Do You Pick up Calls from "NO CALLER ID"?

Do you guys pick up calls coming from NO CALLER ID? From my experience those calls are either from telemarketers or scammers, however some people have told me that you might potentially miss some important calls if you ignore them as those calls could be made from government authorities (police, ATO, RTA, etc)or the companies that you have service with (insurance company, bank, ISP).

What's your opinion and anyone care to clarify if those calls could actually be from government authorities?

I started a poll as suggested by tuzii

I never answer No Caller ID but if they’re legit the hospital/clinic will leave a message and Government agencies will follow up with a snail mail letter.

My phone somehow identifies most numbers/unidentified callers now. Tells me if it's scam (literally says scam) or someone's name or an organisation. I have no idea how it gets that information, but it does and I'm quite thankful for it. Samsung galaxy note 8.

    After way too many spam calls here is my standard call answering;

    • if No Caller straight to voice mail
    • if unrecognised number I answer - but if I determine telemarketer I immeasurably mute and leave the call running til they hang up.
  • Need to add another voting option for this…

I'll let them ring out, then call back if they leave a message in message bank with number. Otherwise I'll simply ignore no caller ID.

  • +4

Never answer no caller ID, if its important they can leave a message.

The industry I work in requires me to coordinate an arrival time with customers for their repairs.
Majority of customers ask for a call prior to attendance so they can be present.
Problem with the system is that most people won’t answer numbers they don’t know or listen to messages left even when they are expecting a phone call. Super frustrating to attend properties only to get an earful from people asking why they won’t notified because they wouldn’t answer their phone.

    • So frustrating!

  • +1

Nope - in my world if it's blocked, I won't pick up.
If it's that important, leave a voicemail and I'll call you back straight away

  • +2

I always let unknown and unfamiliar numbers go to voicemail. When they don't leave a message, I know it was a spammer.

  • +1

Only if I am awaiting an interview and the call does not get blocked by true caller. If it is a genuine caller they leave a voice mail

As much as I hate when people don't answer their phones after repeated attempts, I understand the serenity of call blocking. I've been asked to carry a phone for emergencies but the least anxious I've ever felt was when I didn't carry a phone (…until those rare moments I needed one). It's nice to be free from everyone and everything sometimes.

So here's my guide to being a hypocrite:
Install Call Blocker on your Android phone and block all calls not on your contact list so they immediately go to voice mail. You'll need a generic message if you're in hiding.
If you don't have voicemail on your home phone then call back non-private numbers with your own number hidden (e.g. #31# + number, on mobile) to find out who called, restricting your conversation to heavy breathing. Watch YouTube videos on how to survive in the wild and eventually, unplug from civilisation and plan your great escape.

Some people are thankful that outdated technologies like phone calls and email are still predominantly used since plausible deniability would be a lot harder otherwise.

  • It varies. I'm very careful about giving out my number, so it's usually a relevant phone call, rather than cold-calling.
But, I take the view that it's probably a non-urgent call, so I'm much more selective about whether I can be bothered to answer it and speak to someone or not.

  • I've been getting a lot of UK/London +44 numbers. Bloody shitting me.

Yes got a call today morning from “no caller id” and was in relation to passport application!…

It shocks me to see how many people are 'scared' to answer unknown numbers. If it's someone you don't want to talk to, simply say "Not interested, bye". Small price to 'pay' for the few times you may receive an emergency call, or potentially missing a good opportunity.

    • True, but that also confirms your number is valid so you get still more calls.

Much like responding to a spam email, even to "unsub" puts you on still-more lists.

Which is why I personally don't answer them.

  • I receive message on my pigeon with no Sender ID. Should I open it?

    • Just simply ask your pigeon who sent the message :)

      • +1

If the pigeon cannot recall (even though he remembers the way) then just send the pigeon with a new message asking who they are. Life is tough being a pigeon these days; like many of us don't even receive employer funded superannuation. 🦅

Guys try that line when somebody with no ID calls you: "I don't know who you are but I will find your ID and I will kill you".

  • +2

Wont answer a number I dont know. Unless I am expecting a call from somewhere.

I usually google the numbers after missing it.

  • +1

I don't answer any call I don't know. If it's private and important they'll leave a voicemail and I'll call them back, if it's an odd number I'll Google it once they hang up. And then from there I'll block or call back depending on who it is. My block list is HUGE!

  • +3

I go into settings of my phone; 'call barring' then select to automatically block all calls from private numbers. They can still leave a 10 second message (on optus) then I call them back if its anything important. Some wont leave a message though, due to privacy concerns of leaving details on potentially the wrong number.
Recently I contacted many government departments and businesses new to me, and left some call back messages on their answering service.
I switched blocking of private numbers off (in call settings) just for a few days, while sorting this 1 mattet out. Then I will put barring back on. I figure, if you have my number, and you are calling me, well why hide the number you are calling from.

  • I have the ‘leave a short ten second message’ voicemail on so any private numbers or numbers I don’t know can leave a message if it’s important.

  • Unless I am on-call, I do not answer calls without caller ID, and I expect they will leave a message if that is something important.
My phone is usually silent during the day, and I still expect that people will leave a message if that's something important, and I will call back. From my experience, telemarketers don't leave a message because they know we will never call back, and probably block the number. My friends and family will certainly send messages.

