    HUGE DISCLAIMER

    Bought one of this and it basically bricked itself, It turns out the "Global" rom pre-loaded is not official and when it tries to update it fails and renders the phone useless.

    I advise all that get it to apply for authorization to unlock the boot loader the second you open it, This generally takes 15 days to be accepted, Like wise do NOT update the rom either over-the-air (The standard update option via the settings on the phone) or via a computer. You CANNOT flash another firmware till the boot loader has been unlocked by the MIUI unlock software on a computer (Which takes 15 days to accept)

    Then after you get confirmation flash a custom rom on it, I recommend LineageOS which you will have to find a unofficial version of on the XDA-Dev forums.

    Now if you do, and I know I did that's why I am putting in the time to type this out accidentally update and brick the device. It IS possible to flash the Chinese official rom via a debug method called "The test point method" This will allow you to use the phone again .Videos exist on youtube but this method is somewhat difficult for anyone that doesn't feel confident with both their computer skills and their ability to take electronics apart.

    SO IN SHORT —-DO NOT UPDATE THE PHONE— —APPLY FOR THE BOOTLOADER UNLOCK ASAP— then —FLASH A CUSTOM FIRMWARE—

      agreed. xiaomis are good value for their hardware but their miui is kind of buggy. I wasnt enjoying my xiaomi redmi note 3 and would not buy another xiaomi.

    Redmi 5 Plus is cheaper at Joybuy. US$145 for all any of the four colours https://www.joybuy.com/600256025.html I ordered one and got it within 10 days. It is the chinese version but fully sealed. Just had to use the Mi Store app to install google apps and its good to go.
