Looking for a new laptop and stumbled across the HP student pricing which has some really outstanding deals available right now. Thanks to user PeteM who advised of employee membership version of site which doesn't require membership. Click through this link first, then click the "Go To Deal" link.

Ended up nabbing the linked 2018 Spectre x360 (ae045tu) w/ 8250u, 8gb RAM, 360gb SSD for $1679 (ordinary retail price $2499), on top they are also offering a $100 visa gift card and I had a $100 Amex cashback available. May also stack with cashrewards but I didn't want to push my luck.

The silver looks like trash, but you can only get the dark ash/copper colour through HN which have a 100% price bump on them.

EDIT: Remember that the 2018 ed is out now, but they're pretty much exactly the same - little bit of a CPU bump. Seems like a boring year for laptops.

    • Absolutely agree re the colour - I love the look of the dark ash/copper HP Spectre.

No need for unidays, just go to www.hp.com.au/employeerewards
This also gives you cheaper business level after care i.e. "extended warranty"

    • Great, have updated post!

    • Could you explain please what exactly is this version of the hp website and what advantage does it give a purchaser ?

      • HP has a few different portals/links for accessing their website and they provide the purchaser with different pricing and at times different offers. For example when purchasing my x360 last year through the employee rewards link I was able to get a discounted price and a $250 eftpos card. However, if I used the student link I was not able to get the $250 eftpos card. Also I noticed a decent price drop for the faster turn around, business focused extended warranties.

  • Anything good with a dedicated gpu? Missed out the one from JB and there doesnt appear to be anything good from HPs site.

I had HP spectre 360 i7 with 8 gig ram and 256 SSD its touch pad is the worst to be honest.the build quality is ok but not as solid as macbook pro which i have.IMO HP offers top specifications but overall not a good all round performance compared with similar specs from Dell and lenovo.

I couldn't find their comparative options anywhere near this price, I actually would have preferred the XPS13, but even with recent ebay deals the cheapest I could find was over $500 more pricey than HP. I don't have an income right now, so bang for buck was very important - I ended up paying $1479 as I consider the visa gift card to be cash.

    • I do love my Spectre X360 (2016) but I agree that the touchpad is average at best.

      • Actually thinking of changing to a Blade Stealth because of this.

  • I had this last year after owning an XPS 13. Couldn't wait to get rid of this. It overheats and it just doesn't feel anywhere near as portable as the Dell. I swapped to a Lenovo Yoga 920 this year and again regret not just going back to an XPS 13.

Add to that the fact that HP have by far the worst customer service ever and I will never go back to them.

    • What happened to the XPS?

    • Yes, I guess everyone has positive and negative experiences which shape their purchasing patterns, I wouldn't ever buy a Lenovo again for similar reasons. Have read similar complaints online about both HP and Dell, unfortunately lemons exist for all brands, sounds like you have had a bad run of them, I hope the next replacement fulfils your wants/needs.

  • Don't know about current gen but our previous gen i5 has gone back today for its 2nd motherboard failure in 12 months. Luckily we bought it for our business through Harvey Norman so they are sorting out the warranty issues, but the whole laptop has to go back to Singapore to be opened up and fixed which takes 4-6 weeks. This is a well known issue and it was suggested that they may just replace the laptop as it's likely to continue happening - I'll believe it when I see it but i can't fault Harvey's customer service so far.

Been looking at the Spectre x360 for a while but the official HP Store really frustrates me. 2018 model eh? Can I get 4k screen? No. Can I get dedicated GPU? No. Can I at least get it in Copper? Nope. Yet all of these features are splattered across the website.

Yep, you're right. Their website is awful. So it's Lenovos.

  • Is there an updated hp corporate discount link? The employeerewards link is no longer working.
