Osprey Farpoint 70 (All Sizes) - $149.74 W/ Free Shipping & Lifetime Warranty @ Surfdome

920
MAY20

I've been in the market for a backpack to travel with to Europe for a while now and settled on the Osprey Farpoint 70. As Surfdome had the cheapest price I subscribed to their mailing list last week in he hope i'd receive a promo code. Today I received a 20% promo code which works on this item even though it's on sale. This is easily the cheapest price on offer. As far as i'm aware this is the cheapest the newest model has been.

I found out about this backpack after looking into the highly regarded Osprey 46l but have figured that the additional capacity, inbuild harness and attached daypack will be very useful with 3 weeks away.

See some features on the backpack below. There's also a full description and a few videos on the bag here

If you're after a bag for carry on only i'd also recommend the Osprey Farpoint 40 for $115

Features:

Osprey backpack
Volume: 70 litre capacity
Weight: 1.8kg
Dimensions:(H) 64cm, (W) 36cm, (D) 32cm

Complete with fully functional, removable 15L daypack

I have this backpack, simply amazing.
Really well designed and the small clip on backpack makes for a great everyday backpack.

Bought it for $200 when it was on 'sale' no brainier at $149

      • Thanks for your feedback. Making me feel very good about my purchase after i spent 2 weeks deciding

      • brainier at $149

I’m worth $7500 and I’m no brainier either

    • Thanks for the feedback. do you know if the daypack can be carried on its own as a separate backpack? thank you

      • Yes

      • +1

Can be used as a separate backpack. Has an inbulit laptop sleeve as well as two zip pockets one on the laptop sleeve and one on the exterior of the bag

Got this for a similar price a year ago, great backpack! Managed to get around europe for 3 weeks with it. Plenty room for me.

Also the detachable pack is awesome too, I just wore it on my front when transiting through airports and train stations. Easy to access and helps keep your balance hehe

    • Great to hear. Also good suggestion to wear the daypack around the front for easy access for travel docs. Appreciate it

    • so did you have to check in the main part at airports?

      • +3

You would need to. If you want something to carry on you can't go past the 46l osprey porter. I'm told this is within the limit on most airlines.

      • Yep still checked mine in, gets quite big when its full so would be a pain in the butt to take it as check-in.

And I believe the dimensions would be too big for most airlines

  • +4

The Colour makes it Perfect for that trip to Hawaii……

  • I have the older version, the Waypoint 65L and its brilliant.
So well designed and fantastic lifetime warranty.

  • +3

    Great price.

Strongly suggest looking at going with the 46, especially for a few weeks (depending on activities). Many advantages over the big fellas in transit and forces you to not over pack.

    • +2

A rule of thumb might be to only pack 2/3 full - allowing you to buy whatever clothing, footwear and souvenirs you are tempted to bring home.

The last thing I want to do while travelling is washing. Pack light and you're twice a week wandering hungover through a foreign city with a bag of smelly clothes to a laundromat, putting coins in a half full washing machine and then a waiting around for the dryer because you didn't pack enough t-shirts, socks and undies! Trust me from experience, if you're gone for 4 weeks, that's 7 times you've paid to have your laundry done and if you're on a budget, not everywhere will have a drop and collect facility on site.

I'd go bigger unless I was hiking outdoors for 10km or more a day.

      • +2

I went overseas 7 weeks from Canadian Rockies, Alaskan Cruise and Cuba with Tortuga 44l litres Cary on only Backpacks, weight 7 kg, I washed my clothes in hotel sinks, not a big deal if you have right clothing, wrapped around hotel towels, squeezed it, hang them up, it dried in a couple of hours, nice and easy :)

      • Different strokes and depends on the destination, but from experience carrying a gigantic pack with unnecessary stuff is much more hassle than doing laundry (once a week…)

When flying the cost and time spent checking in bags/collecting and comfort on every other mode of transport can far outweigh the perceived hassle. Better yet find a service to do it for you while you explore - cheap in many places.

All has to be done at some point (imagine a half day affair for big packs with a few loads) and in the rare case you stay at a hostel without machines, it's easy enough to pack laundry sheets/soap for a sink wash or take a dry bag/scrubba to the shower.

    • +1

The Porter 46's shoulder and waist straps are a less supportive than the Farpoint 40. Also I believe it doesn't have the back frame too. Still a solid bag but might be less comfy for long walks

      • Correct, wouldn't take the Porter hiking.