I use Truecaller but I understand the related privacy issues. I would like to find alternatives to Truecaller, particularly because I don't like subscriptions, but the best option I found has an Israeli marketing company behind, so I couldn't find a reason to trade six of one for half a dozen of the other.
I heard that Google is going to implement its own alternative on the next Android version; not much information about that though (and not reassuring in terms of privacy anyway). I cannot imagine a system that identifies callers without a database. :)

  • Only if on-call. Otherwise no, they can leave a message and their actual phone number.

  • "hEllo this is Lenny."

  • +1

Generally no but if I am expecting a call, I will pick up. For example, my mum was in day surgery I was waiting for a call to pick her up. The hospital had hidden their number.

  • If the number is displayed but unknown, I normally leave it to voicemail. If they don't leave a voicemail I don't return the call.

  • I'll answer Australian mobile numbers, as my friends are changing their numbers every other day, and typically markers don't use mobile phones.

I'll let unknown landlines go to voicemail if Google doesn't automatically tell me who's calling.

No caller ID? I'll send you to voicemail so you can leave me a number if you want a reply. :)

  • +2

Only if I'm expecting a call.

  • I will only answer an unknown caller if I'm specifically expecting a call.

  • As i use my phone business and personal, will only pick up no caller ID ones during standard business hours. If it is an important call, people will generally leave voice messages.

  • +6

I dont even answer calls from people I know.

    • You need a beeper not a mobile phone

      • But then what would I scroll Facebook on the toilet on?

Police definitely block caller ID when they call. I've had many calls from the Police over the past year and never once have they shown a number. This is NSW.

I have had a flurry of calls from "Telstra technical support - we detect viruses comming from your computer" (common indian spam/scam)

Of course, Telstra doesn't do this, and they now do two factor authentication on any customer contact.

Some of the responses I try when I see a known spam number (Some of them are mobiles with 12 digits… )
    * "Telstra Technical Support - how may I direct your call"
    * "Australian Federal Police - Cybercrime Unit"
    * "Absolute silence" - don't say hello or anything - they will move onto the next number
    * "Speak in Muppets Swedish chef speak or any random nonsense"

    • When I receive those 'wonderful' emails advising I have somehow won millions $s I like to leave messages.

      Like …
"Thank you for your message. Recently won far too much recently and I simply don't have any need for more. Please donate my winnings to a suitable charitable organisation of your choice." For some reason they don't bother to contact me any more.

Always pick up from No caller ID, for me it's either the hospital or work. Unfamiliar numbers rarely, can just google them to see if it's telemarketers or not.

  • I answer them. Hang up if it's a spammer.
For some really stupid reason pressing 22 on a Telstra voicemail will ring the person immediately butt will show as you dialling from a private number.
I leave voicemails, I redial people from voicemail menus, hence I answer private numbers.

FYI, hospitals use no called ID all the time.

  • I never give anyone my landline number, its on the DNC register, yet it gets nuisance calls every day.
I tried to answer one of 3 calls last Saturday to play phone derp with them, and the bastards just hung up on me.
I believe I've resolved my issue by setting the ringtone volume to 0, and turning off call waiting & message bank.
My landline comes with my Internet bundle. Only used for outgoing local calls, and home alarm.

  • my no caller ids are always prize home people.. i saved their numbers as spam1, spam2 so etc so i dont have to answer…i buy tickets online, so i always get paranoid that they are calling to tell me i won. so i reluctantly have to answer.

  • Never answered, my phone auto hangs up on them. ( 1800reverse app )

No caller id calls need to leave a voice mail message and leave details for a callback.

If I don't pick up, how would I know it is not my cousin from Nigeria who has just inherited 20billion dollars and wants to share?

Pretty sure LJ Hooker sold me out. I'd been fine for a decade on current mobile number, ticked the box for electricity auto connect or something like that, positive that's how it happened…

  • +1

I don't answer any calls that i do not know unless i am expecting a call, if its important and not a scam they will leave a message.

  • +1

If its important they can leave a voicemail and I'll call back. Strangely enough this virtually never happens.

  • ABC Phone etiquette from the beginning of answering machines/voicemail/call screening

    A. You called
    B. I'm unable to answer your call but provided you a means to leave me a message
    C. You leave a message

That is proper use of answering machines/voicemail.

    If you don't know you're ABC's, you're obviously a scammer/marketer/scab.

  • I've recently started getting calls from a +44 London number. When I picked it up there was a lot of background noise, and a guy with an Indian accent said 'Sir, we understand you're looking to grow your wealth and become financially independent….' No thanks, bye boiler room!

  • I don't get that many calls, I just answer them all. It is also a work number, so could be a work related call. If it is a telemarketer I'll say "no thanks" and hang up. Scammers sometimes get played for a while.

If I miss a call from an unknown number I wont ring back unless they've left a message.

  • If it is important they will leave a message. Therefore, I ignore it.

  • As a healthcare worker this is the bane of my existence.

Trying to organise things for people when they never pick up.

    • Why don't you PM them on OzB?

  • I always hide my number when calling clients from mobile. No client has my mobile number.

I dont know why some people use no call id, its just creepy and i hang up.

  • Didn't pick up, then turned out it's a Lotto (or somethinng similiar) call trying to acknowledge you that you won million dollar.

    CommBank Calls from Private Number

  • Unsolicited calls from telemarketers can be reduced by signing up to the "do not register":

    https://www.donotcall.gov.au/home/about-the-do-not-call-regi…

This register restricts the ability of unsolicited telemarketers to call any number on the list else they can face penalties.

    Hopefully this helps.

  • If I was in the mood to chat yes.

  • I don't pick up any calls.
