      • woah…what! - so your console breaks and thats it? all your games are gone….

        • Yup. Bye Bye. Nintendo still in dark ages for online accounts. Physical all the way.

    • +2

Digital items are tied to your Nintendo Network ID which is tied to your console.
If your console is stolen or it breaks, you need to contact Nintendo to have your NNID transferred to a new console and you'll keep all of your purchases.

      • +1

oh ok thats not too bad then. inconvenient but at least you dont lose them.

      • Thanks, did not realise that; that's a relief.

  • +1

    Unpopular opinion.

I like the original 2DS best.

The low resolution on the large screens on the XL and 3DS look terrible.

    • Your first line is accurate…

      • last line is accurate

    • New 3DS is my favourite. The screen size is perfect.

  • +1

    That Pikachu version is hilarious

    • +3

Got one for my son .. lol incentive for him to hit high grades at school if he doesn't i get to play with it hahahaha WIN!

  • Can it be hacked so I can play my NES roms

    • +1

Yep, it's pretty easy to mod these days, can download 3ds games and add emulators

    • -4

      No

    • +1

      Maybe

    • Don’t pee in the river when there’s piranhas around.

      • Username checks out.

        • 👈👈😉

    • I read up about how to hack but didn't have the patience in the end…. bought one of those 497 games on 1 card instead….amazing.

      • What was the card called if you don’t mind me asking?? Just ordered the 2ds xl for my gf but no idea about games coz I’ve never had a ds lol

        • Sky3ds or stargate

      • Can you pm me the link?
Aren’t those games mostly crap? Does it have any Zelda, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, etc?

  • How old is too old for the pikachu edition? 16?

    • +2

Ninety. My granny is still playing it.

      • Game Boy version?

    • Depends, do they like Pikachu?

    • +6

I'm 31 and I think the Pikachu edition is awesome.

…and I just impulse bought one. I really need to stop coming on this site.

    • I'm 36. Between the DS and 3DS, I have five DSes.

I'd go for the Pikachu edition if I had an urge to get a sixth.

  • Great price OP. Just a note for anyone looking to buy a 3ds xl and is visually sensitive, I recently purchased a 2nd hand new 3ds xl to replace my original xl and noticed that the colours on the new xl are a lot more vibrant and saturated. I then did a google search and came across a large number of users commenting on what's called the 3ds xl screen lottery where Nintendo randomly installs TN and IPS screens on new 3ds xl's resulting in a number of different configurations of top and bottom screens (TN-TN, IPS-TN, TN-IPS, IPS-IPS). They holy grail being of course IPS-IPS. Comparing my original TN-TN against the dual IPS of the new 3ds xl, the dual IPS was a huge step up and I ended up having a renewed interest in games I lost interest in due to the washed out colours on my original. Just wondering if anyone here has figured out a way to identify dual IPS screens on new units and what's Amazon/ Nintendo's return/ servicing policy on TN panels on a newly purchased 3ds xl? The 2nd hand unit's badly scuffed and has a few scratches on both screens so I am thinking about getting a brand new unit.

    • +1

I know launch New 3DS XLs had IPS screens. Unless they're still producing them it's unlikely new ones today would have one. With that said even the standard TN screen on the New 3DS XL is vastly superior to the original 3DS.

      • Thanks Yuri, just did a search on OzB and found that this topic was talked about quite a bit back in 2016 and 2017 whenever there was a New 3DS XL sale. Comparing the dual IPS i purchased to a friend's IPS, we found that there were different degrees of colour saturation between IPS screens! Good to hear that the TN screens on the new units are improved. Not much of a difference when you are looking at the screen head on (which is most of the time) but there is a a noticeable white hue over the TN and colours are a bit faded the moment you look at it from a slight angle (which I do when changing how I hold the unit).

  • +3

Don't forget the new user $10 off code.

  • I have the CFW installed on my normal new 3ds, but the screen too small! With $10 off, this is definitely the cheapest to date for a brand new console.

    • do the sudoku dsi hack, then system-transfer to a new, 2DS XL
You'll be able to install cfw again :)

      • I have a 3ds with cfw already. This 2ds ships with 11.4. Can you share a link of a guide where I can hack my 2ds using my already hacked 3ds?

