    Global Eurail Pass

So it can be used Globally? Not just Europe?

  • -1

It works out at $130-$180 per day to ride a train.

How is that a Bargain ???

I can get a Myki and ride all day for $8 !!!

How many countries can you move between on your day long $8 Myki adventure?

      • +2

Can visit more nationalities in 1 day with Myki than a week in Europe…

I would say that there are very few train routes in Europe that cost >$150 unless you want absolute freedom to get on any train any time without prebooking and at last minute prices.

Otherwise point-to-point advances purchase fares will always be better value

    • If you are popping between countries then you can easily rack up more than $180 per day on rail travel. We bought a 10 day rail pass last time we travelled in Europe and this allowed us to drop the price of the journey considerably. We travelled most of the scenic rail journeys through Switzerland, TGVs between countries and, in one day, we did a TGV from Aix en Provence and coupled this with a Eurostar run to England (this was one day pass). We usually buy the First Class rail passes, they are more expensive but the first class cars are much nicer and less crowded. There are also booking fees on top of the pass for journeys between countries and for the popular scenic tours, but this is not, generally, a large amount. We talked to Rail Plus, who have an office in Melbourne, and they were really helpful in discussing our plans and helping us book.

If travelling locally within a country I would first look at booking through the relevant rail site but between countries can get tricky, particularly, with the various sectors. My suggestion is people do their background and see what they think.

If you are only travelling in Switzerland they have a Swiss pass which has more advantages than the Eurail pass.

I love travelling the trains in Europe, great way to see the scenery and much more comfortable than planes.

    FYI,

People with an EU double citizen can apply for an Interail, which is cheaper than the Eurail.

    • How much cheaper ?

      • Normal eurail pass for 22 days is 616€ (494€ with discount). Interail is 493€ with no current discounts.

At the moment the only passes that are cheaper on eurail (with or without discount) are the 2-3 month passes.

  • Does this pass get expired?

    • You need to activate your Eurail Pass within 11 months of the issue date. You can do this at a European train station, or online using our free activation service at checkout.

I was going to get this but did some research, all the reservation costs i need to pay on top, counting the $1411 it cost for a month was way more expensive than just booking normal price.

    • Flixbus is much cheaper than eurail (a bit cheaper than interail) but trains are more comfortable and faster.

Interail is really worth it on the eurotrain (france to uk) where the tickets can be really expensive

    • It depends on the trains. When we travelled in Switzerland the passes, even with the reservation costs, were much cheaper than the individual rail journeys. Train travel in Switzerland is fantastic, but it is very expensive. If you travel in within Italy I would consider just booking locally.

  • "Global Eurail"? Same as "Global Eurovision", I presume?
