You should never put the device completely underwater; or expose it to seawater, salt water, chlorinated water or liquids such as drinks. Improper use of the device will invalidate warranty. Xperia smartphones are waterproof … never put the device completely underwater; or expose it to seawater, salt water, chlorinated water or liquids such as drinks.

So it's waterproof until it gets wet.

I think it means, it will probably be ok if you drop it in the toilet while drunk at the pub but don't take it for a swim.

      • +2

Used to own it. Waterproof, fine to take it swimming. Issue is corrosion after exposing to salt water.

So after a swim rinse it in fresh water and let it dry out. Easy.

take it swimming, to be able to call surf rescue if you get caught in a rip “ hello, i’m caught in a rip, google maps says in just off Bondi and will arrive in sydney harbour in 50 mins “ …..does uber do water taxis ?

drop in toilet is a big culprit of phone issues, i asked at genius bar as water damage on earlier models of iphones excluded warranty claims, that has a sensor inside that changed state if water entered the phone they could check via the old 3.5mm jack port.

i actually had a water resistant nokia go through washing machine, lucking usb cover was in place and it still worked….hot water, detergent , tumbling , 800 rpm spin..

samsung s5 also needed to ensure usb cover was in place.

water resistance is a great feature to have in case of accident rather than an invitation to take swimming or diving.

dropped moto in bucket of water by accident overnight …want a resistant phone .. dead the next day.

      • My Moto is waterproof and I've had it for years. In that time it has lived through a whole lot of spills - water, beer, other - just rinsed it off, its perfectly fine! It's even been caught in downpours. It's taken a few splashes at the beach, too. The best part is, I don't even have to worry about dinky port covers.
I've also dropped it on a whole range of surfaces and the screen has never cracked or chipped - no case/cover, either.
It's such a robust little bugger that I'm really hesitant to upgrade. I don't think anything else out there is built as tough.

Yep. Sony's video ads were all about taking the phone underwater for photos, spilling coffees on it, and usually had the phone running in a fish bowl in local stores to advertise how water-proof it is. Then they refuse to provide support for use cases they directly advertised for. I'm surprised they didn't get sued.

If anyone is interested in getting this, it would be worth buying a kogan discount voucher on ebay. You can get a $50 discount for $11.70, effectively reducing the cost to $240.70

    • Forgot all about that, will add it to the listing, thank jonsnow

    • I've never used the ebay voucher - is this completely real?

      • +1

Yes, except if it doesn't work, but that why you pay by paypal. I've never heard of anyone having an issue with them.

I have used them 3 times, and went halves in a two-for-one mobile plan with someone else who used one.

        • Thanks for the reply! I'll go for it some other day :)

Or from the classifieds here :)
$10 referral credit for making a new account also!
I've used this $60 off before and funnily enough my tax invoice says I paid the full price of $137 or whatever and my PayPal says $77. Go figure.

Yeah, I included a link to the classifieds in the description above,
to help any ozbargainers get rid of their current vouchers before the 31st :)

    • Looks like all vouchers expire on 31 March?

    Android version?
    Dual Sim?
    RAM size?
    3.5mm plug?

You know, things that count! :-)

Screen size is small for todays standards.

    Good buying though

    • Click on the items link, hit specifications and you will find a long list of further details.

Screen size is small for today's standards.

That's why it's called an Xperia Z5 Compact
It's the line. This seems to be the best line of small android phones these days. All the other ones have watered down specs..

    • +2

some people like small so that it fits into pockets easily , i preffer larger phones personally.

apples reason for small models was so that people can reach any part of the screen just with the thumb if operating the phone with just one hand …… can’t do that with my 5.5” screen, need 2 hands or a desk.

  • Can someone tell me how to use shipster pls. Ie do I need to sign up to shipster using the same email as my kogan account? Cos otherwise I don't see anywhere else to enter my email at checkout. (or any option for free delivery via shipster)

  • +1

And $20 more for the standard Z5….

And yes is waterproof - they (Sony) changed the description because people were doing seriously dumb things with them (diving into water and/or taking them too deep) and then complaining. Main issue with the phone is the glass (back and front) can crack so get a case and glass screen protector. Otherwise, good phone.

the sony also has band 28 and 23 megapixel camera( makes sense as sony makes cameras)

just bought the xiaomi mi A1 $233 inc postage (3 days expressed delivered from HK) for my 11 year old, attraction was android one support, it got oreo and march patches yesterday.

won’t be long before we get a cheap phone eg $250 with nfc , decent camera, band 28 and android one ….

Snapdragon 810 should make it a nice hand warmer coming into winter.

    • +2

      For a whole 2 hours!

  • This is a great phone still. I obliterated mine in a mountain bike stack and replaced with an iPhone SE because of the then inflated price.
Trying to think of a reason I need it…

  • Overheating issue, especially for compact model, checkout Google review. Funny Sony makes all CMOS senor for most of phone camera, but never tunes the software in right level.good on paper and worse on reality. This Z5 series used to call James Bond phone as recall.

  • Regarding Shipster, the shipster website says only free for shipping price under $20. All 3 postcodes I put come to $22.99.

That makes the Shipster deal void right?

    • Shipping cost varies depending on location

      • Doesn't seem to matter what postcode I enter, it's always $22.99

        • Same here. I don't think shipster will work and should be taken out of the title.

  • Free shipping today. Of course when I purchased it yesterday.
