Superb price. I'll look out for these.

    but they're not eneloops!! =P

Compared to $10 30pack in Bunnings it is good price. Thanks grabbed two.

    • But those $10 30 Pack at Bunnings is Varta brand and Made in Germany. Much better batteries. Actually i picked one up yesterday from Bunnings. These SCA batteries would no doubt be rebadged generic batteries that are made in China to a lesser quality standard. Hard to compare these cheap stuff SCA batteries to Varta Made in Germany. Personally for quality wise and perhaps better lasting batteries i would go for the Varta batteries.

A pair of Varta batteries last for a week or more for my Xbox One controller. I doubt these SCA batteries would even reach half that long and it might even end up leaking too.

      • +1

I actually put the Varta ones into my xbox one wireless controller and use it every day. There is no harm to try a few with SCA given the half price.

I considered these once but couldn't find reliable reviews of these, plus the heavy duty tag isn't great even though they are labelled Alkaline. Ended up getting the Bunnings Vartas yesterday too, sadly not on special price :(

I wouldn't be as quick to judge the SCAs though. I mean Duracells are a "known brand" got alkalines but as below I've had a few leak over the years, compared to none for Energizer.

        • +2

          You mean 'Duraleaks.'

      • +1

If you run down and replace a pair of AAs within a week then no brand is gonna leak.

        • +1

Each to their own but wouldn't rechargeable batteries be better for this sort of use? I use rechargeables everywhere except for clocks and remote controls.

        • +2

Not every one uses bulk packs like within a month. I've had Dick Smith batteries leak all inside of the unopened package that was well within the use by date. Waste of money that was. Cheap generic batteries can mean bad quality.

  • What's the quality like though? - compared to Energiser or Duracell

    • Don't buy Duracell. Duracell batteries leaking.

    this commbo is $5 everyday price 12AA + 12AAA :)

    • Enthusiastic commbo

  • +1

Do they leak? This is always the risk with buying cheap batteries.

    • That's why i buy better quality batteries like the Varta Made in Germany from Bunnings. I'm not into buying noname Made in China batteries as the quality just won't be there. The only name on these batteries are SCA but it would be only a rebadged generic as obviously SCA don't manufacture AA Alkaline batteries.

      • +6

        You really like Varta batteries.

        • Yes it's not too bad.

      • +4

Agree. Varta seem to make the most reliable disposable batteries these day. I use to think Duracell but something happened to the quality and I experienced them leaking a few times.
Leaking batteries can easily ruin equipment so sometimes cheap can turn out very expensive.
Not leaking is numero uno with alkalines

        • Precisely. My previous false economies with batteries have been:

          • Buying more than I will use, so by the time I use them, they have lost some charge and spend the next 1-2 years in something and eventually leak. Fresh batteries don't leak, even better, well made fresh batteries!

          • Using the various types of battery in the wrong equipment, e.g. things that are voltage sensitive prefer alkalines- things that are seldom used/use low amounts of power need low discharge NiMH batteries… etc.

          • And making a habit of removing batteries form devices that are not used/put in a drawer.

If a battery does leak, wipe the internals of the device with a damp paper to remove the acid (several times), especially the contacts and/or spring. Make sure all are dry and use contact restorer on any rusty parts- sooner rather than later.

@resisting the urge: Alkaline batteries leaking acid? Uh…

        • +2

          @Munki: OK, sorry

Potassium Hydroxide, a substance which caustically oxidises metals. Not acid.

        • Hmm Duracell were always my preferred battery - seemed to Outlast and corrode less than Energizer. Admittedly I've not used them much for a couple years, curious to see if the quality has dropped

        • +1

@Salmando: Just take it from us, unless you want to clean up the mess after using Duraleaks.

        • @McFly: Duracells are only a little better than other Alkalines. If they've been on the shelf a long time, they'll be no good. In Australia, Duracell volumes are low and availability is high, so the time on the shelf is probably longer than with a brand like Energizer.

In europe, its the other way around entirely.

  • cool! pollute more for less!

    • +1

Except I recycle all of my batteries. Aldi Battery Recycle Bin is always full of batteries for people who are mindful.

      • I wonder if I can pick up prematurely discarded Li-ions from them then :P
        🤔

      • +1

if you are recycling, that doesn't mean you aren't polluting.
there's an energy cost to get materials, ship materials, produce batteries, recycle batteries etc.

  • +8

I got a heap of these last time around could not recommend them they do not seem to last very long at all.

    • No name and white label batteries like these are always from low end producers- forget Foxconn and friends in Shen Zhen, these battery factories are the pits of the earth, they make Filipino rubbish tips look clean (and employ more children)

  • For this price might be good ammo for a slingshot
Anyone tested these as a projectile weapon?

  • +1 for Varta instead of SCA crap.

  • Used to use massive packs of cheap batteries in my Gameboy as a kid. Would get like 2 hours out of 2 AA, where maybe 12-14 from Duracell, and 10 from Energizer.

    40 for like $2 around year 2000.

Wish someone had told me the difference between "super heavy duty" and alkaline batteries when I was a kid.

      • Always got mine through the Tandy free battery every month membership card (I think I had a couple of cards).

      • I wish I just got 4x rechargeables, would have been a blessing to charge some while using the others.

  • So what's the best AAA batteries to use in low usage devices?

Gonna put some in some torches and smaller items like luggage weighing device and some headphones for the noise cancellation feature.

    • Well Varta (made in germany, available from Bunnings) aer the best alkalines I know of at the moment.
German quality and most importantly, I haven't seen one leak yet.
Those or Eneloops are all I use

      • Any recent deals for Varta?

        • No but they are always cheap at Bunnings. Totally worth it as leaking batteries are common these days and will quickly ruin any equipment
