Free Advertising for Non-Bargains!

Is it just me or has OzBargain just become this website where every company and his dog posts NON-BARGAINS.

Sorry, but a "refinance your homeloan and receive a $100 voucher" and a "spend $200, get 10% off" is NOT A BARGAIN!

I'm sick of companies and business using OzBargain for nothing more than free advertising, its ridiculous! Post a bargain, or knick off !

Anyone else share these thoughts?

We need some coding introduced here where moderators can change the category of a "deal" that someone posts. Something like [BARGAIN], [SALE], [PROMOTION] to get rid of all these leechers getting free advertising off this once awesome website! [BARGAIN] is placed on the front page, and [SALE] and [PROMOTION] elsewhere! Bring back the power to the BARGAINS !

If you don't think the deals on the front page are good enough:

My Account > edit > deals > Front Page > Minimum Votes > Adjust the slider to a higher value

      • I didn't say that

  • +1

When was the last time you neg’d such deals?

  • +12

(mod edited foul language)… How difficult is it to scroll past?

With the growing popularity of the sites comes more businesses using it, some good some not.

Bigger things in life to worry about.

Bring back the power to the BARGAINS !

Lol go outside and get some sun

      Accurate revision to OP's post.

  • +13

If only there was a system whereby users could indicate whether a post is a useful bargain or not to them, and then the posts that are most useful could be moved to an especially prominent place….

    • +1

Worth mentioning, we can actually filter out deals to a chosen threshold of pos votes through the settings.
Sometimes these poor deals get upvotes anyway, but I'd recommend to OP adding a 5 vote minimum for deals.

  • Your cruising through the 'New deals' feed, aren't you? Just stick to the homepage if you don't want to see the crap

Suppose you can start by posting a few quality bargains yourself :)

It's a bit hard when I don't live in AUS no more. Thanks for your opinion tho TA :)

      • Then why do you still look at bargains in Australia?

  • +1

That's why we have the front page and the New Deals section.
But I agree, lots of companies use this site for advertisement. Often we can flag it as sockpuppeting but a lot of the time it can't be clearly distinguished as a non-bargain.

OP, you've posted…three bargains in five years of membership.

Be the change you want to see (Ghandi said that).

Be the change you want to see (Ghandi said that).

Gandhi recruited active combatant troops for WW1 and prior to that, the Boer War. How much of Gandhi's dogma do you subscribe to and how would you apply it to the current black-on-white genocide taking place in South Africa?

      • +1

He also changed with age - people are allowed to do that. By the end he was very chill, and, even for all his past and remaining faults, definitely someone with much worth quoting.

      • +2

That explains why he's such a bastard in Civilization (the game). It's always Gandhi!

        • +1

Gandhi is always the first one to nuke me! It's probably the Civ developers having a dig at his transcendentally peaceful reputation haha

        • +2

@airal3rt: Fun fact… it was actually a programming error, his peace was set to 10 but something in the game made him "more" peaceful which in turn flipped it back to 1 making him the complete opposite and start nuking everyone! not 100% how it worked but that's basically what happened. Ever since then I think the devs kept it that way.

    • Thats exactly it. I don't post crappy bargains, and besides theres no requirement to post bargains in order to use this website.

Thanks for your opinion tho :)

      • +4

So you want to be a leecher and complain that those who are actually contributing aren't doing a good enough service for you. Well done….

To quote the byrds or Ecclesiasties, “To every thing there is a season.”
End of next month the end of financial year deals will hit and Harvey Norman, officeworks and a few others will clear stock. It also seems to be a good time for wine deals.
It is also time for the steam summer sale and gog and others do their big sales then too.
A bit later will be click frenzy, which I think is generally lame but usually delivers one or two actual good deals.
Then the Black Friday/cyber Monday deals come in November, before the Christmas sales.

Just relax and take the bargains when they come, you can’t force it.

  • 3 "deals" and not even over 15 votes.

    • -3

So you want me to post 100 crappy bargains so my thoughts become valid?

