  • I've got the Breville Compact Cafe (not the best I know but I only make 1-2 cups a day max and it's done the job perfectly fine), anyone know if I can grind it straight into the coffee filter that comes with it? I only have a very basic spinning blade grinder at the moment and wouldn't mind jumping on this so I can grind fresh beans each time.

    • Even if you can't it comes with a little pot so you could grind into that then tip it into the machines portafilter. Grab it. It can take two sizes, not sure what size your machine has.

      • Cheers, grabbed it. My machine has a 50mm filter which this grinder says it will work with, so looks like I should be fine :)

    • I am pretty sure there is an attachment (comes with the grinder) for the portafilter.

      • Yeah it does, I just wasn't sure if the attachments would fit my portafilter. But did a bit more Googling and it will fit my filter by the sounds so I've snagged one.

    • Should be possible. This grinder comes with two clips for different size portafilters (50-54mm and 58mm) Push the portafilter into the clip to start the grinder.

      • Yeah did a bit more looking into and my machine has a 50mm portafilter so looks like it should be fine. Thanks!

    • The grinder comes with a little clip-in attachment to hold the portafilter. According to Google, your machine has a 50mm portafilter; the attachments that come with this are for 50-54mm and 58mm grinders. So you'll be fine.

Definitely go for this - you'll greatly improve your results. It'll make more difference than a new machine.

      • Cheers, yep found out I should be fine so grabbed one. Looking forward to actual fresh coffee, lol.

Next thing is good 'week ago roasted' beans. I was sceptical about all the good grinder malarkey, but it really does make a big difference going from a hit and miss one to a consistent one like the Smartgrinder. Once you work out how to drive it, it's fantastic.

This is the first thing I searched for on ebay when I saw the 20% off :) bought for pickup to go with the cheap DeLonghi Dedica on Amazon last week. Now just need beans!

    • I did the same. Going to get a popcorn maker now to roast green coffee beans.

      • I jumped on this too for the same reason. The Delonghi turned up yesterday morning so was very quick delivery, i'm going to be impatiently waiting on the grinder to turn up now.

Need to order a tamper now too :)

        • Same.

I tapped the grinds into the bin and the whole insert went w it so ordered a knock box.
Just also figured out how to cool the boiler. I thought I had to put on the steamer and turn on but you leave it on the 1 cup or 2 cup button and turn the steam lever until it stops (a few seconds). Then off you go w another cup.

Hi there - if you have some basic DIY skills and want a better home roaster for about $80 you can have a go at building this.

I have one in my shed from years ago when I first started roasting - its a great 'hands on' way to get to know about roasting - using your eyes , ears and nose to help you along.

The popcorn machine is ok but you will soon feel the need to step it up from there.

Good fun - worth the 3 or 4 hours to get it built :)

        Enjoy

Thank you, TCC for the link. I will give that a go!

Haven't seen that one before. There's also the bread maker variety. Green beans are so cheap, if you have the time it's well worth doing. I have a roaster called a behmor 1600. Does 400 grams. $500, but with beans so cheap it doesn't take long to save enough to pay for it.

          http://beanbay.coffeesnobs.com.au/ViewProduct.aspx/1153-behm…

        • @wfdTamar: Yep, the breadmaker design is a bit more involved - with re wiring etc. Heard good things about that one as well though. Better heat retention is an obvious advantage for that model.

Another really cheap and easy option is a heat gun, metal mixing bowl, and wooden spoon. I started out with a popper and moved to heat gun because the poppers roast too fast without modding and have a really small charge size. I intend on building something someday but a variable temperature heat gun has treated me really well right up to 500g charge sizes.

Edit: I see the link posted involves a heat gun, so call this another option while you get the contraption built.

Also, for Aussie beans Mountain Top Coffee is great, for everything else CoffeeSnobs is also great.

I can recommend BeanBay at Coffeesnobs. They roast fresh to order and ship pretty quickly.

Avoid buying anything unless you know when it was roasted - freshness is key with coffee beans. The beans at your local cafe may have been sitting there for weeks, if not months, and will go stale.

