that's probably the cheapest i have ever seen a 2TB

    • +2

Darn tootin', especially at a national B&M store! :)

    • +1

Can someone please open up a drive they bought and let us know what the model of the Samsung HD is in it? Thanks!

  • +1

Wow, Hardley Normals prices cheaper than everyone elses?! Someone pinch me and tell me I'm hallucinating. If I didn't just buy 2 externals from the Centrecom sale, I would pay a visit to one of Mr Gerry Harvey's stores.

  • I too bought the 1tb for $58 from mln (delivered) but am going to cancel my order in favour of this deal.

    • lol wasted time

    • do you know how to cancel the order with MLN?

      • By not paying haha. Actually i don't know either..

        • I've already paid, that's the problem lol

  • Bought 2 x 2TB Externals from HN About an hour ago, $99 each hell yeah. :)

  • 2 x 1tb is worth more than 1 x 2tb, but yea still a good deal ;p

    • +7

I'd say the opposite is true for some people.

      • +4

In terms of cost due to data loss, 2x1TB is better
in terms of electricity cost 1x2Tb is better.

Anyway, price isn't surprising, starting from CES, all USB2.0 drives will soon be in bargain bins or given away with bundles.
Prediction for HN promotion: buy a washing machine, get a choice - free pack of grey-imported washing powder or USB2.0/USB1.1/USB1.0 external drive, whilst end-of-line stocks last).

Put in another way: size of disks will increase and/or $/GB will decrease. So, rushing out to buy outdated (ie.USB2.0 vs USB3.0) drives isn't a bargain if you can wait.

        • +3

Well they aren't at a throwaway commodity price yet and it will be many years before the technology becomes outdated. This deal couldn't have come at a better time as I'm running out of storage space!

        • +1

Not that outdated? Most people don't have USB 3.0 devices? If people are buying these for media players/streamers they're using USB 2.x

        • Not that outdated? Most people don’t have USB 3.0 devices?

By that logic, Samsung don't need to have an identical model with USB3.0 in the market right now, replacing this one.

If people are buying these for media players/streamers they’re using USB 2.x

I suspect for most people an external drive is a multi-purpose buy proposition.

        • I dont have a USB3 motherboard and have no intentions of getting one anytime soon as I really couldn't care less about it. Besides USB3 isn't going to really takeoff until Intel include it in their chipsets which won't happen until 2012 I last heard.

        • If you were actually in the market for a motherboard right now, you'll notice that most of them come with USB 3.0 already.

Laptops like the Dell XPS 15, HP Envy, ProBooks, and EliteBooks, Fujitsu LifeBook SH760, Toshiba Portege R700 (with the port replicator), a bunch of Asus laptops and the Asus eeePC 1018p, thinkpad w701, also have USB3.0 support.

…not to mention desktops like the Dell Precision, Lenovo ThinkCentres, etc etc.

It's more common than you think. :)

        • They are all tacked on by the manufacturers to the PCI-E lanes though (and quite poorly in some cases causing them to slow down PCI-E video card slots). They aren't natively built into the Intel chipset on the motherboard.

        • yes the NEC chipset is the most common, but people really don't care if it's built into the chipset or provided by an external chipset as long as it works, which it does. They wouldn't be playing high-bandwidth 3D games while copying large amounts of data or doing a system backup anyway, so any slight pci-e slowdown (~80MB/s out of 4-16GB/s) really wouldn't matter.

Certainly not everyone needs USB3.0 (e.g. people using them as extra storage for a media center computer, people who copy medium-sized files incrementally rather than a lot of data at once like a full system backup etc), but USB 3.0 definitely has a place right now. You may not have or want it, but lots of others do. :)

  • Nice deal

  • can these drives be taken out of the casing and used internally?
and does anyone know if the drive is 7200 or 5400rpm?

      • +1

gee thanks for the info real helpful
And FYI the cheap Seagate and WD 2TB drives are 5900 and 5400 rpm respectively hence why I asked about the Samsung one. Also WD have a range called Caviar Green which are all 5400rpm and come in 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 3TB last time I checked.

Also would've done a google search if I knew the model of this drive, all I have is brand and IIRC Samsung have 2 or 3 different types of 3.5" external drives.

