Can confirm I also did the same at Officeworks Chadstone. Rocked up late (they close midnight) and said that on the Apple Education Store (which can be used by anyone) they're advertising for $439 and that I can buy there, but thought I'd give I'd go in store and buy immediately.
The guy there either misheard me or didn't care that it was education store and proceeded to discount it quite hassle free. I think you've got to make the point that you're looking to buy and that the education store is accessible by everyone with limits. Ended paying $439 minus 5%.

I succeeded to get David Jones to match $569 for the 128gb model ($30 off RRP) and used discounted/free giftcards to pay. Happy days.

I did the same at DJs. Price match education store then gift card. But when I asked them to price match the Apple Pencil for $129 as per education store they said they couldn’t do it. Not sure why. Didn’t want to push them though and lose the price match on the iPad.