I only just managed to pick this up after hand grinding 80g of beans every 3rd day for my cold brew. Hopefully this will give the biceps a rest

    • I was contemplating a manual grinder so I don’t wake the household up. Oh well, at least I’ll get a good cuppa.

  • Is this the best option for someone that’s super tight and bought the cheap DeLonghi machine from Amazon?

    • +1

That's not a cheap machine, just a good price.

This isn't the best option, but it's a good one. I personally wouldn't pay more for a grinder than the machine, but that's just me.

    • +3

Yes - absolutely go for it. You won't get anything nearly as good for the same or less money, and upgrading will cost a LOT more without a huge difference.

Don't forget to get good quality freshly roasted beans! Make sure whatever you buy has a roast date within the last 1-2 weeks.

  • Perfect timing! My BCG800 grinder gave up the ghost over the weekend :(
No sales when I checked yesterday but ordered as soon as I saw the OzB post about the sale! (mine damn it! can't risk it being OzBargain'd or jacked :P)

I still might try and fix the old one with that guy's 3D printed impeller. I just wasn't convinced that was the actual fault so playing it safe and just ordering a whole new one.

    • hey bro! i got the 3d printeted impeller from america and attempted to isntall myself, the model they show in the vid is different and the impeller is a dif size.
I was also wondering if anyone happened to know if the new BCG820BSS had a steel impeller to stop this from happeneing because really, i did not use mine much and it failed :(
good to find some1 else attempted a fix on it though! are u apart of any forums etc i can jump on to discucss?

      • I've read the 820 has a metal impeller but didn't really bother looking in to check it. Google pics would probably be enough for that.
I only ordered the 3D printed part recently, still waiting for it but should get sometime this week to give it a go on the weekend.

After I opened up the 800 originally on one hand can could see the stock impeller had a definite gap between the edge, but at the same time it didn't look "worn" either (like uneven marks or anything) so I hope it fixes it anyway rather than being say a torque part instead, in which case I've just wasted $50…

Thanks bargainuser! I just missed this deal the last time it was on and I was struggling to find another deal or model.
It got excellent reviews and a few friends have this model which seems to work wonders.

  • What do these normally go for? I have a Barista Express BES870 with the build in grinder, how much of an upgrade is this over the build in one?

I'm looking at getting a Rancilio Silva down the track so it might pay to get a grinder now..

    • RRP is about $260, often down near $220, sometimes $190, so this is a very occasional price. Great bang for buck for any quality coffee machine under about $1k, though the built in one in the 870 would not be horrible, so hard to say if the Smartgrinder would be much better.

      • Thanks, yeah I think I'll give it a miss this time. If I get the Rancilio I'll look around at that stage.

        • I reckon that’s sensible. The 870 has a conical burr grinder which is an ok starter. It’d be interesting to read forums from people that have made that addition to that machine. Coffeesnobs.com.au might tell you.

        • I’ve heard the Silvia & Rocky is a good combo.

  • Dammit, bought it for $170 previous deal.

Saw the same grinder at the Breville Factory Outlet in Pyrmont on the weekend for $105

    • If it's the same one, that's an incredible deal. You should snap that up ASAP.

  • Snapped one up! Thanks OP

  • Me too! Thanks OP. Legend!

  • Score!!! Thank you OP! This is exactly what i was waiting for after the dedica deal!

  • Ordered this for $179 from the recent Amazon deal. It arrived last week.

I could not be happier with the grinder. It looks and feels well built. Grinds quickly and consistently.

    It’s a bargain at under $160.

  • "Please enter a quantity of 0 or less"

Is this a bug, or is it just Sold Out?

    • Looks like Sold Out :(

Weird way to indicate that on the eBay site

Looks like more stock has been added. I picked one up a few minutes ago.

      • I ordered one too just minutes ago. Happy days!

      • thanks, yes definitely back in stock!

  • Hi all. Does anyone know how to just get hot water come out without it splashing everywhere from the wand?