      • +3

which planet have you been living on? most external 3.5s are 5400rpm, e.g. WD Caviar Greens or similar

      • +1

That's just ridiculous statement buddy. Goto MSY and see if they have more 5400rpm or 7200rpm drives in stock.

    • Mentions low power consumption on the box so I'm pretty sure it'll have the 5400rpm drives, also these were $94 at the HN in Bundall

    • From what I know Samsung don't make a 2TB 7200RPM drive. This will be either a F3 or F4 Ecogreen 5400RPM drive.

  • Hmmm… Possible to price match less 5% with OfficeWorks?

    OW item SGED2000 ?

    • +1

Different item? This is samsung, link is a seagate.

  • wait till you get to the store. HN known to have limited stock on great deals…

    • But sometimes they give a substitue at same price

  • +1

Damn I just bought their WD 1TB drive for $74. Didn't even see samsung 2TB. Rats.

    • +5

you certainly live up to your alias!

  • Does this have a virtual ROM or pre-installed software? If it does, can it be removed?

  • Could't resist just went down the road to get one, I think I have enough HDD's now to last me a few years lol

    • +4

nonsense. TPG giving unlimited adsl 2+ will fill up your TeeBees within months.

      • I have enough trouble to try download 120GB a month on Optus Cable so now having all these HDD's will be enough for a while :)

        • +10

oh man, I wouldn't normally do this, but just for you, I'll make the effort to help you with using up your quota.. just let me know you your address and wifi password..

i repeat this is a one off, so please people of sydney dont innundate me with addresses and wifi passwords - I cant help you all use up your precious bandwith..

          lol..

  • Strange I was in Harvey Norman today and didn't see these @ $99. I certainly would have been tempted to get one at that price.

Quite and ugly looking enclosure though.

    • The price wasn't shown at the moore park store either but went to register and they were $99

  • USB 3.0?

    • 2.0

    • why do you worry about usb 3.0? the mechanical hard drives will be the bottleneck and you waste money paying premium for usb 3.0. It is more suited for the SSD drives and eSata is the best solution for the mechanical ones.

On USB 2.0 speed tests vs sata 2, the ranking goes like this: 3.5 > 2.5 > usb memory stick, so the external powered ones do perform very well and you won't notice much difference between copying internal to internal and internal to external (if you have moved on to all sata 3 internal drives, aim for converting one sata3 port to eSata for external drive)

      • Of course people worry about USB 3.0. It's insane almost illegal to transfer 2TB via the pathetically slow USB 2.

      • +3

Are you confusing USB 3.0, SATA 3.0, and eSATA?

A USB 3.0 ext hard drive is significantly faster than a USB 2.0 ext hard drive. The internal drive itself is not the bottleneck. You cannot see speeds over 35-40ish MB/s on a USB 2.0 ext drive, whereas 80+MB/s is normal with USB 3.0 hard drives.

It makes a huge difference when copying large amounts of data (2TB is a lot), or when backing up your computer or files.

  • Great price, not too fond of its looks though :( Looks very retro

    • Bought it, there was only 3 left at the Cannington store with 5min before closing time! Item was actually advertised so maybe that's why :P

  • +1

Wow gerry harvey must be taking a pay cut!

    • +5

No, it's just that we are now paying the correct price. Previously we were being ripped.

  • Bought 2 in HN Chadstone 2 hours ago, still lots left, not even price tag for this in HN store, but large advertisement for the 1TB drive.

    • noticed this as well, no ad/signs for this or the 2.5 1tb, or the LG USB DVD burner, are they trying to sell these or what?

      • I think they are trying to sell the expensive ones first, these are going to be sold fast even without ad

        • You are probably right, but the thing is that I went into the store not knowing about the deals. Walked around and saw all the over priced products, picked up a catalogue on the way out and realised there were actually stuff worth buying. However, by the time I gone through the catalogue, I was outside Officeworks.

        • lol should've poped into OW and see if there was anything u wanted to price match :P

        • I did:) but they don't stock Samsung drives and didnt really need one.

  • Mln have these for $109 now

  • Yeah got one as well. Funny most of the other special boxing day prices they do all the time.
I saw tv's on special more then sale prices a few weeks ago

  • This is the model if anyone is wondering:
    http://www.samsung.com/ae/consumer/computers-peripherals/har…

  • Anybody know if HN in Broady still have any of these?