        • I used this one: https://3ds.hacks.guide/installing-boot9strap-(dsiware)

I installed that disware savefile hack on my old 2ds, then system transferred it over to my New 2DS XL.

      • I used cubic ninja hax…

  • 3DS or Vita for best JRPGs?

    Would I like Pokemon if I haven't played it since I was 10 and I played Green/Blue/Yellow

I'm also really into Shin Megami Tensei - I know the 3DS has a few, but I heard Persona 4 Golden is the best after Persona 5.
    Would prefer quality over quantity.

    • +4
      1. Vita - it's a JRPG machine. Persona 4 Golden wowzer amazing. Also you'll have access to the full Final Fantasy library up to X-2 and World of Final Fantasy. Countless hours of amazing gameplay.
      2. No. Pokemon is just a repetitive grindfest of a zillion Pokemon you've never head of. They haven't evolved the game at all.
      • Cheers.
Will continue my hunt for a cheap 2nd hand Vita

        • Google for cashconverters. Many people have gotten their vitas there 2nd hand.

        • Look for a 3.60 firmware. Can then install henkaku and play everything.

        • @Ronniefromdashore:

Just checked my vita that I haven't used in a long while. 3.63. DAMN! Ahh well I don't mind I probably wouldn't have hacked it anyway.

      • +1

I have a vita with over 50+ physical games and definitely vouch for this. The Vita is a fantastic treasure trove of JRPGs or visual novels.

That said, I bought a 3DS solely for KH3D and Fire Emblem Awakening years ago. It was fun, but I resold it along wit Pokemon because of the lack of JRPGs on it. Pokemon is a repetitive grindfest, not the fun kind of grinding you get from Monster Hunter.

I'm prolly gonna get this new 3DS as there are a backlog of games worth playing since I last touched it like Bravely Default, Xenoblade Chronicles and the Monster Hunter series.

  • My son recently just broke our 2ds xl by shoving foreign objects in the slot.

It will cost me $94 to maybe fix it or i can just buy a new one for $139 and get the Pikachu edition.

    Decisions. Decisions.

    • Buy new one and sell off old one on gumtree for cheap.

      • +10

        I don't think anyone would a 2DS that's had a kid's penis shoved in it

      • Why would someone buy a broken DS?

    • Where can you get it fixed for $94?
I've got a couple of broken 2DS XL's which I bought for cheap on gumtree.

  • +2

I still think the 3DS XL is better than the 2DS XL. Not sure why 3D gets hate. I love it and the 3D on the New XL is amazing with the face tracking, it locks on extremely well and keeps you in the sweet spot regardless of your movement

  • Is it worth $30 to "upgrade" from 2DS XL to 3DS XL? I know the main difference is 3D feature but the price difference is not much - why would one choose 2DS XL over 3DS?

    • I always turned the 3D feature off on my 3DS XL anyway. It uses more battery.

    • imo, the 2DS XL is better than the 3DS XL

    • 2ds xl fits in the pocket better for gaming on the go

    • 2DS XL is noticeably smaller and lighter, and has a much more easily accessed microSD card.

3DS has 3D, larger stylus, better speakers, larger battery, and possibly better screens (lottery).

      I prefer the 2DS XL.

      • +1

And the 2DSX comes with the AC adapter.

      • If you unscrew the back cover on 3ds xl and leave them unscrewed, micro sdaccess is not an issue

  • I bought my 2ds xl for my son and i to use on the commute but to be honest i have had a lot of fun with this console. Its a real gem with a lot of good games. It won't be around much longer with the switch around. Its a great system and well worth it.

Don't forget to use coupon AMAZON10 for an extra 10% off

    • +1

Yup. Just create a new account to get the discount. :D

    • Code has now expired :(

  • Digital Foundry review of the 2DS XL - 7 minute video

Picked up the 3DS XL Metallic Blue.

  • What's the firmware version for the 2ds xl.?

  • +3

Too many games too many consoles to play no time at all not even counting mobile ones.

3DS XL, Switch, Android iOS, Wii, PC, PS3, PS4 got them all huge backlog here

25 years ago no such choices

    • +2

      First world problem.

  • +1

This is awesome. Can anyone recommend a carry case that will fit the Pikachu 3ds? I have to keep mine safe

    • I would also like to know this. My OCD means a case is a necessity.

