about the same price as gray imports on ebay so this is a great price

    • Yeah I was waiting for a decent sale so I'm happy to have the camera but my wallet is crying.

      • don't forget the lens

      • i have a 5d4. i'm also crying

        • I'm selling my 6D2 to fund it, wish I could keep it though.

I also plan to get a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art in E mount and the Sony 85mm f/1.8 so I have a few native lenses.

Do you have native Sony lenses or plan to adapt?

        • +1

@Dlee13: nah i don't have a sony camera and don't plan on changing atm. just these specs are so good for the price

        • -8

@nubix: I'd rather a 5d mk iv any day. I've got the previous a7 and the auto focus on mirrorless aren't great

        • @nubix:

You could always add one as a second body :P I'm keeping my Canon M5 and all my Canon lenses since i plan to add the FF Mirrorless once released.

          @kasa:

I drove a old toyota once and it was slow. This means all toyotas are crap.

        • @gavincato: haha true. I haven't tested the a7iii but my a7rii struggles to focus in low light even with native lenses when the 5diii will lock on straight away.

        • @kasa:

The a73 and particularly the a9 have some of the fastest af on the planet.

The correct thing to say is 'old mirrorless are a bit slow to AF'.

I have 2 x a73 and 2 x a7r2 so I know what you mean, but these new toys are beasts.

  • Just pre ordered this morning. Said they will be receiving stocks this 5th of MAY - fingers crossed before my flight on the 9th so i can claim the TRS.

    • I preordered mine too so can't wait. I certainly hope you do get in time!

    • +2

You might already know this, but for the benefit of others you might be liable to pay GST if the item is over your passenger concession (usually $900 per adult, families can pool concessions) and you bring the item back into Oz.

      From the TRS site:

If the total value of the goods you are bringing into Australia that you purchased overseas or for which you have claimed a refund under TRS is greater than your passenger concession:

      • you must declare all of there goods
      • you will need to repay the GST refund back on the goods you claimed under the TRS
      • duty and GST will apply to all items purchased, not just goods over the limit of your passenger concession.

Penalties can apply if you don't declare that you have goods in excess of your passenger concession.

      • +5

Yeh just don’t bring it back in Australia wink

        • i PROMISE i wont bring it back ^_^ (BIG SMILE)

        • I haven't ever heard of anyone getting pulled up for this, so hopefully the risk is pretty low.

        • @tycho:

Just mail the invoices back home and leave box at home.

Got mine for $2998 at digi direct so this is a great price. Phenomenal camera

    • +1

Yeah pretty much all the sites (digidirect, DCW, Teds, Georges) all had it for that price so will be interesting to see if other stores discount it now too.

  • The A7R3 also looks like its on a decent sale (10% OFF)

    https://www.georges.com.au/georges-specials-parent/georges-s…

  • For all the camera wizards out there…..looking at a camera between the 500-800 range, what's good? Would be mostly used for automotive shots, but the occassional wildlife photo or stuff like that too :)

    TY

    • If that's your budget for camera plus lens I'd save a little more and also consider second hand. I have Canon 700D and Nikon D7200 cameras. 12 months ago I'd have recommended saving towards D5600 or D7200. But both these manufacturers are set to release serious mirrorless cameras. It's just not the right time to buy.

If you must buy now, grab a D5300 or above and an 18-105 and look into buying a 70-300VRDX later for more zoom. Since you'll need a camera card, carry bag and spare battery I'd look into buying used. But find a friend who knows used camera gear and buy him a beer to look it over before you buy. Used cameras are a bit like used cars. Easy to get burned.

No todays market is fine at that price range

Look into the fuji ax3. It is their entry level mirrorless but fuji is the most under rated family of cameras. Their most of their lenses are afforable and on par with any professional cannon, nikon and sony lenses offered at twice the price. I shot with an fuji XT2 personally.

Alternatively if you want canon or nikon. Stick to canon. Nikon video sucks as does their live view, autofocus and their colours takes too much effort post processing to get right. Do not get the nikon D5600, D5300, canon700d. They are all old outdated tech from brands who are trying to play catch up these days whilst leveraging their brand to stay relevant.

The cannon m50 has just been released rrp 1.1k with kit. So 10% off at eofy plus TRS will bring it to 900. If you can stretch your budget this is the best value at this price range. It has a sensor from the expensive 80d and 4k and is mirrorless.

Sony 6000 is also sub 900, whilst it is older, it is much much better than the nikon 5600 and cannon 700d series cameras.

I am not affliated with any above brand or store. I am a hobbist who knows his shit, my instagram page is humans_by_harry

      • +2

Lol a hobbyist who “knows his shit”… Nikon colours are great, AF easily as good or better than Canon’s, and Nikon + Sony dynamic range is world leading. Canon’s is laughably poor and their prices are insanely bloated. Canon video is also terrible by today’s standards (vs panasonic gh5 and any sony from the last 3 years). I was at a Canon industry event last week and the M50 is one of the most stunted cameras I’ve ever seen. The canon reps were awkwardly explaining away all its faults. The lens selection for their mirrorless lineup is very limited too.

        • Nope I've got to agree here. I've shot professionally with both Canon and Nikon and Canon is a lot less work.

It's WB is much more spot on and pictures tend to have less of that green signature Nikon tint. Have a read online about the issue. It definitely exists.

Either way, if you shoot landscapes, that's fine but if you're shooting weddings or anything where volume is important, the extra processing time is horrendous. After trying Canon, I sold all of my Nikon gear at a huge loss, so I'm not just spewing crap.

