I have several Logitech M570's I use at work and home. Is this new model worth an upgrade ?
After some feedback from anyone who have moved from the M570 to the Ergo Trackball

    • Whats the trackball good for? I work in CAD so genuinely interested.

      • +6

Preventing / fixing Repetitive Strain Injury.
My wrist started seriously hurting from using a mouse all day. I bought a Logitech M570, and no longer have issues.
It takes weeks to reach the same efficiency with a trackball as you had with a mouse, but after that it is very comfortable.

        • Ok Thanks,
I haven't really had any sort of RSI yet after 12 years of drawing, my mouse is pretty quick so not much wrist movement.

Maybe I'll consider if it ever happens.

        • @ph88: I used a small mouse for too long. Started having issues after 14 years.

        • @Make it so: ah, I'm currently using Razer Mamba series for the wider and bumpier scroll wheel.

I have two, the negative is the rubber thumb-grips come loose after a year.

        • I got a M570 years ago (from Ozbargain) for this reason, am loving it and am absolutely used to it

I am young and didn't have any pain at all when I started using it, but I:

          • Found the look of the M570 sorta "cool" (and saw a colleague using it - thought it was cool that it was unique)
          • Liked the concept of not having to physically move the mouse
          • Wanted to "invest long term" in my hands and prevent strain/injury from occurring

However, what someone asked me once (which I find to be a valid and funny question) is, "couldn't you then develop a similar strain/injury in your thumb instead then?"

And I had no answer… lol. Any ideas?

          @illumination:

I think the point is that your thumb/fingers are more dexterous, and less susceptible to repetitive stress than your wrist. You can still get RSI in your thumb, but it's probably less likely.

The best option is probably to switch regularly between the two. There is a woman at my work who not only switches between a regular mouse and a vertical mouse, but also switches from left hand to right hand!

Currently using it for my work, and I do occasionally game on this mouse, not FPS game but games like world of warcraft no problems. And yes takes a while to get use to it but after using M570 previously, transitioning to this MX ergo, no problems at all.

I've not used the new one, but used up two M570s (at work and home). Both always suffered in my book from the same flaw. The ball and ball mount pins. They never were that good and degraded over time so was never very smooth. I moved to the Elecom M-XT3DRBK, the first in 2015, and the next in 2017. The ball and mounts in my book are superior and I prefer these so much better. They are artificial ruby bearing/pins. I wouldn't go back to the Logitech.

On the plus side, the new Logitech one is USB rechargeable, not a battery.

I need to clean the logitech one every two weeks or so, but no wear issues so far (over a year). The battery lasts absolutely forever, so not too fussed about rechargeable or not.

The model you mentioned looks good…

        • I'd definitely recommend the Elecom. I paid a lot more than that Amazon price for the first one in 2015 (had to get from Japan), but when I needed another was really happy to get it at that price from Amazon.

I have multiple m570's and I clean them maybe once a month at most. Easy, just pop the ball out, flick at any dirt with a finger nail and pop the ball back in. Maybe a 30 second job at most. Otherwise no wear or accuracy issues after maybe 5 years of everyday use.

        • Maybe I got bad ones. One especially the ball would grind and was not smooth moving after a few years, and the other did degrade but nowhere near as bad. Yes cleaning easy.

      • The Elecom does indeed look pretty good.

How else would you compare it to the M570? For example…

        • Battery life?
        • Size/weight?
        • Cleaning the ball?
        • Functionality? e.g. does it have sideways scroll like the Ergo?
        • Can it angle like the Ergo?
        • What's the little button/switch looking thing in the middle of the mouse?
        • Does it have a place to store the USB receiver?
        • Is there a new version of this, or is this the newest?
        • +1

About the same life I think (although I just recharge my eneloop every couple of months and never run it out) and size. It has tilt left/right on the scroll wheel, but I've never used it. Cleaning exactly the same as the logitech

It doesn't angle. The button is to change resolution. Yes on the receiver - on the bottom. No idea if newer model. Not in 2017 there wasn't when I got the second

I used the M570 as my main mouse for a couple of years, and moved to the Ergo about 4 months ago.