  • +2

Just picked up 2 units, got JB-Hi to price match Amazon AU. They initially tried saying no, stating how it's US stock and they don't compete with that. I told them it's definitely AU stock since the DSes are region locked.

    • Sweet! That would really be good since I have can get gift cheques with 5% discount.
Which store did you manage to do it in?

      • +1

Jbhi Pitt street mall in Sydney CBD.

        • I called JBHifi Pitt Street at the Galleries last night but the guy said he cannot price match Amazon because it was too low.
I will try on Thursday and come in the physical store but this time in the JB at Strand Arcade Pitt Street (I assume you meant this one in front of H&M Westfield?), hopefully they will be more accomodating.

Any tips how you sweet talked them? :)

        • @h11deo: Tell them that your friend bought it for that exact price last week. Yeah, the Galleries dude rejected me as well, the Strand Arcade Pitt dude was much friendlier and got a thumbs up after he asked his manager.

Emphasize it's Australian stock because games are region locked.

        • @yanhaot: Thanks for the tip, I will try tomorrow. If I do end up getting it, I will be able to finally play Fire Emblem games! I have a Switch which is all great but it does NOT have backward compatibility to play 3DS games sadly.

        • @h11deo: That's great to hear. I'm currently on Xenoblade Chronicles 3D since I've wanted to play that for so many years. Fire Emblem Awakening is great, highly recommend that. I was so OCD with coupling the perfect marriage partners to bring up perfect kids.

        • @h11deo:

Yeah, I have a Switch, but bought a N3DS XL as well, to play through all the old games that I have never been able to play! I reckon I've sunk as much time in the 3DS as the Switch, tbh! Love both.

          Enjoy!

        • @caprimulgus: I'm tempted to get a switch too. But I can only see SMO and BOTW as the viable games now. Will definitely pick it up if a Monster Hunter title gets localized on it.

        • @yanhaot: Sweet, they matched it! I just need to buy Awakening, I plan to buy from Nintendo's eShop since I still have credits from my Switch account (when I bought "I am Setsuna" for 50% a few weeks ago), besides I don't have much of a choice since the physical game is out of stock in JB.

Lol, I use to have OCD (not just in games) but I finally grown tired it, not to mention the time wasted and now I've learn to just enjoy its spontaneously. :)

        • @h11deo: That's great to hear! Someone gave me the original soundtrack for I Am Setsuna, but I haven't had the chance to buy and play through the game yet.

      • +1

Just an update. I traded it in for $30 extra at jbhi for the 3DS model. Really wanted the 3D function as it's much better now. Just tested it - a lot more stable than the older model! Exchange done at top ryde jbhi.

    • Can confirm this also worked for me at JB HiFi in Rouse Hill NSW.
I tried EB Games first (as I had a gift card I wanted to use) but was told they can't match consoles.

  • +1

Does anyone own the Pikachu edition or Pokeball edition and knows whether a protective case would fit on them? Thanks

  • Argh, I'd totally get it were it not for Nintendo's ceasing production of new DS games. Still have a whole bunch I've yet to start but my current 3ds (2013) is still holding up strong.

  • -4

Wow why are these still so popular? The prices aren't even cheap.

    • Coz the games are genuinely good.

  • tempting

  • +1

    Bought the black/blue one :)

Tried price matching in JB and Target but no success.

    • Those €unt$!

    • They should have, it's Australian stock. See my comment above. I price matched it twice, went to get the 2DS exchanged for a 3DS in different store.

      • +1

What firmware was it? Must be the latest.

        • Nintendo 2DS - 11.6.0
          Nintendo 3DS - 11.2.X

Time to order a flashcard and some NTAG215s! >:D

        • @yanhaot: wow 3ds so low. Lucky you.

        • @bargainist:

It doesn't matter. All versions are equal now :)

        • @yanhaot:

          How about the screens? IPS?

        • @yanhaot: Which flashcard is the best for the 2ds?

        • @oxymoron: It's usually a lucky dip isn't it? IPS and IPS, or IPS and TN, or TN and TN or… Getting two IPS panels in the one unit is a rarity these days isn't it?

Not sure you can even get IPS on the New 2DS model. 3DS still carries some.

        • +1

@oxymoron: Didn't check. Seems fine to me. I only care about the battery life being longer than the 2DS XL tbh.