    • Never mind, they had plenty so I bought two.

  • Is this the model that comes with e-sata port? Or only USB 2.0?

    • It has a mini-usb port at the back of it, the instructions that came with it mentioned an eSATA cable, maybe it can plug into mini-usb? Not really sure.

The HN @ Cleveland which is what I went to, had at least 40 of them. So plenty of stock of this one.

      • only the 'plus' version comes with esata support.

  • +4

To all the people complaining about the enclosure of the HDD. I just recently bought one of these. At first I wasn't very fond of the enclosure as it looked a bit outdated but when I actually got it. It's better than the fingerprint magnets you get from the commonly seen WD or Seagate ones.

The top case is made of a aluminium casing which does not attract any fingerprints, the body itself has a nice matte feel to it. And it is well designed, there are vents on the bottom for better air ventilation and also there is an LED at the bottom which glows green for 2.0 or blue for 3.0 and the knob at the front adjusts the intensity of the LED.

    • +1

thanks mate, was wondering what that knob was for in the pictures.

  • Just a note for people, mine came with a white LED. I've read on the Samsung website that USB 2.0 can come with white or green LED's.

  • does anyone know if opening the thing voids the warranty?

i imagine it comes with the older f3eg hdd. the new f4eg hdds supposedly have better power management. so for me it comes to a decision between a new f4 hdd for a couple of $ less or an f3 (which i'd rip out and stick in my computer) + external enclosure which might come in useful occasionally.

    • +3

Opening the top of the case does not void the warranty, there are 2 stickers that void the warranty if you attempt to further open case to remove the hard drive.

Inside my case was a HD204UI which is the F4 version sold at PCCG for $115 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

      • thanks, i was just looking at the user guide and it says disassembling will void the warranty. i think i will stick to the internal hdds, i don't think i could live with usb speeds.

      • +1

What screw driver tool did you use to open up the case? T8 type?

        • T8 yes

      • I opened one of mine, it was a HD203UI

  • Does anyone know what time Harvey Normal Open tomorrow (27/12/10) at Liverpool?

  • Anyone know if the Chadstone store still has stock of this and the 1tb 2.5"?

    • They had a whole stack of the 2TB left (on the floor, probably a good 20-30 units) when I was there at about 4:30pm.

  • Thanks for this fellas! Will have to go in and grab one!

  • cheers, bought 2 @ nunawading, had stacks left in the arvo yesterday

  • Chatswood HN in Sydney had a good dozen or so. They weren't marked as $99 but scanned at the register as that.

    • Where in Chatswood HN were they located? On the bottom shelf where they had the rest of the external HDDs? I had someone try to pick one up around 11:30-12:00 but none were left.

  • Just grabbed one from Aspley, about 3 remaining. Worst service ever however avoided by 2 lazy guys until I questioned their laziness.

  • HV sydney cbd (martin place) open today and tomorow, had about dozen i think.
    clearly marked as $99

    • I called up around 5pm and they said there were about 6 left. It's one less now. They're semi-hidden away under the wall shelves on the carpet.

  • All sold out in Townsville but they are taking back orders.

  • +1

Awesome. Now i can start making redundant redundant backups.

  • All sold out in Bendigo :-(

  • Sold out at Knox but you can rain check

  • were sold out in highpoint and sunshine today =(

  • salesdude at dandy gave me the last one today!! score!!

  • Picked one up at HN Norwest. About 20 left there.. cheers for posting the deal!

  • i got one. but now i have 1 TB and 2 TB (3.5") also 500GB 2.5"
anyone want to swap BRRIP movies ??? (not p*rn, normal movies)

also anyone know if we have to register online to get the warranty things? how to claim warranty if something goes wrong? by the way, is this 3 years warranty?

    • +2

3.5tb of drives and not 1mb of pr0n? who are you kidding ;)

or are you saying you're willing to swap all movies except your pr0n - in which case thats mighty selfish :p

      • lol
ok, few that stuffs too if you insist.

  • is this 2.5 or 3.5?
i.e. can just plug via USB or do you need a power adaptor?
