I own this particular model and I have not had any dramas. It just kicks a 1500w compressor which in theory has a startup watt of 3 even 4 times its running. Thing I noticed between this and an older Honda gen was the smooth running on idle and lack of smoke expelled, keep in mind it runs on minimum 95 octan and I run mine on 98 haha :)
Cheers DannyBoy

Be careful with Mytopia, it seems they're a rebrand of another operator called 'AGR Machinery'.
They have such a bad reputation that the second suggested google search for 'AGR Machinery' is 'AGR Machinery fair trading'.

They've left a wide trail of tears in their path:

    https://www.productreview.com.au/p/mytopia.html?rating=1#rev…

AGR Machinery, Edison, Mytopia, and Mills Trading are all part of the same group, it seems.

      Good comment.

When a decent equivalent generator such as a Honda or Yamaha starts around $1800, paying $383 just seems a little too cheap.

As the old saying goes, "caveat emptor".

    • Sydney Morning Herald gave them quite the write up.

      https://www.smh.com.au/business/small-business/the-30-millio…

Another clueless twat journalist writing about shit they don't know anything about.

  • -3

    Noisy? Smelly?
Safe to use inside during a blackout?

    • +3

Is it safe to sit in your car while it is running with the garage door closed and car windows open?

      • +1

        OK! I guess not.

        • +1

The simple solution to all of this is an extension lead..

    • +3

Honestly? You're asking if you can use a generator inside??

      No of course not.

Buy a 20 metre extension lead and put the generator outside down the yard.

You won't even hear it then either.

      • +2

Relax guys. Not everyone is experienced with this kind of stuff.

    • Absolutely… even qualifies you for a Darwin Award!!

If this can really do 3000W continuous for under $400 it's a steal, fingers crossed I bought one

If this can really do 3000W continuous for under $400 it's a steal, fingers crossed I bought one

It won't do 3000W continuous and it'll be an unreliable POS if it even works.

This will be cheap rubbish that will operate poorly and end up as landfill.

Be warned that Mytopia is another trading name for AGR Machinery and Edisons. Any good reviews are generally false.

Their website is full of phony reviews or ones left when the product arrived. This is one review that sums it up - http://www.productreview.com.au/p/baumr-ag-bcx720.html

      Review from Whirlpool

"I'm sorry to say you have bought a pile of junk. Bought one of these off that mob and it was the biggest pile of rubbish, the plastics broke the motor and shafts would not lock into place and the pull stater broke on its second start and they refused to sent me a replacement even after I sent a picture of the broken unit, edisons are well known to sell junk and there support is not much better, good luck."

"It's worse. Alias 'agrmachinery' and 'mytopiastore'. They are scum and protected by the fleaBay rating system.
The Search tab on the left will find real experiences… keeping it local.. then there's google."

Edison's even posted a fake review in the thread…

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2503724

And of course the master AGR machinery thread with hundreds of negative experiences that are all genuine.

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1283863
and then read whirlpool and ozbargain, eg: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/286720

    • Love it when someone "Takes one for the team" !!

Let us know when it arrives and if it's still on sale I'll get one if your initial experience / review is positive !!

      • I'll wait for the "I told you so" messages

Unit arrived today (fast shipping) filled with oil and fuel starts quite easily (easier than masters one).

First test 2 setting heater setting 1 1000w setting 2 2000w, settings 1 works fine setting 2 trips overload light and it cuts out…. tested a few times same results tried a 2000w heat gun same problem. Tried a 1800w loft lighter and it runs with no problems.

Have messaged the seller see what they say either way paypal or amex will give me a refund if they stuff me around.

        • For anyone following at home… I sent a message last night explaining the issue, this morning they asked for a video of the issue which I sent just before 10am.

They have just replied saying to return the unit (they will pick it up at their cost) and they will investigate the issue.

I don't hold out much hope as the units are probably under spec'ed but their response so far has been hard to fault and I'm amazed they aren't asking me to pay for return shipping.

Tools that you are intending to use more than once should be the best quality you can afford - not the cheapest you can find.
It's false economy to think "Heh I could buy 3 of these cheap ones, for the cost of a quality one" the frustration of a tool that doesn't do it's job well is just not worth it.

For generators I stick to Honda or Yamaha.
For chainsaws I use Husqvarna or Stihl.
For portable fridges Engel or Waeco are the go.
    etc.

    Buy quality and maintain it

    • Although i agree in principle the counter argument is
      1. If you use it 4 times a year then that piece of gear is costing you x/4. (so the lower x then lower cost per use)
      2. If you have 2k tied in to a good generator then that’s 1.5K (vs cheap gen) that you can’t use elsewhere (mortgage, loans, CC etc)
      3. These items depreciate so in essence you are losing $$ for the time you are not using it
      4. If you are 'inexperienced' then you are more likely to make mistakes … making those on cheap items potentially may cost you less.
      5. Expensive items may have higher price tag in terms of parts and servicing. (generic vs branded)

  • Can anyone recommend a semi decent one on sale? Don't need much, maybe just to charge a battery….

  • Gensafe Yamaha for $999, they were even cheaper on special a few weeks ago, can't remember the price.

    https://sydneytools.com.au/gensafe-ns105345-2kva-4-stroke-pe…?

    • A bit of a trap for young players on this one………

The ENGINE is indeed a Yammy, but the rest of it (alternator / inverter) are your "regular" Chinese units.

Mind you, that's not to say that 99% of the Gen-Sets out there aren't also using the same regular Chinese components.

T.B.H though, the OP's one DOES have fuel injection, possibly a factor that everyone has overlooked, IMHO 99.9%+ of small ICE problems are carby related………….

  • I guess well see I've got a cheap 1.6kva (constant) chinese generator I got from Masters for $260 have had it two years and it has helped build a cabin running various power tools, it has run our fridge during a blackout. It's not honda quality but also hasn't failed it would have over 30 hours of use on it now and apart from being a bit loud and thirsty on fuel I can't fault it.

  • +1

Ok so after only two business days they replied saying they would offer me a full refund which they know have via paypal. The response has bee fault less but it's obvious they know these units can't perform as advertised. i.e. False advertising the fact they didn't even both wiht a 2nd unit suggest they know very well what they are doing.

The best I got was 1800W continuous which is about 60% of what they are advertising, definitely don't waste your time.

    • Thanks for following up. This will help future people googling around for reviews and opinions about this unit.

  • Some info for people still looking. Was going to buy one of these cheap chinese ones but ended up spending a little more than double and bought a 2nd hand Briggs & Stratton P3000i. Research shows they're new on the market in terms of generators but the reviews have been fantastic. Have yet to use it properly due back injury but have confidence in it. Very easy to start - 1 or 2 pulls only.