      • No, I just find it ironic how you're complaining about deals on OzBargain are not very bargain-like yet deals you've posted are similar.

        • -4

Not really. The "bargains' and advertising I'm talking about receive 0 votes, and even some negative votes.

You can either post something meaningful to the thread, or you can knick off too :)

        • @xt3r:

The "bargains' and advertising I'm talking about receive 0 votes, and even some negative votes.

If what you described happens then the stores get temporarily banned. See our performance based ban guidelines.

Not everything is going to be a good deal, stores continually posting deals with low vote average receive performance based bans. This is another reason voting is extremely important, see our + voting reminder thread.

I don't have the exact numbers but I'd approximate the performance based ban system gives out about 15 temporary store bans per month.

In addition to performance based bans, posting limits reward stores with good deals by posting more and restricting stores which lower vote counts from posting as often.

        • -2

          @xt3r:

If votes are a KPI for how meaningful comments are, then it looks like my comments are more meaningful than yours.

      • In your own post, you specifically state:

We need some coding introduced here where moderators can change the category of a "deal" that someone posts. Something like [BARGAIN], [SALE], [PROMOTION] to get rid of all these leechers getting free advertising off this once awesome website! So it just seems a little hypocritical given that you haven't been a great contributor yourself. That's not a bad thing, I'm sure there are plenty of members (myself included) who gain more from this site than we contribute back, but they're not making complaints about other people leeching.

        • -3

I'm not advertising so I don't get your point?

Your talking about not contributing enough "deals" to your satisfaction.

I'm talking about people and companies who actually post crap with the knowledge its only free advertising for their website.

        • @xt3r: What makes you think they have any less right to use this site than you? That's my question.

  • +2

Post a bargain, or knick off !

    Agreed.

    • +1

Agreed, and these stupid companies/people buying of AliExpress and price jacking, this is Ozbargain!

Im with you companies advertising Sh*t deals is becoming a regular occurrence but such is the open nature of this kind of forum.

Go to your settings page, click on edit -> deals, and under "New Deals Page", tick the checkbox that says

Do not show deals posted by Store Representatives on New Deals listing

Then click on the button that says "Save Preferences". That setting has been around since 2014, and you won't see deals posted by business on the New Deals page anymore. Good rep-posted deals will still get to the front page though, voted up by those who are keen to scan through every deal.

  • +5

As someone who posted a "spend $200, get 10% off" (which was my first deal post), let me tell you a few things. My post might have contributed to this outburst based on OP's response to my deal posting. I'm not even a store rep or in way associated with the store!

Like a lot of people here, Ozbargain is my only stop to search for vouchers/coupons before I checkout anything online. And I almost paid full price because Ozbargain didn't have a code for this store. I happened to find this code, it saved me $20 and that sir, is no small amount. And I didn't call it mega bargain or massive saving. It is what it is! Just because the deal isn't relevant to you, it doesn't mean that it doesn't have it's place here. Next time feel free to use the scroll option and move along.

It's this kind of comments that discourage new/passive users from posting deals.

    • +2

I agree, I am so sick of the "bargain police" around here. Put the deal up and let people make up their own minds if they like it. They can always downvote if they are that passionate about it. If people aren't willing to do the hard yards by doing a bit of a google around to confirm a deal then they are their own worst enemy. Don't be discouraged by the "bargain police", keep putting posts up there but expect the flack from these guys. I post with great trepidation nowdays as I am sick of the incoming, but there are people who are grateful so I just suck it up.

  • I have no issue with ozbargainers posting non bargains as in their opinion they think its a bargain.

However merchants post way too many non bargains and they get a lot of clickthroughs for it.

We should be a lot more strict on them.

  • Umm, isn't that why we have a voting system where we can vote for good and negative if it isn't? I don't understand the OP's complaint.

    • No its not, because at the moment even bad bargains will get a lot of clicks before people vote it down.

Also in some circumstances, little positive votes are given, but no negative or minimal negative votes are given.

However when you look in the post history, 95% of the bargains posted have minimal positive votes.
