Just Reminder about Those Nasty Import and Duty Fees on eBay Purchases

I will be closing my account with Ebay as I'm disappointed following a recent transaction.

I purchased an Item from the US and paid for it.

Today I had to pay customs and duties of $195 dollars because the item was $40 over then allowable for import into Aust.($1000)

IM disappointed because I didn't get a warning about this charge during the purchase transaction. I'm sure its covered somewhere but I expected the price I paid to be the final price.

Amazon can include these charges at time of purchase which makes easier to decide on whether to purchase the item or not.

why not some sort of pop up during purchase of import and GST charges

So because I don't get a final price when I purchase with you I've decided to close the account.

The price paid and postage are both included in the cost of the purchase.

I'm pretty sure it says on all ebay listings that customs and duty charges are not included. The $1000 threshold has been around for a while so you should know about it.
Edit: doesn't seem to be on by default but many listings have something like this in their description (this one is from here)

    International Buyers - Please Note:
・Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility.
・Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.
・These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up - do not confuse them for additional shipping charges.
・We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as “gifts” - US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior.

    • Those of us with a bit of experience know it, but eBay could include it for all the new people they are getting. It wouldn't hurt and everyone'd be in the know, then.

Yeah, there should be a note by default on all listings that are based in a different country than the person that is signed in. A newer seller might not know to include a message like the above.

It has always been a roulette wheel as to whether you would get hit by customs. Mostly in your favour.

There are many reasons to close an account. The constant NON20% 20% off. The constant 10% off. Watching other people have targeted $10 off, $20 off, 20% off while I have nothing.
All these are ebay's doing. taunting me.

import duties is ONE thing that is not ebay's fault and you want to close your ebay account. Oh well..

TL;DR : I didn't do my homework…now I got punished, but I am gonna blame someone else for my misery

When you’re closing your account, don’t forget to stamp your feet and clench your fists.

Almost as long as I can remember on eBay, it has been noted that the final price does “NOT” include any import duties. You are not buying off eBay, but eBay is a market place made up of different sellers. Ok, if it was a single store from the US, meh, maybe they could implement something like this, but eBay, no way.

And you’ve been a member for an hour, so it’s either a ghost account or a troll post. I’m guessing both.

Can we ban this guy from making political comments? I've never seen a single comment on any post be in any way relevant to OP

Diji1 is suggesting that the OP should vote for the "No GST on $1040 Purchases Party".

Don't give him a reason to close his OzB account!

Is this a joke ? Are you aware ebay is not a retailer right, it is entirely your responsibility to know about import duties and charges, not ebays. Amazon is a marketplace, so amazon charges you upfront for import duties and pays them for you. On ebay you are buying the product, and import duties are extra that you are charged when the item gets to customs. Ebay has nothing to do with it, its like you blaming amazon cause your shoes are untied, it makes absolutely no sense.

    • this message bought to you by AMAZON…..we are awesome and tell you when you have to pay CUSTOMS and DUTY unlike those nonsense EBAY guys
      buy from AMAZON..Buy NOW!

By that logic, I should close my ozbargain account because I got negged a few times without warning.

OP perhaps amend title to Import not Inport.

But then spelling is the least of concern here. I'm more intrigued on that fact that such a moronic forum post like this can exist.

Yeah I bought a house and didn't realise there were so many fees on top!!

    Sarcasm off.

The onus is on you to find out. Hate it when people blame others. Take responsibility. Do your research.

Why blame EBAY, this is a problem caused by your thieving government. I wish I could close my account with that mob. But as others have said, most people know about the over $1000 rip off scam they have going. And now they are talking about stealing another $5 from all purchases regardless of value, hopefully that one wont get passed though.

Did you ask to speak to the manager?

  • What did u buy?

  • Actually not including tax and duties is the correct way to do it.

Why would you want all online business's overseas to force you to pay Australian GST/Import costs etc?

And lets be realistic, only large companies can arrange to pay taxes for you like Amazon.

You need to get used to the Internet, nothing on here holds your hand.

  • May as well close your OzBargain account while you're at it. You should be blaming the party that is charging you ie. the Australian government, not eBay.

  • Could it be on the time he made the order it was around $1k less than on custom receive the item the currency change slightly for over $1k. I thought eBay charges the import charges automatically.

  • To be consistent you should close your citizenship with Australia since it’s a customs Australia fee.
And everyone knows about the 1000 limit anyway
