@xev: Perfect! Maybe one more for bonus round.

        • @Clear:

is the fact it can be very difficult to plug in an AU plug into it, covered by the chinese plug business?

  • Do these have any form of surge suppression or overload protection?

    • The documentation states: "Nearly 20 years of professional overload protector design experience. When the load exceeds normal, timely cut off power supply, effectively avoid the danger of fire".

It also says it is "fully in line with the [Chinese] national standards".

Additionally, "Children always do not know what is dangerous, sometimes they may insert finger or metal in electrical sockets. Single span 75N is required to open the door".

It's not just safety they considered. Design too. The power strips have "Hidden LED indicator. Peaceful white without any disturbances, even the lights, we also elaborate set-up and brightness. Unlike the old red light that grabs in eyes". "The Creation Work of Art. Make a Better Life".

Wow. Yet with all that thinking, they forgot to put mounting holes on the back, so you will never be able to fix the thing to a wall.

Amazing. I guess after 20 years experience they deliberately left out the features that cost nothing to put in and all the competition include (or did someone just forget to copy the rear?)

        Here's a cracker:
'Children always do not know what is dangerous'

That's something between a double entendre and a double negative. I guess no matter what, it 'will result in a positive user experience', IOW: an electric shock

Luckily, approved powerboards in the local $2 shop are like $9AUD

    • Why 15A plug?

    • +1

? why is that, unless your an electrican then you shouldnt be doing make shift powercords

      • Technically and legally you can do what ever you like on this side of the power socket, so no you don't need an electrician.

This doesn't mean everyone should just start smashing together anything and everything, use common sense and be cautious. If you're not confident and don't know what you're doing then get someone else who is to do it. But needing an electrician, naa.

(Edit: speaking of SA, not sure of other states - so YMMV)

        • I think you need to check that again

        • @asa79: Just had a look and I can't find anything at all that says you can not work on your own electrical appliances, make your own cables, etc.

This would be absolutely ridiculously restrictive for any innovation. Think of any electrical hobbyist, etc - this very often involves wiring your own devices including plugs, mains to other AC voltage transformers, winding your own transformers, etc.

I've never heard of any restrictions for what you can do to stuff that you then plug into a socket (with respect to laws pertaining around electrical licence requirements).

Stuff that's on the "other" side of that socket is "restricted territory" though.

Happy to stand corrected if you can find any official words that contradict me.

        • @iDroid: This is QLD so would expect would be similar between states https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/injury-prevention-safety/ele…

Under section 18 of the Electrical Safety Act 2002 (the Act), electrical work includes "the manufacturing, constructing, installing, testing, maintaining, repairing, altering, removing, or replacing of electrical equipment".

This covers tasks such as installing a new power point, replacing a light switch, replacing a batten holder with a new light fitting, repairing an appliance such as a heater, altering the location of an existing power point, replacing a light fitting with a ceiling fan, or constructing an extension lead and replacing a plug on the end of a lead.

It is not against the law to purchase electrical accessories or appliances that need to be hard wired, but they must be connected by a licensed electrical contractor.

Other work such as replacing a drive belt in a washing machine, cutting openings for air-conditioning units or fitting, but not connecting, an electric wall oven in a kitchen cabinet are not regarded as electrical work under the legislation. However, electrical risks such as damage to, or contact with, wiring contained within wall cavities need to be considered and appropriately controlled particularly when cutting holes or driving screws or nails into walls.

    • In QLD it is illegal to rewire if not qualified 8-)

  • Moar power!

Is this one spaced out wide enough to use those fat brick plugs in each socket?

  • hmmm so i can use us plugs in this with no need for an adapter?

    • +1

      Correct

      • Even if your device is 110-120V only and you stick it to a 220-250V supply? That's usually smoke signals.

        • Doesn't work that way unfortunately.

      • +2

thanks for confirmation, to my slightly obvious question. i just never knew these existed. anyway i ended up getting the 6 plug version from joybuy, $16.98aud free shipping. https://www.joybuy.com/product/MI-Power-Strip-Patch-Board-wi…

        • How did you get that price? Showing $21aud for me.

        • @EBC: hmmm, it seems to be changing it now says $18.59aud.

I have a mild amount of interest in this product, except for the fact:
    * it covers the Powerpoint Switch.
    * I can pick it up cheaper in other stores.
    * USB Ports are not QC
    * Not AU approved
    * Plug is upside down
    * Voids home insurance
    * Plug is Chinese not Australian
    * Where is the UK plug?
    * This product is illegal to import.

So with all that to consider, I'll only be ordering 7 units this evening.

OMG you win! Come over to my place to collect your free Scratch and Sniff sticker! Sorry Cola is all gone :(

It is legal to import but illegal to sell once you have it in Australia

      Where is the UK plug?

      It's found in the UK

      Voids home insurance

So you can cancel your insurance and save like a true ozbargainer

The 6 sockets smart version is also on sale for AUD $20.21.

    https://m.lightinthebox.com/en/original-xiaomi-smart-power-s…

    • That seems like a better deal as I usually require more than 3 ports. But I can't see the USB ports on that version

      • no earths on the additional 3 and no USB charging

      • here's the 6 sockets with 3 usb ports version for $24.34

        • That doesn't seem to be a smart one

  • +1

Quality is great but price is too cheap, rubbish!!! only ordered 5 this time.

    • Too cheap?

I'll sell them to you for $24.61 each

  • this is a really good thing to buy trust me

For those skeptics, worried about burning down your house…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KrlgdcSdNU

    • But what if the power strip in the video is a FAKE and the fake doesn't burn. It's important I get to the bottom of this because I tend to always want to light my cigarettes as they lay balanced on top of my Xiaomi Mi Power Strip.

  • +1

I find this kind of (sort of) universal power-boards very useful for all those devices with power packs requiring the very unhealthy (black) adaptors.

  • +4

I would trust Xiaomi any day over HPM and all that other junk we buy over here.

    • Those $3 Arlec boards that throw huge sparks every time I plug something into them?

  • Thanks, bought 2

  • Going to Japan soon with a friend is this good to use there? Can anyone recommend adaptors to buy?

    • Yes definitely! All you need is a Japanese adaptor to connect to the powerboard and then you can plug all your AU cables into this, it's so damn handy!

  • Insulated plug versions of these are only a few more dollars delivered on eBay.

    • Link?

        • +1

I honestly expecting you to post a normal powerboard, but that's impressive. I'm tempted to get one and tear it down to see how similar it is to the Xiaomi.

        • @Clear:

I wouldn't mind betting they're exactly the same. I bought a few just last night, so we'll see how it goes. Everything about it looks the same except for the proper ADR plug.

        • +1

@Bamboozle: There's no earth pin on that plug? Seems odd for a power board. I'd be interested in seeing inside them if you pop one open.

  • Is there a code for free shipping? When I add to cart it's AUD $14 but then it's adding a shipping charge of approx. $7 min. Am I missing something?

    • EDIT: Looks like free shipping option is back on now

  • Anyone have one delivered yet?

I got a tracking number several weeks ago which doesn't come up as recognized on any tracking site. Their response is that I have to wait to 28th May before they will do anything.

    Won't be using them again.

    • Update: after threatening to do a credit card chargeback they now provided a different non-fake tracking number which shows the items have only just been sent out and not 12 days ago as they claimed.

      Very dodgy practice.
