    I'd be curious too. I know I've done it with older models of WD drives. Never could work out why it almost always costs more to buy bare drives.

    most likely.. every drive I've got in my 2x NAS are from external USB HDD enclosures like this (2TB and 3TB respectively.. I have 1x 4TB WD Elements USB HDD which I haven't shucked yet as I need two of them minimum to make any difference installing in my Xpenology NAS boxes)
