This isn't just for old people. Anyone with a health care card can get this offer and so can vets.

    • +20

Why would a veterinarian get discounts
I'll show my own way out…

      • +3

        You forgot your coat.

    • Pretty sure it's for pensioners ie. aged pensioners, military pensioners and disability pensioners. They have their own card as well as a health care card.

      • Nah, definitely for anyone with a health care card.

      • I have this and all I have is a health care card.

        • It's a 'low-income' HCC thought, right? So still fits in with the deal helping people who are at least financially disadvantaged.

        • @sauce: yes

        • @sauce:

It doesn't have to be a low income health care card. Medical need health care cards are eligible as well.

  • Can they get discounted 500g prepaid bags, etc?

    • +4

Not to my knowledge. They can send a 500g letter with $3 of discounted stamps tho.

      • Pretty heavy letter lol

  • +8

This has been out for 3 years now

    • +18

True but it's a good reminder, 3 years is a long time - even before dementia sets in.

    • getting to 10 years now noice

  • Any pensioners want to sell me some stamps for 80c

    • +6

What's rule #1 of secret stamp club? ;)

    • Yep I would.

  • -1

    What's a health care card?

  • Great information OP.

  • Not many people know this but most stamp dealers sell mint stamps at below face value, it not uncommon to get them at 75% off face value and they can usually do 50% off if you buy them in bulk like lots of $500/$1000.

    • Where

      • +1

Pretty much any stamp dealer or facebook group but I'd personally recommend Troy Sequeira of Brisbane Stamps. You can contact him at [email protected]. He doesn't have a website as many dealers don't but he's always been a pleasure to deal with.

If you are after small quantities I may also be able to help out.

    • soz typo I mean 75% OF face value ie. you pay $75 for $100 worth of stamps.

      • Is it possible to use those collectable stamps for postage as well?

        • Absolutely! In some cases they are worth more if you use them because most of the collectable ones you find are in mint condition and not many are used.

Same goes for coins also, every now and then some idiot uses proof coins for tender when they are worth sooo much more!

I go to estate auctions, and recently picked up $3000 worth of stamps for under $1500. They're all in weird denominations of 33c, 41c, 43c, etc, so you have to be creative in using them. Buying 5c stamp sheets from Australia Post helps.

People in the 1980s bought whole sheets of these stamps thinking they'll be worth more in the future. Nope, they are worth less. And that's before the crippling effect of inflation. Even the Australia Post yearly stamp albums are sold for around 50% of stamp value at auctions. People have lost money hand over fist on these.

But that means I pick up cheap stamps for my ebay sales.

    • +1

Why/How? Do they get in below face value?

  • You get same as per this deal, by pensioner etc, going in to local post office.
Much easier for many older or disabled persons who are not particularly tech savvy plus might not have a printer.

"Take your completed application form (also available in-store) to a Post Office, along with your valid Federal Government concession card."

  • +2

Students getting Youth Allowance (and thus a Health Care Card) also qualify for this

  • +3

Your description isn't entirely accurate. I work at the post office.

It's $3 for a booklet of 5 concession stamps. You cannot buy them separately. There is NO face value on the stamp. You are NOT getting a normal $1 stamp for the price of 60c. These stamps can ONLY be used for domestic letters. No other discounts at all come with such an account.

Anyone with a Health Care Care, Pension Card, or DVA Card can open such an account. Need to take the form and proof of concession to a post office to open the account.

    • Thanks for clarifying. I was a little confused by the AusPost website.

  • When will they let us buy them online?

  • Stamps are $1.20 now?

    • -1

Stamps were $1.20 when this deal was originally posted 5 years ago.

  • Can I swap my discounted stamps for a Cartier watch instead?

    • Not required

Once you get into a position high enough they'll give them out free but after you'll need to find another job :)

  • +1

The stamps you get aren't denominated either, like British first and second class stamps, so they'll always be worth whatever a stamp costs.

  • Am I a HCC?

    • +2

The first rule of HCC is not to talk about HCC.

On an unrelated note, did they need to make that guy look so lonely and sad?

Give him some picture frames of kids/grandkids like he's going to write them a letter. Or a picture frame with some bill from a company that still accepts cheques.

I had to teach students how to write addresses in English this term. Even after lots of practice, and lots of feedback, it was still like a foreign language to them.

  • Shame Senior's Card isn't eligible…

    • Income must be too high then

  • Note the concession stamps only work in Australia.

Note you also get free document certification if your a mypost concession card holder. If not it cost 2.5 a page. Auspost staff forget this so remember to remind them.

I prefer to use Domestic letter with tracking. Same as register post but a scan instead of a sign. You also get the same $100 compensation for loss or damage as registered post.

  • Great to see veterans getting looked after

  • -1

    just send emails ffs

  • Not student concession?

    • +2

      Correct.

For the purposes of this scheme, Australia Post defines concession to be the following Federal Government concession cards:

      • Pensioner Concession Card
      • Health Care Card (all types)
      • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
      • Department of Veterans' Affairs Card
      • Veterans' Repatriation Health Card

When you apply for a MyPost Concession Account, you need to take both the application form and your eligible concession card to an Australia Post retail outlet, where a staff member will need to review both before your application can be actioned.

  • What people do with stamps these days? Asking for a paperless friend.

    • +2

I've seen some eBay packages sent with very old stamps. Some when they were $0.45, they just plastered the front with more stamps.

  • This is a great initiative. If only I could think of anything requiring a stamp.