The Ergo is bigger. I have large hands and the M570, while comfortable, was always a little smaller than I liked. It's also got a nicer texture than the M570. Not that the M570 had a bad texture but the ergo seems nicer. I use mine at the same angle as the M570, so the adjustable angle for me is unnecessary. Also note that the angle change is one or the other, it's not continuous. So you can have it flat or at 20 degrees (or whatever it is) but nothing in between. The two programmable buttons are also in a better place, in my opinion.

Where it falls down is Logitech Options. That software is absolute junk. Moving the mouse around with the trackball is fine, but the random lag with scrolling can be insanely frustrating. It's made me think about going back to the 570 multiple times, but ultimately I've liked the feel of the Ergo, so I've stayed with it. Hopefully they will fix it in an update. Also I used to be able to pop the track ball out with my pinky to clean it, but the hole for that is now too small, and you need a pencil or similar to do so.

      • Is that because you are using bluetooth instead of unifying?

        • No, I'm using unifying like I did with the 570. If you don't install Logitech Options, it will work flawlessly, but you don't get the ability to remap buttons, which is crucial to how I use the mouse.

I use both the M570 and the Ergo, for work, rest and play (FPS). I got both via ozb, the M570 a long time ago from amazon and the Ergo recently when JB had it for about $100.

Ergo is much heavier compared to the M570 so the M570 is my traveller and the Ergo stays at home.

Logitech royally messed up the ball removal on the Ergo. I have to clean my rollers multiple times a day because I'm a greasy wog living and working in dusty environments and it's a hassle to remove the ball from the Ergo. If you use something sharp like your keys or a pen it'll eventually chip and degrade the trackball, so I have to carry a pencil with an eraser tip to pop it out. The M570 ball comes out with your little finger up the bottom hole, but no they had to mess it up.

If anyone can invent a 3d-printable thing which can live in the Ergo hole which would make it easy to pop the ball out, that'd be mint. If I had the time and a 3d printer I'd have a go.

I use my M570 flat and the Ergo on the raised angle, both feel good for me. The Ergo on the lowered angle feels wrong, I can't find a good place to put my little fingers.

Initially I was cut about losing the AA battery but I don't mind it now.

It's great to have left/right scrolling on the Ergo, I don't use it much but it's a little more convenient than mapping a spare M570 button to scroll with the trackball.

The mouse speed toggle button on the Ergo next to the ball is great when I'm doing pixel-perfect drawing.

There's nowhere to store the receiver on the Ergo which is an oversight IMO.

If I was going to buy another trackball I'd prefer the M570 over the Ergo because I'm a tightarse at heart. Can never find another cheap one on amazon though.

      • Raised angle is heaps better on the Ergo.

I think given the Ergo supports both BT and Unifying, maybe the intention is you leave the receiver on your home PC and use BT on your portable?

        • I'll give that a shot, thanks.

  • I'd recommend a Clearly Superior Technology L-trac

    https://www.amazon.com/CST2545-5W-GL-Ambidextrous-Performanc…

You can add an S-button (which is actually 2 buttons in 1 order) with a 20% discount which surprisingly work quite well out of the box provided you can put up with loops of cables.

They could be modded I guess.

    • ahh cables… get them away

    • +2

I was going to ask what made them clearly superior, then realised that was the company name. Are they though?

      • Not compared to the elecom or logitech, unless you specifically want a trackball you can't use thumb on the ball plus access the buttons. The thumb trackballs mean you can keep your fingers on the mouse buttons like normal, thumb on the ball. That one though, explain how you could even try… :)

  • I really enjoy my ergo. Use it at work and it’s nice since you don’t move the wrist. Logitech options is a bit frustrating as it always seems to want to update causing issues on our locked down PCs.

  • I have ordered as it is a good price. I was using an evolution vertical mouse, and whilst it helped with my mild carpal tunnel, I never loved it. I hope that this will be an improvement in the office environment.
