Card Rejected in Japan but Showing as Pending

Hey guys,

Currently in Japan needing some clarifications. Has anyone ever got their card rejected but still showing as pending on their transaction?

Thanks!

Yes once when overseas. It was showing as pending for a couple of days, and then it disappeared

pending doesn't mean funds have left your account

  • call your bank

    • TBH, until the amount has settled, there is not much the bank would be able to do.

Enjoy your trip, wait a couple of days and if it’s there and showing as a settled transaction, then call the bank.

While I don't disagree at all with you.

Clearly the OP is worried, so rather than ask random strangers on the internet, why people just don't call the company in question, aka the bank in this case for the REAL answer is beyond me!

        • ? why people just don't call the company in question

You mean like an actual person? What if a girl answers?

        • @D C:

You hang up!!! Then call again.

        • @JimmyF: tried to call CBA was on hold for more than 20 mins…hope they don’t do that to someone who had their card stolen.

        • @sauce2k: and what did they say when you spoke to them!?

        • @JimmyF: never got through to them. Ran out of Skype credit

Turn caller ID off so the girl doesn't know it's you. That was you'll at least get to say "h.H..h…hello??" before she hangs up.

  • Relax, how much we talking about

About $1k? Lol I wouldn’t be so worried if it’s like 10 bucks

      • Hmm. That is not good, as while you haven't been billed for it, it would be holding part of your available funds.

I still think the bank will be unable to do anything, if you're near the merchant still, it may be worth getting them to speak to their bank to release it.

  • Don't worry - It wont process, my card locked up on my last holiday, I logged into the account to see if I could unlock it (I couldn't), yet every transaction where I had tried to use the card and it had failed was showing as pending. In my case it took about 4-5 days for the transactions to disappear.

Pending means advice of a charge against the card has been received by the card issuer and the amount of the charge has been reserved against your limit.
The person making the charge has (about) 5-7 days to formalise the charge otherwise it will simply disappear from your account.
Hotels typically make such provisional charges when you check-in as a guarantee of payment against any room charges.

  • Hi, on holiday in India, we had hotel clerks double charge our account. They would get us to put our pin in, process the transaction, then say it didn't go through. They would redo the transaction, always quickly tearing out the "failed" receipt and not asking if we wanted it. This was at an established and well known hotel. Helps to get your receipts from eftpos and atm's. Or at least record the time of rejection, eg a photo.
