2

Totally different spec and budget for phone, but can't wait to see some deals on the Mi 7!

  • +3

Anyone can comment on battery? Had Redmi Note 3 4000mAh, too used to a phone last 1.5 - 2days.

    • +1

Battery is great. I've been using mine for months now and 2-3 days is easy, more if you use sparingly. Currently 25hours since last charge, 69% est. 2 days left.

    • Battery's pretty good. I bought one for my wife, for $200 she was expecting some budget smartphone, but this thing is decently fast, and the build quality is great.

You also get a screen protector in the box, which is a nice bonus. Why don't more phone makers offer that?

  • +3

i think at this price the lack of nfc and band 28 would be outweighed by the price and spec, and it’s android one, so updates from android not xiaomi,

    • Updates are still from Xiaomi look it up. Only first gen Android Ones got direct from Google updates.

      • Isn't this a first gen android one?

  • +6

If only it had NFC it'd be perfect.

  • +1

Woah, didn't know it came in red. Is the colour actually available anywhere?

    http://www.mi.com/in/mi-a1/specs/

  • +1

How does it compare to the Moto G5 Plus? Yeah, I've looked at the specs, but I'd like to hear from someone who's used both…

    • +4

moto are good on updates, and this phone is Android One, so should be fine.

Moto has band 28 this phone doesn't, but it's also cheaper.

$233 for a 64GB phone with 5.5" FHD screen is hard to beat, I moved away from Xiaomi as they often lack band 28, or came with polluted ROM, Android One fixes the ROM issue.

We had so many good local deals eg Axon 7 for $300 with Australian 2 yr warranty.

You need the 64GB if you want to use 2 sims because if you use 2 sims you can't use memory card.

    • Moto has Band 28 for Optus/Telstra, NFC for Android Pay but lacks the compass sensor.
This has a compass sensor and slightly bigger screen and dual cameras but lacks NFC and B28.

      Pick one.

    Clean android?

    So stock android OS?

    No MIUI?

I hate that.. had to flash my Redmi note 4x it was so bad.

    • what?

    • +5

Yes, Android one is pure android, no MIUI except for 3 of their apps. Plus constant android os updates for 2 years is very nice.

      • Ooh, that does sound very good, thanks! This is very tempting!

Wow, a lot of hate for my comment, didn't think MIUI was that popular.

        • No idea why you're getting downvoted, but yeah this is pretty tempting, especially since this is the only Xiaomi phone that comes with stock android. Probably gonna be a bit faster when it comes to app multitasking compared to the Redmi Note 4x.

Do wish there was NFC or band 28 though, but then this phone would not be in the budget column if that was the case. I mean Nokia 7 Plus which will come mid year (probably) has NFC, band 28 and stock android and costs like $500 AUD.

        • +1

          @SDF05:

Yeah no NFC is disappointing, it's what I miss most having moved from the Moto X Pure. I paid for everything with my phone back then.

          Oh well, at this price…

Tempted to get this deal and switch from my RN4X cos I stupidly bought the 16GB one and storage is a total pain even though I have the SD card doing the heavy lifting for songs, offline youtube, podcasts, photos, etc, its still not enough space for apps, and I did try to format as internal storage and ended up corrupting the card, so don't want to go down that route again. Just need to get a bigger phone next time!

Also love that this is stock, cos I found the recovery/flashing of the RN4X tedious when all I want is stock android… Not all these fancy custom roms etc.

hmmmmm $233, so reasonable.. Weird I'm thinking so hard about it when I just had a bender weekend without batting an eyelid which set me back $700…

        • @lozza6:

Honestly i would wait a few more months if i were you. Like i said earlier, the Nokia 7 Plus should be a must buy if you love NFC, band 28, headphone jack and clean android. I think they also support treble. No unlockable bootloader yet but there is hope from internal that they will do it soon. I think their expected release is around april-may so have a look out for that one.

Seriously no need to spend on this if you want NFC. The only good thing is the stock android and NFC is becoming really important these days where you might forget to bring your purse.

        • @SDF05:

Thanks! But oops, I pulled the trigger already.

Interested in the Nokia but wondering if it will be this cheap?

Will wait and see, happy to be proven wrong!

If it's really really good then maybe mum can have my A1 ^_^

  • I have a redmi note 4 that needs replacing, would this phone be worth the upgrade do you think?

    • Why not go RN5 or RN5 Pro? Similar price and form factor is more modern

      • RN5 Pro same price from where? or are you talking about redmi 5 plus?

        • Yea my bad, I was so excited about Pro forgot to mention it's only available in India at the moment. But when it becomes available from Chinese retailers I expect it would be around $300.

      • +2

RN5 doesn't have Android One software support, not sure if it's USB C.

        • It's micro USB

      • +1

Is there anywhere you can buy a RN5 Pro at the moment? They seem to have sold out.

        • True, I think the Pro is only available in India at the moment.

    • +4

this phone is NOT an upgrade. its literally the same phone with a few extra featues for almost double the price. Never really got the hype for this model tbh. go for the RN5 pro like the other person mentioned.

      • +2

Yes you're correct. Only reason to go for this is if you hate MIUI and want a clean android os. But no difference otherwise.

        • +1

I think there are some differences that might matter to some.

Apart from the obvious Android One software with 2yrs of Google Updates, there is usb C, thinner, lighter, better cameras, 4GB

ram for all variants and should run smoother with leaner software. Although battery is smaller, has close to RN4/4x stamina.

Oh,….nearly forgot to mention it has top score ( as in the worst ) for SAR rating if that's anything you care about lol.

        • +1

Ehh, it might have a slightly better camera (dual camera is not a huge upgrade). Also battery is worse than the Redmi Note 4x.

