Soniq UV16B 55" 4K UHD Smart LED LCD TV for $599 (was $799) at JB Hi-Fi

80

Just saw this on the JB Website.

I've never owned a Soniq, so I am not sure about the quality of the picture… but <$600 for a 55" 4K LED TV is not bad!
It doesn't look like it's the first time that a Soniq 55" television has been reduced like this.

Soniq UV16B 55" 4K UHD Smart LED LCD TV

Be careful - you can't disable motion smoothing / soap opera effect on this telly. I can't wait for mine to break down under warranty

    • Dumb question…what do either of those even mean?

      • +1

Googling "soap opera effect" will tell you everything you need to know.

    • Urgh. Tru motion sucks.

Try Click "Source" button on remote.
While in the "Source" menu, type "200912" and this will open the secret "service menu" with a whole bunch of random stuff.

This was 4 years ago but I don't see why they would change the codes..

That's what I had to do on my Soniq to disable overscan on HDMI 😦. Good thing to, cause the remote karked it and wouldn't be able to change it now.

      • Been in the secret menu. Unfortunately no option to disable motion smoothing.

  • Looks like the main complaint of the Soniq 4K TVs are long boot time, and fairly useless smart TV capabilities.

I used a larger Soniq 4K model for a few months and can corroborate this. The TV did seem to "break" one time but when I reset it all was normal and the problem never occurred again.

    Android 4.4.4

    Geez that is old.

    • Won't run official Kodi either which is a shame cause I think the GPU can do hevc 10bit.

  • If you’re going to go to JB Hi Fi for a new tv, I’d suggest enquiring about their Samsung tv’s instead. Much higher refresh rate with HDR and most of the 6 series models will be sold for far below the ticketed price if it you talk to a salesmen. Soniq’s generally don’t compete.

Source: my partner works in their Hi Fi section.

oooh any other tips on what to say?

I'm starting to think that my deal might not really be a deal.

I've got a Samsung Series 8 and I've never used ANY of the smart functions. I just connect a chromecast and Robert is my father's brother.
So I'm sure it could be good for someone just wanting a screen, but the start up time would be a bother for me.

I'm still glad I posted this here - I have a community of people who have first hand experience, or have suggestions for something better!

    Thanks all!

    • I don’t think I’ve ever read someone not like the deal they’ve posted!

Ahahaha! There's a first for everything! I do still like the deal, and I think I would consider it if I was just after a cheap 55" UHD TV, however felt it was universally underwhelming to most. :P .. whilst not having owned Soniqs, I have seen them and they seem reasonable. :) … that being said, i'm not in the market for a TV, and I typically gravitate to the more expensive models for quality sake.

        • I think with brands like Soniq you’ve got to be careful which model you choose. Or just stay clear and get a name brand.

I'd get this one from Kogan instead, same price but usable "Smart" features with better CPU/GPU and much more software features. A bit smaller, also "4k", plus it also ticks the "HDR" and "120Hz" check boxes (for what that's worth..).

    • Do you know if it is good for gaming or has chroma subsampling 4:4:4 for pc monitor usage

  • +1

seems a decent price for a 55" UHD, even if you dont use smart features,

we have a 32 in the bedroom i've had for about 7 years or so, still going strong, great little telly.
    (no real smart features though)

my dad also bought a Soniq 55" - again no real smart features, but again, great big telly.

im a bit of a fan of Soniq , nothing special but does the job.

i'd give this one a go as a normal TV and potentially get a TV stick for it - id be happy to recommend Soniq , but yeah android 4.4 is way to old…

  • Trying to decide between this or

    Kogan 50" 4K LED SmarterTVâ„¢ (Android TVâ„¢, Smart TV)

    $599 + shipping

Has HDR and some pretty good smart tv features like Google assistant and in built chrome cast.. highly considering this but might have to wait for first reviews to come out in June.

Need a tv for world cup Russia 2018!!

    • I'd go the Kogan if it was HDR and Google Assistant / Chromecast in-built.
I would assume it has a far greater processor, newer android version, etc.

If you can wait though, definitely get the reviews. :)
