    I don't think there's anything chemical free

    • maybe it's just an empty vacuum box?

    • actually nothing sinister in briquettes ….. crushed coal, starch to act as binder and sand .

most of the chemical smell,is from the coal , it’s why you heat them to “ ash over” before cooking with them, so the volatiles from the coal have evaporated.

a few come infused with firefighter ….. i avoid those due to cost and takes longer to drive off the volatiles.

what i hate is the sand …..pay for fuel and about 20% by weight seems to be sand …..

  • I saw this there the other day. The pieces of 'wood/charcoal' looked like they were extruded from a machine. I figured it must have some kind of binding agent (didn't read the box then obviously) so I bought the stuff that looked like actual wood. Would like feedback on flavour comparison…?

From memory, there was Indonesian charcoal, vietnamese and African. we went Vietnamese this time. Used to buy Nam-char (sth African)

    • Yeah they are pressed in a machine, commonly referred to as robo-turds in bbq circles, they work quite well but still pretty exxy even on sale, I try on work on $2/kg or under.

Heatbeads charcoal (the grey bags not the briquettes) isn't too bad, its the best Bunnings has to offer for a reasonable price that I have tried.

Kleenheat prem. & Wa Mallee charcoal are my faves, I find they burn cleaner and longer without any of the swampy/chemically (for lack of better word) flavours/scent that some put out. You won't find them in the big green shed though.

      • The mallee charcoal stuff looks interesting. Do you know if any of this stuff is "sustainably sourced"? If that's not too much of a hipster question =P

        • the indonesian charcoal briquettes are made from coconut husks , so by product of making coconut milk/ cream, etc.

most other charcoal is by product of forest clearing …….so only sustainable as long as our farmers in qld keep clearing land.

    • They are actually called “turds” by seasoned bbqers

      • not to be confused with turds when dinner guests describe what the bbqer has cooked.

  • No smoke? But that is what I want to smoke my brisket…
