I would highly recommend paying an extra $269 to fly with ANA. It's direct so it saves 6.5 - 8hrs each way, and it flies into Haneda rather than Narita so it's a quicker, cheaper trip into the city.

Thank you, finally someone that factors in time and effort not just money.

  • Philippine Airlines…
    not even 5xx…

    • Flew Philippine Airlines last weekend. Very enjoyable but not much legroom. Got moved to exit row by nice hostess so great flight.

In flight app via wifi had good content.

We did this last October. The planes are decent but the stopover is killer. It was more tolerable during the Sydney to Tokyo flight because the stopover was only 1.5hrs but on the way back it was 6hrs and being in NAIA Terminal 2 for that long is soul crushing. It's tiny and can be crowded plus the stores/restaurants are horrible. Nowhere decent to eat. The transit lounge is even worse. Picture an opium den minus the opium.

I recommend listening to Mentok and paying extra for ANA. Qantas sometimes has it a little cheaper than ANA. Avoid this at all costs unless…

    • the stopovers are really brief
    • you like wasting time
    • you really gotta save money
    • you're already dead inside

For future reference, if you have to spend an extended amount of time in one of the airport terminals in Manila, try to make it NAIA Terminal 3. At least it's more spacious and has nice shops/restaurants.

Thanks for the feedback - always great to hear from people who have done the trip :)

No probs and apologies if I sounded excessively harsh. I guess it's still in my mind. I also wrote to Philippine Airlines about it after the trip and I told them I had no issues with the planes (decent seats, nice food, plenty of movies available in the in flight entertainment) and it was mainly the stopover that was the deal breaker. There were other PAL deals at the time like Sydney to Hong Kong and other parts of Asia. Maybe even outside of Asia. So it seemed like they wanted to make Manila a hub. Not sure if people will buy it unless they make extensive upgrades to the terminals.

  • What's the airport like at Manila now? I was there 4 years ago and it was extremely basic.

I recall several of the giant letters that spelt "MANILA" on top of the airport had dropped off at the time. Never reassuring.

I just returned from Tokyo on JAL…. I can't do crap airlines any more :( #spoiltforlife

    • What price point did you purchase tickets at Lainey?
      Always wanted to fly JAL

      • As they started direct MEL-Tokyo flights they had a special offer back in May last year (at launch time). Paid $690 return to fly Easter/cherry blossom time :) an absolute bargain !! We bought so much we needed to buy a new suitcase and used the 2x23kg allowance each… so worth it.

  • Booked China Southern for only $599, 1hr stopover at Guangzhou

    • Are all your legs booked together on the same carrier?
CSA have a habit of cancelling flights.
