I'm kind of surprised a QR reader isn't in the default photo app .. it should be a toggle like video, pic or 'reader' mode. Where reader tries to detect anything including QR or OCR.

It is in Motorola phones. It is built into the camera app.

You can scan QR codes with the regular camera app in the latest iOS and Android.
These apps are no longer needed if you only want to scan QR codes.

  • Thanks OP.

    Installed.
Now I have three QR Scanner Pro apps and I don't know which two I should delete!

    • Hahaha.. You're welcome..
Enjoy all 3 ( or delete the less popular ones :) Cheers !!

  • I rarely use QR codes, the ones I have primarily just open a hyperlink to a website for some kind of promotion. What "pro" features does this QR code reader have that others don't? I'm genuinely curious.

    • I haven't and am not trying his one… but i gave your question some through and came up with this list;
      - store a history of QR reads / results for easy reference (maybe even include the geolocation of the read to help as well as a time stamp)
      - Generate your own QR code to email or print
      - I seen apps that generate 'fancy' QR codes usually leaving a gap in the middle where a logo can go.
      - Allow you to forward the QR code to a friend as a gif (email SMS, messenger)
      - how about not just having the original image as taken but regenerate the QR as a nice easy to use black and white version (which again you can print email etc but it would look as new not scanned).
      - if the QR is a URL (most are right?) and that URL uses a shortener for some reason .. this app could resolve the end URL and display that so you know where you are going before you open a browser and are vulnerable in some way.

well yeah that's the list I could come up with… not sure they are compelling Pro features. Most likely the easy option is to have banner ads in the app that Pro removes - easy money both ways then right devs?.

      • Thanks for your response. When I looked at the feature list above I thought to myself "surely there has to be a reason people pay for these apps, but I have no idea why". Perhaps the only thing that you list that I couldn't do myself with another free app is the fancy QR codes, but I thought that was what SnapChat was for. I still don't understand that though, I doubt I ever will.

I find it amusing that I'm still relatively young but technology is making me feel old.

  • OMG, bargain. I used a QR scanner in 2013 just for the fun of it and I've been holding out for a free app ever since. Thanks, OP!

Interested, but can anyone explain why it needs all of the following permissions?

    This app has access to:
    Identity

    • find accounts on the device

    Calendar

    • read calendar events plus confidential information
    • add or modify calendar events and send email to guests without owners' knowledge

    Contacts

    • find accounts on the device
    • read your contacts
    • modify your contacts

    Location

    • approximate location (network-based)
    • precise location (GPS and network-based)

    Phone

    • directly call phone numbers

    Photos / Media / Files

    • read the contents of your USB storage
    • modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

    Storage

    • read the contents of your USB storage
    • modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

    Camera

    • take pictures and videos
      Wi-Fi connection information
    • view Wi-Fi connections

    Other

    • view network connections
    • connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
    • full network access
    • read Google service configuration
    • I think with many apps, the developers add features to justify the permissions they want to access rather than the other way around

  • I recommend getting a bar code reader that can also read bar codes from image files.

There are times where I've received a code in an image file but couldn't read it because I can't point my phone camera at the phone's screen (obviously).

  • The heck this QR scanner cost $4.39?! What makes it so special?

  • Where is the save generated qr stored? Can't find it with google photos app
