Neg Voters: So you think JB Hi-Fi isn't lying and that the coupon code is unique and can only be used once? Have you actually received and read the T&C on the marketing e-mail from JB?

    Specs here: https://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/home-entertainment/rad…

Was curious about the DC out. 5V @ 500mA in case you're curious too.

It also operates on either AC power or an AA battery

Yeah good going, JB. It's actually 3x AA batteries, which is shit really. Should be rechargeable at this price point.

DAB consumes a fair bit of power so discharges batteries fast.
Maximum battery life: 8h on radio (Alkaline battery) from specs

Also 3.6V from 3 rechargeable batteries may cause problems when it expects 4.5V from recommended alkaline batteries. But should operate.

Swapping rechargeable batteries (possibly up to twice a day) is annoying. Would require 2 sets of 3 X AA for almost continuous use on battery.

Eneloops are not so useful in a high discharge device - better suited to low power consumption or low use device, where low discharge batteries are an advantage.

Some DAB+ radios have an inbuilt charger for AA batteries put in the unit. Have a 5 year old Sangean with that feature. Others include rechargeable batteries inside the unit (even on $9 models from Kmart).

Not so common now to find a DAB+ radio that requires taking batteries out to charge in an external charger (more common in old models!).

Why would they skimp on the cost of installing a rechargeable battery in a $149RRP radio? What else have they skipped on?

        • What else have they skipped on?
As I suspected - they did skimp on design of this device - the most basic - sound quality😞

          That's why these are being heavily reduced - it's a lemon🍋.

Not providing an internal charger or battery in an ideally portable device selling at $149RRP seems poor understanding of the use their product would be put to.

Don't know why my reasoned opinion based on years of use & reviews of DAB+ devices & use of LSD Eneloops attracted negs. But this is OzBargain.

      Good going JB Panasonic

      There, fixed.

  • I picked up a dab+ radio from Kmart the other week for $9 unfortunately we don't get digital radio but the FM tuner still works🙂

    Thanks Homer, just bought one.

    • Mate, can you please let me know how do you find the sound quality?

      • +1

Got one yesterday - probably the worst buy of the year for me. i was disappointed at the sound quality (don't expect sound like those portable speakers from like ue boom or bose) and even for this price i think its not worth it and expensive imo.

  • Got one today, wasn't impressed with the sound too much. Question, if I place 3 x rechargeable AA batteries in it, will they get charged while plugged into mains AC ? Thanks.

    • As I eluded to above, the design shortcomings do not support a RRP of $149.

If the unit was designed to charge batteries, it would be listed as a feature!

Specs do not show use of rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately it was not designed for use with rechargeable batteries - but should work OK. Batteries are specified as 4.5V, not the 3.6V from 3 rechargeables.

As the unit is unlikely to detect the type of battery installed, the ability to recharge is unlikely. Otherwise non-rechargeable batteries would be charged - possibly causing damage. In radios with built in chargers (like my older Sangean bought for $13 from Dick Smith) - there is a manual switch to allow charging rechargeable batteries in the unit.

Most likely when external power is plugged in, the socket will simply disconnect the batteries.

A possible solution is to use the USB port on the unit, connected to a USB battery charger (like a cheap Liitokala) but will be slow at 500mA max. That means taking the batteries out, but radio will then run on mains power. Otherwise use a suitable external charger, which would be quicker.

Of course you could have answered your own question by putting fairly flat rechargeable batteries in while plugged into mains power & see if batteries were charged after many hours😉

  • Ta Infidel,
I was planning on getting some rechargeable batteries to try but thought to ask before purchasing. The unit will be in the bathroom where mains power positioning is a challenge.

    Thanks again !

    • And it's splashproof👍

  • Hi, just a note, it doesn't charge the batteries, so it's a waste of the 3 (+1) rechargeable batteries purchased for this.