Was tempted by the Farpoint when deciding years ago, but went with Porter as it works slightly better as carry-on and the fold away straps make it more professional looking on business trips.

Fits in most lockers and usually throw in a day pack for short hikes, but if right into multi-day hikes would give it a miss.

  • I think Surfdome is a UK company though? Not that it matters really, a good deal is a good deal. Your purchase should still be covered by the Osprey All Mighty Guarantee.

    • Thanks you're correct. Updated the listing

    • Yeah doing the same lol.. been waiting for dat $84 dorra one but probs a pipe dream haha

Went for the smaller Pandion one for ~$100 too.

      Thanks OP

Bargain. Wish I needed (another) backpack so I could justify this.

    • +4

      You do need another backpack

  • Does anyone know if this has a built in rain cover? There is no mention of it anywhere so I'm assuming no..

    • +2

i don't believe so as they sell them seperately.

Good find, this is the female model to the farpoint

    • How did you get $115?. Because $156-20%off=$125

  • +4

Bought my Osprey Farpoint 40L for $151, so this is a solid deal. Their stuff is quality, definitely worth the price.

    • And lifetime warranty.

Easy to claim too, so highly recommended!

  • +2

    Thank you :).
I have dreamed an Osprey Farpoint 40L for a long time. And now this is the time I pull the trigger.
    Cheers.

    • +1

And it costs $115 only with free ship. Awesome :D

    • Me too! Been waiting for awhile. OP should update the description with a link to the Farpoint 40 as well :)

      • +3

        I've added this now. Cheers

    • the Osprey Nebula 34 is better imo….

funny thing is that its also smaller than the commed 30lt but fits more! lol

      • The nebula doesn't have a built in harness i think that's the key difference

  • +1

the Osprey Nebula 34 Backpack has to be one of the best back packs in hisotry,,, i was gona buy it form them but they didnt have it in blue.. .so had to buy it from the UK…

  • What's the difference between small/medium and medium/large? The capacity appears to be the same.

  • +3

Needing more of a day pack, I picked up the "Osprey Hikelite 26" which seems to have good reviews for $81.90 delivered.

Still qualified for free postage even though the code brought it down to under $100.

    • The ‘18’ came to $79.65 delivered. (Not free posting).

      Still excellent value, I think.

  • Opsrey Nebula.

    This is The One.

It's my current backpack for travel - perfect size for international trips, enough space if you light travelling with less.

Also, one of the few 'proper backpacks' that weighs under 1kg (0.93kg).

    Highly recommended.

Also, looks like it's on sale for a great price. Highly recommended!!!

  • They should name it sillybuggers helen

  • By all accounts, these are fantastic bags, The detachable day pack sounds very handy!

I grabbed one of these from aliexpress for hiking and travel and love it.

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2014-NEW-Professional-Outdoo…

It has a stupid amount of pockets and attachment points, good back and hip supports and is only about 90 bucks.

  • I have the Osprey Farpoint 40 at $150 two years ago and I absolutely love it, backpack in Europe and USA never let me down. But if I were to go back in time, I would get the Farpoint 70. The day bag is SO crucial, you don't want lug around a 40 litre bag

    • +2

Or go the Farpoint 40 and carry an Osprey stuff backpack, though I prefer the Sea-to-Summit 20L Ultrasil:

      https://www.wildearth.com.au/buy/sea-to-summit-20l-ultra-sil…

Brilliant little pack, folds up to nothing, fits in your pocket, and weighs only 68gm. Great for shopping, carries 20kg, and I used it as a daypack in Europe carrying camera, rain jacket, water bottle etc while leaving my other pack at the hotel. Great also for the plane - put essentials you want when seated in it, and your main bag in the overhead. Superstrong and still going strong after 4 years!

      • Yep this little pack is fantastic. Used it as a day bag all over Europe too.

  • I honestly recommend either the Osprey FARPOINT 40 or Osprey PORTER 46.

Both are legal for carry-on luggage on all flights. The porter has compression straps to make your bag tighter/smaller.

  • just bought one. another impulse purchase. thanks for the discount code.

  • I have the Osprey Sojourn 60L and it has survived 6 years of 2-3 week trips. It’s still going so strong that I can’t justify a smaller one even though it would be great not to check a bag in. As with comments above, this bag is great for when you’re moving around a lot and don’t have time to do laundry. The wheels are inline skate wheels which has made a massive difference on dodgy paths. It still has a good harness, but 60L means lots of shopping so I don’t tend to carry it. The compression straps are excellent after said shopping.

