Good if you want coloured light display (I did) as does not have white leds. Complaint about this in last deal

Received same looking set including power supply @au$8.62 from sister store (?) Gearbest. Light strip did not work in section at inside end of roll - damaged wiring. Power supply failed within 1day. All replaced by GB, but a long wait from initial order.

Installed in elderly relatives room at aged care facility (on top of curtain rail - timer activated). Gives a coloured glow to ceiling without seeing leds. Change light colours / patterns weekly when I visit. Brightens up his room. Staff love it.

However remote uses same codes as his LG TV, so lights kept changing. Covered receiver (on end of wire hanging out of white controller) with black electrical tape. Now need to put remote up to receiver to change colours, but at least doesn't turn off when changing channels.

May be different, may be similar issues with this set.

A possible fix would be to get one of these, which would make it app-controlled over wifi.

Might not be very helpful in your application, maybe it'll help someone else though!

      • +1

Didn't know about that device, thanks eug.

It's a RGBW controller. Not sure if 4 pin RGB connector for this light set will fit 5 pin RGBW socket? (Should work)

But electrical tape is $14 cheaper ;-)
Wouldn't be much benefit in my low use situation, but may be useful for others as you say.

Now have 2 working RBG sets for price of 1 (added old power supply, cut & rewired last section of strip)😀

      • I've bought plenty of these LED strips before off eBay. One thing to notice is the 3528 LEDs are much smaller (and I think some are 1 colour each LED), whereas the 5050 LEDs are usually all 3 colours R/G/B in each LED and are brighter.

After plenty of experimenting, I now usually go for

        • 5050 SMD
        • 60 LED/m (300 LED per 5m) - some cheaper ones come with 30 LED/m so you only get half as much / half as bright, but also draws less max power
        • Waterproof/IP65/66/67 (means it's covered in this rubber/plastic)
        • 44key controller (much better than the 24 key controllers, can save preset colours, i.e. tune the 'white' you want to save)
        • Mini controller (slimline unit instead of little chunky box)
        • Power supply (5 or 6A, AU plug)

Can usually get the above for $20-25 off eBay for a full 5 meter set.

For the controller, I bought one of these 'Music Controllers' last week to try and am waiting for it to arrive.

        • Thanks for the info.
Do you have a link to something like what you're suggesting?

    • My mate had the same problem with his Samsung TV lol. Changed the controller to a wifi one and it solved the problem. Bonus is it works with his GH mini now!

    Thanks for the post, Hamza

There is a limit of 2 per account

    • Only 1 off for the $4.99 price when I just purchased now, was $14 for 2 off..

      • +1

If I am reading that right, you have to purchase them separately.

        • +1

Cool, I’ll give it a shot now as I wanted 2… will update shortly…

          ****UPDATE**** @Xev is 100% correct, must do 2x seperate orders… Works 2x only… ;)

@Bunsen: Most of these sites are like that, can be frustrating, but more presents to your self in the mail!

@xev: The Ozbargain way mate, we all luv our pressies, even if we did have to pay for them ourselves, lol..

Cheers for the heads up btw, i never thought of doing separate transactions, just assumed u could order 2x in the single order, think i did with Zapals or LITB, but maybe not??

        • +1

@Bunsen: Yeah, they are all a single code for a single item per purchase.

If you bought two of these in separate purchases your will get a ticket/message from them asking if it was intentional, so check for that.

@xev: Cheers mate, will do.. :)

  • Just FYI - usually the power adaptor is buzzing/whining with these products. It is quite annoying when you want to go bed.
The only way how to solve this is either switch off the outlet or have a smart outlet that you can turn on/off from your phone.

    Reason:

    • +2

I wouldn't trust it anyway… $2.60 for an AC adaptor is nothing, and those things can be a pretty bad safety hazard when made that cheaply.

      • 1000% true..

  • What do people mainly do with these?

    • ambient lighting, i.e. kitchen bench, bathroom mirror etc.

If you have it around your island bench it should look awesome.

thou no white light is a bummer.

    • r/battlestations

  • Does this work well in a PC Case? Will it remember the colours when powered down?

  • Where would you get power adapters from for this? What standard does it take?

  • Can this run off a battery pack? If so where can I get one that's compatible?

    • +2

Any 12v cell will work, divide the capacity of the battery amps by 2 & it will last that many hours… eg. a standard car size 12v is say 100amps, so divide by 2 = 50hrs continuous use…

Yes, you will need a decent size battery to get any worthwhile duration out of it… Eneloops r the go, j/k…

      • It's probably worth mentioning that car batteries do not like being discharged till flat like that. You'd want a deep-cycle battery for that purpose, and even then they shouldn't be discharged below 20% of their capacity. An SLA battery would be preferable, but cost more at higher capacities.

Also, in case anyone goes looking, car batteries typically won't list an AH rating, they instead have RC and CCA. RC (reserve capacity) is the number of minutes a fully charged battery will discharge 25 amps till the voltage drops below 10.5V. An LED strip will still put out light at 10.5V, but the overall color will change as the individual LEDs will change in brightness relative to each other.

CCA is cold cranking amps, i.e. how many amps the battery can put out for 30 seconds till it drops below 7.2V. Not relevant to this use case.

        • +1

Technically 100%.. I was talking layman's terms, as obviously that will go way over the heads of ppl that can't read the specs like we do.. No offence 2 any1 btw… ;)

  • +3

Specs say 12v DC @2amps if you run the complete 5m, so around 0.5amps/m (or 500mA)… Personally, i would go say 12v 2.5—>3amps so it's not running flatout 100% (using the full 5m length)…

Check any AC Adaptors you have lying around the house, old laptop chargers, printer adaptors etc, u may be surprised & have a 12v DC lurking about. Just check the output amps 2 make sure it can handle the amount of strip light u will be powering…

    :)