        • +2

@p1 ama: i’ve seen the nikon issues with skin tones in cameras around D600 D800 era or older, but they changed the WB metering in the D750 / D810 and i’ve never had any problems at all. I did the same as you but sold all my Canon gear and jumped to Nikon. Been happy as larry ever since. The dynamic range is amazing and I love that with Nikon’s cashbacks I was able to recently get a third D750 body for $1750 with a free extra battery. Compare that to Canon’s insane prices on the 5D4 ($4000? $5000?). What you say is interesting though because I have shot weddings professionally on both 5D2, 5D3 and D600/610/750/810 and only ever had minor colour issues with D600/D610. The dynamic range and prices are night and day however.

M50 is stunted compared to current "premium" mirrorless offerings i agree however we are talking about the sub 1k market. OP will get 4k (super cropped) and a 80d apsc sensor and dual pixel af. Great for a beginner evern with its shortcomings.

I am not in that market myself but that isnt bad consider d5600,700d,a6000 arent much cheaper and do not offer even that.

M4/3 is the current market leader for video along side sony FF, but it isnt cheap and photo quality, low light suffers due to the small sensor. Hence i have not recommended. APSC is my prefered median. Buy what you like end of the day its your money.

D750 etc are pro level full frame cameras. And of the op's budget fyi, so I have not considered. W/b took allot of work on my old nikon d5200 when i started, it had allot of greencasting especially with sigma's 18-35mm.

Sony files i cannot atest for but fuji jpegs are super nice as are cannon raws/jpegs.

        • @Yarrph: M50 is essentially a glorified point and shoot camera compared to an entry level nikon or canon dslr when you consider the lenses available. Also not only is m50’s 4k video cropped to the point of being useless, they deliberately disabled dual pixel AF during 4k recording! The sony apsc video can be better than gh5 if you need the excellent autofocus for filming your kids running around etc. The d5200 you mention as having green cast is from before nikon fixed their wb issues. Bottom line every system has pros and cons but i wouldn’t touch canon mirrorless with a ten foot pole haha. Either fuji or sony if you don’t want a dslr or a point and shoot.

        • He said he is a hobbist not a hobbyist.

        • @p1 ama:

Oh for goodness sake before you "sell gear at a loss" Learn how to set up a profile in Lightroom and apply across the board. It isn't hard and it isn't time consuming. Slightly more time consuming is setting up a custom profile on camera and shooting with it.

Some of the world's top wedding photogs use Nikon and they're not all rushing out to switch to Nikon.

      • You know your stuff do you?

The Sony 6000 isn't going to be anywhere near as good for motor sports or wildlife unless you only shoot still wildlife as a DSLR. The A6300 may be okay. There is a reason pros still use Canon and Nikon. And Fuji ax3? Seriously?

And I wasn't even recommending the 700D. I said I owned one. if comprehension of what I said is lacking, why rubbish my advice?

Having used both Nikon and Canon, I can tell you that if you know how to do bulk post processing, you can make the colours do anything you like without "too much effort". Do not mistake your own inability to do basic things for wisdom.

Nikon video does suck. I'll grant you that. If you're interested in video, a Canon's going to do better and you can sacrifice a bit of IQ and go to an 80D or 77D if you have the money. But again not in navyskies budget. And why are you recommending m50 if you care about video? DPreview said the m50 was okay for stills but terrible for video with jello effect, horrible crop at 4k, soft 4k, no dual pixel AF for video.

If as your instagram name suggests you concentrate on shooting people, why are you advising this guy to buy a street photography camera when he's asked to shoot wildlife and automotive?

The Nikon and the Canon have traditionally also allowed you to step up to a more expensive body while keeping the same lenses. That MAY not be the case as they move to mirrorless in the next couple of years.

Is this camera made in China or Japan?

    • +1

      thailand

      • whats the quality and reliability in comparison to chinese manufacturing?

        • The same maybe? They are all based on Sony quality control standard.

        • The quality of the Sony A7 line is fine for consumer and studio use but I wouldn't take it anywhere where you'll be exposed to rain or heavy moisture.

    • +1

A7iii are made in China while A7Riii are in Thailand.
Chinese version has better quality control than Thailand. Just google the 1635GM QC problem @35/2.8 and 2470GM @70/2.8 and you will find out what I mean. On the other hand, the Chinese made 24105G does not have that variety in terms of sharpness.
However, personally I prefer 1635GM and A7Riii…all made in Thailand…

      • The 50/1.4 made in thailand is bloody amazing. One of the best 50's at any price point.

        Amazing glass.

  • I'm looking at getting into the Fuji system (from 4/3rds), however, this Sony is tempting at the price.
I've done a lot of research into Fuji in general, and their lenses are terrific and great value.

I don't know much about the Sony system. What general purpose lenses (would buy 2-3) would be good to use, and how much will they end up costing?
One of videography, and the others for photography? Can someone give me a idea to guide my research?

    • +1

if you can clarify your budget a bit I'll try to help.

    • A general budget will help

If you are looking for a general use cam where you dont have to shoot raw all the time to get professionalish results and budget is an issue then fuji. Colours are beautiful on the photo end. I havent explored video much but very crisp from the clips i ve taken. Note their older lenses hunt allot, their modern lenses are F2 opposed to f1.8s so they are slightly slower lenses but af is amazing.

If you can afford the glass, and will be shooting raw to edit then sony. Sony is better in video generally speaking and has IBIS on more models and a better flat profile but these are niche features and if you dont know why you need them then chances are you dont need them.