But it will run faster than Redmi Note 4x because of the clean android os.

Also what is this SAR rating?? never heard of it until right now.

        • +1

          @SDF05:
          radiation monkaS

  • +6

Wow excellent post op, this is the cheapest I've ever seen the 64GB model.
I've got this phone and absolutely love it, it really is an excellent value phone.

    • +1

      No NFC though :((

      • Yeah that's a real bummer :'(.
I was thinking of getting an nfc ring.

        • What's that?

        • +1

          @sky blu:
A nfc ring that can be used for all kinds of stuff.
I thought I read somewhere that it could be used to make payments, but I just read that it's not possible to creat a clone of a bank card as they are encrypted, only ones that have a partnership with MasterCard and Visa can make payments :(.

        • @Wystri Warrick: Oh you mean like a physical NFC tag.

Will it work with a phone that has no NFC in the first place lol

        • @sky blu:
It can work without a phone, some uses are unlocking a phone or unlocking a door.
I don't know too much about them, but if it's possible to make payments then I may get one.

        • +1

plastic cards are good, if phone battery is dead you can still pay for stuff, if you, loose phone you can still pay for stuff, you wouldn’t want to depend on your phone as your sole method of payment.

        • @garage sale: True that. If you really want the ability to pay with your phone, you could always get one of those paywave stickers. That way you dont need to worry about whether the shop has android pay or not.

  • I've got the mi5x 64gb bit flashed with MiA1 Oreo rom :)

It's exactly the same spec! I love the phone so good! YouTube has plenty of reviews if you can't make up your mind ..

  • +2

This phone has highest SAR value. Shouldn't be recommended.

  • +5

This is a good deal too if you want microSD card. $240 with code PRINT. I ordered one came within a week. All good.

Also no fuss with the currency conversion since price is in AUD.

    • What makes this very attractive is that it includes expedited shipping, for which LIB charges US$16 extra.

I've never ordered from LIB before and got all the way to the checkout to see that they exedited shipping which is shown on the product page (not as an option but as a feature) is charged extra.

Guess I'll back out and go via your link. Thanks!

    • Much better option than LIBT.

  • Would it be a decent upgrade from the Redmi Note 3 Pro? (I keep having mms issues on it where I have to turn on airplane mode then turn it back on to receive mms)

    Thanks.

    • +4

Mate my previous was the Redmi note 2 🙄

      Definitely an upgrade !

But if your just having MMS issues maybe you should try a custom ROM?

      • +2

I've actually tried a couple (LineageOS, RR and NitrogenOS). Everything I flashed was in the right order as well Firmware > ROM > Gapps, but I kept having the same problem so I tried a couple different sms apps like Textra and Chomp still the same issue.

Eventually went back to miui thinking there miui 9 update would fix this but still the same issue.

APN's are also correct from optus' website.

        • Weird.. I never had MMS issues on either rom..

          I'm on kogan though

  • does it support aus 4G?

    • +4

Yes it's just missing B28 which is used by Optus and Telstra for 4G in certain areas.

      • yes, and especially now with the cheap optus data plans 30gb for $40, band 28 works in some areas where others don’t.

    • For Vodafone and Kogan, definitely. Not sure about Telsta and Optus guys.

What mobile provider do you have? The mi a1 doesn't have band 28.

You can compare the bands on the mi a1 spec description to this
    http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

  • +1

I have one and working well with Telstra 4G service in Western Sydney area.

    • there are several 4G bands , band 28 is just one of them, but it’s also the lowest frequency so better coverage in country areas and through thick walls.
in the city is more of a bonus than an essential.

  • +4

Does it have a notification LED?

    • +4

      yes white colour led

  • +1

Interesting comment/link over at Whirlpool regarding A1's radiation output :O

    • It's the highest but only slightly higher then phones from Oneplus, Huawei, Nokia.

    • +1

Interesting. From what I can see http://www.mi.com/en/certification/rfexposure/

      Head:1.75W/Kg Body:0.760W/Kg (Max distance 5 mm)

According to Wikipedia the US limit is 1.6W/Kg and the EU limit is 2W/Kg, so it's higher than other phones but still within the "safe" range as determined by the EU.

  • +1

No NFC for an android phone?

    • +1

a lot,of people just use the credit card you get for free from your bank, and it doesn’t need a battery to work. you can tap n go if feeling lazy or use pin if you are worried about security. also you have a few cards and pay for different things with different cards. not alll terminals are geared for nfc but they are for credit cards.

not sure how many systems have apps and on boarding for things like nfc for security doors, etc , work still just gives you and rfid tag or card.

    • If you are with CBA you can order a PayTag 😉

Mines on the back of the phone followed by a case and you don't even see it

      • +3

Still can be scanned via a RF reader in shopping center. Not as secure as using phone

        • -1

          Someones paranoid =]

The RF Tag can be switched off via the app however all I belive that does is block the card from being used until switched back on in the app..

If you wanted to be secure you'd switch it off while not using and turn back on for the moment you needed it?

        • +1

@Gomo: the sticker RF tags on are the same as credit cards and always on.

  • -1

Is Andross 8 available for this devise?

    • +1

If you meant android Oreo then yes 😀

    • +1

This comes with pure Android oreo, not the one that is stuffed with MiUI stuff. So expect it to be a bit faster than say Redmi Note 4x.

  • Whats the screen glass like on this one? Robust Gorilla glass?

  • Thanks OP, I didn't really need it, but I'm sick of my 16GB RN4X running out of space. Will wipe it and give it to dad.

64Gb will be a pleasant change, but will probably miss the 4100mah battery.

Trigger pulled, Thanks OzB, always 'saving' me money! ^_^