Many Osprey packs take a daypack that clip on - the daylite ones fit this well.

  • Is there a laptop sleeve in the main bag of the Farpoint 70?

  • +1

70l ? Seriously, what are you putting in it ?

I only use a Tortuga Air (27l expandable to 35l) carry-on … just fits in those departure gate frames, although I do need to watch the all-up carry-on weight (7kg). Using just a carry-on means I bypass the luggage carousel and I'm one of the first to hit customs/immigration/train.

Remember you'll probably be wearing the same clothes 80& of the time.

(*) the Tortuga Air is sadly no longer in production, although the replacement Outbreaker seems quite acceptable.

    • Not denying you can travel with 27l but there's no real reason for us to, we have a 30kg baggage allowance and my travelling companion is travelling with a similarly sized backpack which means I'll be waiting for him regardless. Also given where we are travelling we will require a heavy jacket and a few pairs of shoes as well as more formal clothing there's your 27l there. Our internal travel is solely by train. We are also two young fit males and are comfortable carrying this load on our backs during transit and would prefer to have everything we need in our bags to minimise spending money over there and time spent doing the washing.

If we don't fill the backpack to capacity it's no big deal as it's extremely lightweight and the 15l is detachable and can be placed inside the bag until it needs to be utilised.

Also, i won't be wearing the same clothes 80% of the time. Let me assure you that.

      • You do you, certainly a way to go. One big advantage of packing light you're ignoring though (especially as looking to save money) is European LCCs like Ryanair.

Allows you to get from one side of Europe to the other in a few hours for a few dollars and not waste days and additional cost on a train.

  • Bought the Farpoint 55 in the US this year for $USD149 so this is a good deal for 70L.
HOWEVER, 55L was big enough for a 3 week trip, assuming access to a machine every 3 days.(I'm lazy).
I managed it as carry on with Lufthansa and QF. In business tho so possibly more leeway.
Great pack, waist belt and straps good enough for a 2 Km walk to accommodation.
Detachable daypack large enough for a Yoga pc .

  • Not really keen to start off the wheeled bag vs backpack argument in this thread except to say….

IMO hardly any1 needs a full sized backpack, a roller bag and a dayback is often a way better solution (to overseas travel).

I’m just saying think carefully if you really need to lug around a large backpack.

    • +1

Depends on the trip, how long, where you're going, gear you need, transport you'll be using, activities, etc. When hiring a car, I usually take a large roller and as much gear as I like (within reason). If I'll be travelling public transport (especially buses) in developing countries with connecting flights, I prefer to go light with a carry-on pack, though I'll often take a carry-on roller (love my Osprey Ozone) with a day pack on shorter, single-destination trips. Other trips where hiking has been the main activity (Nepal, Tassie), I've taken my hiking pack.

Which is why deals like this get me excited. I just want to buy more luggage.

  • personal recommendation

I have back packed for 6+ months using this backpack and I believe that I wouldn't spend another dollar on a fancier pack.

30 years old, 6"1 tall and 80kilo's. Fit me perfect and fully adjustable.

    https://bit.ly/2KMuSju

    • +2

i would spend another dollar to not be walking around with an enormous bag that says CREEPER on my back

      • Yeah, not a good look if you're staying in dorms. Also, what's the weight? You really want to aim as close to 1 kg as possible in a pack.

  • I'm looking for a good bag for 3 weeks travelling around Italy. Ive read that the roads there aren't great for suitcase wheels. Would anyone recommend this bag for a trip like that?

  • Just bought one, that is one good looking and handy travel bag!

  • Travelled 6 months through central and south America with this bag. It went on top of buses, checked in for plane trips, etc. Basically thrown around. Even had a aerosol of DEET explode in it (which has made the plastic inside sticky, but still functional). It's still in good shape, I plan on taking it on my three month trip to asia next. I found the daypack slightly small for some day activities and the shape of it made it difficult to organise stuff inside. Would still highly recommend though, especially for this price!!

  • +1

The bag has now gone back up to its standard list price now. The 20% discount is still available.

  • Can anyoje confirm if the discount code is still valid ?

    • Code still works. I just purchased a bag off here. The advertised bag is no longer available at the price above.

  • Has anyone received a shipping notification?

    • I've received an email that my order was dispatched on the 24th (i ordered on the 23rd)

  • Mine came in today pretty happy with it going to use in this month on my holiday

  • I’m still waiting.

    Allegedly dispatched on the 24th.

    • I'm getting worried.

      I fly out July 2.
