    Will these damage my records?

    • +5

Was just about to write a mini review. Yes, these briefcase TTs are known for damaging records however they're fine for those who may just want to have some fun playing inexpensive, old and/or charity shop finds for a laugh.

I've bought a couple (different brands, different costs) over the years just to see what they're all about. Pretty much all the same, cheap & cheerful. Wouldn't class them as toys but not far from it. Managed to get quite a decent sound out of one when connected to a proper Hifi system but if you've got a 'proper' Hifi system then you really should buy a 'proper' Turntable to suit! Few hundred on a Pro-ject or even something cheaper from JB would be far better than these.

      • Could you please provide more information on how they damage records. Was about to get this item for the purpose of digitising 50 year old records for my elderly mum.

        • The Stylus itself isn't refined and the tonearm isn't calibrated in any way so they will wear your LPs grooves out as it plays. If you only want to play an LP once or twice purely to digitise it then it may be OK… but even still I'd personally go for something a little better as you'll enjoy other better attributes including lower background noise etc.

I'm just trying to find a far better alternative… something I bought a few of for friends & family about 10 years ago but unfortunately I can't find them now. They were still 'affordable' and sold by Dick Smith. They were raw Turntables (no radio etc.) and had a very convenient direct-to-USB recording capability but most importantly they used a proper tonearm, cartridge & stylus setup which in turn allowed full control over the way it tracked. They also had a genuine stroboscope so you could tweak the speed if required. They were around the $150 mark and when connected to a Hifi system they sounded pretty amazing for the money. The closest thing I've been able to find in the last few minutes was this but I can't comment on its performance: https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/lenoxx-3-speed-retro-tur… Next price bracket up for USB capable TTs starts at around $250 and there are a few to choose from.

        • Ceramic cart/spherical stylus with super heavy tracking force.

Literally scratching your records with a rock. Of course, if you are only playing records that cost a couple of bucks and are scratched up anyways, its maybe not an issue.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Thanks for the info. We have a 40 year old radiogram but the turntable seized 20 years ago cause never been used. So I can't digitise from that. Don't seem worth trying to get it repaired and it only has analogue out. Not sure if I should take the risk or not on this unit.

@manity: Yeah, your call there. If the LPs are valuable then probably not but if you just want to play them once to digitise them then chuck them out or give them away then 'maybe'.

2nd hand is usually a great way of going for things like this. Here's a decent 'affordable' TT that would've originally sold for around the $250 mark as mentioned above: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Numark-TT-Turntable-with-USB-Aud… Proper tonearm, adjustable arm weight, removable cartridge and stylus plus the bonus of USB. I've never used one of these but those features alone indicate that it's streets ahead of any 'briefcase' TT as it allows you to tweak, recalibrate & repair/replace the critical bits & pieces if required… but I'm pretty sure it'd be Plug & Play and Set & Forget for basic needs like yours.

        • Try a bit of Inox at the base of the motor, the grease on the shaft tends to harden over the years. We repair old turn tables and this seems to be the common problem ;)

        • @Juddda:
What are the chances you are in Perth or can recommend someone in Perth for the repair.?
