Other than screen size, how does this compare with something like the ASUS PG279Q?

    • +1

That has IPS panel instead of TN. That's really it.

Btw, the Acer Xb271HU is equivalent to PG279q but with better quality control AFAIK and that goes for ~$800 during ebay sales.

TN panels have improved over the years, but saying they're a poor man's IPS doesn't do the disparity justice. TN is a homeless degenerate crack addict's IPS.

If you're spending more than two or three hundred dollars on a monitor, pony up a little extra for the enhanced viewing experience of IPS.

Pony up a little extra for better car like Ferrari for enhanced experience.

        • +2

Pony up a little extra for mains water rather than drinking out of dirty puddles in the gutter. Nice reductionist logic though.

        This is a gaming monitor.

Competitive gamers will give up the nicer viewing experience for shortened response time and higher hz. Getting advantages is better than it looking nice, if you play serious multiplayer.

        • +1

          165hz = 165hz.

Are you saying the PG279Q isn't a gaming monitor when I've owned both?

If you're at the point where 1ms vs 4ms makes a difference, you're a heavily sponsored pro gamer who has their monitors stipulated under a sponsorship agreement. Don't get defensive if you spent your own money on a TN panel.

        • -5

@airal3rt: What you're saying is valid but no doubt TN is better if you don't care about looks and play to win. If I wanted graphics to look nice, I'll go outside instead of playing games.

        • +3

@shot: By that logic just lower the rez and turn everything off…. bugger that! Smooth, responsive, and pretty. Have it all. Just like a good woman!

        • @airal3rt: >If you're at the point where 1ms vs 4ms makes a difference, you're a heavily sponsored pro gamer

You clearly do not understand blur and how it affects competitive FPS games.

I own an IPS and a 240hz TN. Guess which one is better for competitive FPS games.

          No this is Ozbargain

        • @Diji1: Does your IPS monitor refresh at 165hz with a response time close to 4ms? If so, when you reduce your TN to 165hz do you notice a significant difference between the two regarding performance? If your IPS isn't 165hz, or the TN isn't reduced to 165hz for a comparison then your point is mute for the sake of this discussion.

The poster above recommended spending more to go from a 2560x1440 @ 165hz TN with 1ms response time to 2560x1440 @ 165hz IPS with 4ms response time, which is a very reasonable point as you'd get the same resolution, same refresh rate, slightly lower response time but significantly higher image quality.

Response time is important for twitch gaming, especially for professional gamers in LAN environments, however if you are using an Internet connection you already have increase in response times, on top of the response times inherent from the keyboard/mouse, the additional response time from TN to IPS is barely noticeable.

Of course, do people think the additional $380ish is worth it for the improved visuals? $380 is a lot of Happy Meals.

That's actually what gamers used to do back in the 90s. To get 120 fps, they turn stuff off, but the advantage is that it makes it easier to see other players. When money is on the line, you take an ugly game if it gives you an advantage.

If you're at the point where 1ms vs 4ms makes a difference, you're a heavily sponsored pro gamer who has their monitors stipulated under a sponsorship agreement.

Not necessarily. Some gamers aren't pro and don't make any money, but they just like to win. Some play for fun, others get a lot of satisfaction in winning. If you play to win, every small advantage counts.

Don't get defensive if you spent your own money on a TN panel.

I don't see how I was being defensive. You're the one being defensive here. I did not buy a TN screen and tend to avoid them like the plague. I'm just saying who the target market is, and those people want TN until IPS can have the advantages TN has without giving up the better picture quality of IPS, you have to choose one or the other.

All these experts, and no one wanted to mention that there is a problem with backlight bleed when comparing IPS to a TN panel?

        • Well it looks like the real expert turned up, you. Tell us more oh enlightened one.

Want to mention the complete difference between them? Response times of grey to grey, input lag, refresh rates, colour reproduction, contrast ratio both static and dynamic, viewing angles both horizontal and vertical, back light bleed, ghosting, brightness, gamma, bezel thickness, power consumption, environmental damage in production and recycling, heat generation, operational conditions such as humidity, cost.

    i need this in 27" 2K please.

      • It’s expired
Plus IPS is what I’d idealy want

        • The Acer XB271HU is around $800~ if you are willing to fork that much. Haven't seen deals for less than that.

  • Is this deal still on? How do I claim it for $515.41?
