Or do I pull the trigger on this?

ONKYO TX-NR555 Home Theatre Receiver with Dolby Atmos and Dts X $599.00 https://www.rio.com.au/product/onkyo-tx-nr555-home-theatre-r…

    • I would go with the Onkyo, even if you don't use Dolby Atmos, you can always set it up later. The Sony is 7.2, where as the Onkyo is 7.2+2

      • How do I "use" Dolby Atmos? Do I need a UHD player for that? I recently just bought a LG OLED so looking to upgrade.

        • Dolby atmos needs a compatible AV receiver and then a speaker setup to work.
With this u get the receiver then speakers are a different story altogether.

        • [@felto82] UHD is what you see, Dolby Atmos is what you hear.

          @Bippz01:
Apparently you can just get an extra set of speakers above your existing speakers and redirect them towards the roof, or you can add in ceiling speakers.

        • It is good option to have Dolby Atmos with receivers but you need proper Atmos content to play to have a decent sound effects. Normal youtube videos or Netflix or Stan won’t give Atmos sound.

        • @Syndicate:

Thats correct. The addon speakers are called as Dolby atmos enabled and work by reflecting sound off your roof.
Ceiling speakers are the better option though.

        • @fossilgem: Netflix has atmos. Need an Xbox for it. It sounds great!

        • @blergmonkeys:
Oh really ? I guess i have some googling do now.

HIGHLIGHTS OF Onkyo Tx NR 555 Receiver

DTS:X™ and Dolby Atmos® up to 5.1.2 Channels

        • I just saw that.. I thought the Onkyo was 7.2 as well..

        • @felto82:

The NR555 is indeed a 7.2 receiver. It's actually a 5.2.2 receiver similar to Denon X2400W, just not as powerful or feature rich compared to Denon. The 5.2.2 is to denote the traditional 5 speaker setup, with a .2 for 2 subwoofers, and a .2 for either front height or surround back Atmos speakers which you can configure accordingly.

I bought this a year ago. It was half price of RRP at Jbhifi for $424. Absolutely mind blowing soubd. Obviously trust your ear when it cones to sound. I have paired with Klipsch HD600. Just amazing cinema sound.

  • The photo gallery has a mix of different models :S

  • Would it be better to spend another couple hundred and get a Denon 2400 or something from Amazon ?

  • That's a very basic looking remote for a receiver. My Yamaha 5.1 remote has about 5 times as many buttons as that.

My humble opinion would be to skip the Sony and go for the ONKYO TX-NR555 as mentioned by felto82 if you can spare the extra $122. Sony is not known for their AV receivers, while Onkyo is a much stronger player in this regard. Of cause I would go for even more quality brands like Denon which noise36 recommended, the current model Denon X2400W (5 star reviews from What HiFi). There was a deal that someone posted in ozbargain just last month https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/372125

Personally I use the Denon X2300W (2016) model and the sound is really top notch for it's category of 7.2 receiver (5 star reviews from What HiFi). You need to have a good set of speakers for the 7.2 channels to come alive, including 2 subwoofers for balanced low. I added a set of Atmos speakers for front height surround - Pioneer SP-T22A-LR, which have good reviews (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/331824). Currently Amazon US has no stock. The local price here has dropped almost $100 since last year and you can get it at a decent AUD309 (cheapest price from what I can search locally online). If you buy through ebay, use the 5% code to get it at AUD293.55 (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pioneer-SP-T22A-LR-Dolby-Atmos-A…). With a good set of Atmos enabled Bluray discs, especially movies containing scenes of planes or helicopters flying, you can really hear the directional sound coming from above you, very realistic.

A good AV receiver can last for years. My last Denon was 10 years old and functioning well before I sold away last year. Dolby Atmos and DTS-X will be the format of choice for the next 5 - 10 years, since the introduction of the last major 5.1 formats of DTS and Dolby Digital more than 10 years ago. Current receivers like Denon X2400W has Dolby Vision and HLG which will future proof you AV receiver for the coming years. Denon receivers also are wifi enabled that can update it's firmware OTA and a companion iOS/android app to basically control all the settings of the receiver and act as a remote controller too! So if you can afford, go for a quality amp and enjoy great sound!

Have a look at whathifi.com and you'll see Sony receivers are very highly regarded. A couple have one their "best buy" award in recent years.

    • Great detailed review, appreciate this!

  • Ended up going the Sony from JBHIFI.
They knocked it back to $463.

  • I currently have a standard 5.1 sony Blu-ray home theatre system. Bit outdated and thought it might be time to give the AV receiver setup a try

Basically, all of my content would run through my NVIDIA Shield TV unit. Eg, Netflix, Plex, etc

Would i still benefit from Dolby Atmos channeled from the Shield through this receiver? My tv is a sony KD75X9000E

Also, can anyone recommend speakers/sub for a setup with the ONKYO: TX-NR555 unit? BIt new to this type of setup :-/

  • I bought this receiver for 463. I liked the sound signature and sounds powerful compared to 10 year old Yamaha amp.

US market highly recommend this low cost model and they were right. my experience is very good especially with Bluetooth and hires sound.
