Cadbury Drinking Chocolate (Hot Chocolate) 400g for $3 @ Coles

1360

400g of Cadbury Drinking/Hot Chocolate powder for ONLY $3 a tin at Coles! If you use the recommended (HA!) 'dose' size of 15g, you get 26.66666… let's just make it 25 shall we? This makes a 'serve' of hot chocolate to be only 12c each! A THIRD of the price of pods!

If you are like myself and want to stock up for winter, you are allegedly allowed (I doubt it is enforced) to 'bag' up to 12 tins at a time.

This will turn you into an office or home hero in no time! (I also checked other suppliers including 'The Reject Shop' and I can't find it cheaper anywhere)

Also… for some weird reason this is not in the catalogue! Go figure!

Cadbury Drinking Chocolate has 77.1% sugar.

    • +7

Interesting. I wondered how they could sell "powdered chocolate" so cheap. Turns out there's no chocolate in it.

      • -7

It's largely milk powder which is essentially just sugars (such as lactose) and some proteins. Don't confuse 'sugar' with sucrose.

        • +13

This is not true. The ingredients are: Sugar, Cocoa Powder, Starch (Maize Or Tapioca), Mineral Salt (501), Flavour.

        • -5

          Don't confuse

For some reason your making distinctions between short chain carbohydrates - usually known as sugars - even though the health effects are the same when they're refined and added to foods.

        • +6

          @Diji1: you're *

        • +2

77% sugar is 77% sugar to me. If we were talking about natural products then I'd investigate further.

        • -4

@Diji1: This is not true at all. Your body uses glucose (especially your brain) but fructose is almost useless to our bodies - all it does is cause your pancreas to go into overdrive.

And those monosaccharides and disaccharides are all very different. Many people are allergic to lactose or lactose intolerant, but almost nobody is glucose intolerant.

        • +3

Pretty sure this does not contain lactose. Neg.

        • +1

@StoneSin: What's so unnatural about sugar? Also, any milk chocolate has similarly sugar ratios - typically about 60% for good brands like Cadbury but higher for cheap brands.

        • +4

@Nukkels: drinking chocolate is by definition just cocoa and sugar. Cocoa powder tastes awful on it's own but can be bought separately and mix to taste (probably less sugar to achieve desired flavour) keep in mind 40g of sugar in a can of coke. So 10-12g from this isn't the end of the world per serving.

        • @Nukkels: Yes, but 77g (per 100g) of sugar is still 77g of sugar. Regardless of where it's used it's a significant amount, and will still be stored in the body either as glycogen or as fat. One's more useful than the other, but sugar is still sugar.

        • @Nukkels: Who said sugar was unnatural?

        • @isaacgunther: if I post a deal on cheap sugar.. would you comment on that with such stupidity??. Drinking chocolate is by definition cocoa that you can mix and drink and will contain sugar or a sweetener.

        • +2

@Nukkels: Except Cadbury isn't a good chocolate either. Dark Chocolate is the best and lowest sugar

        • I think some here have missed the part where @Nukkels claims it is mostly milk powder which is where most the sugar comes from.

But this product does not have any milk powder in the ingredients list, and the first(highest) ingredient is actually sugar.

        • -1

@Nukkels: Is it really lactose they're allergic to? Or is it the added chemicals?

        • @zancs: I'm agreeing with you mate, I'm responding to Nukkels.

        • @Nukkels:

but fructose is almost useless to our bodies

Useless, but that does not mean we should consume large amounts.

        • @Nukkels:

good brands like Cadbury but higher for cheap brands.

Cadbury is not a good brand of chocolate!

Cadbury isn't even chocolate, it is dairy milk chocolate, meaning it contains milk/lactose depending where you buy it.

          Chocolate does not contain dairy.

        • @zancs:

keep in mind 40g of sugar in a can of coke. So 10-12g from this isn't the end of the world per serving. So 10-12g from this isn't the end of the world per serving.

Using the amount of sugar in Coke to make this seem better is not a good approach considering a can of coke has almost 2 times the WHO daily recommended sugar intake.

10-12 grams in a serve of chocolate is still 50% of the WHO recommended daily sugar intake for an adult.

        • @Superninja418:

          What added chemicals?

The ability to metabolise lactose is a genetic defect (historically most of humanity was lactose intolerant) that has allowed most Europeans to metabolise lactose.

In Asia where they did not see this defect most of the population is intolerant to lactose.

        • +1

@isaacgunther: Serving is only 15g. Not like you are eating 77g of sugar.

WatchNerd has 15% fat, 75% nerd and 10% (651) nerd enhancer.

      • Don't forget Flavour

      • Where's the watch come from then?

      • 15% + 75% + 10% > 100%.
Come on Scab, you can do so much better.

Cadbury Drinking Chocolate has 77.1% sugar.

i'm surprised they haven't marketed it as a 5 star health rating*
      *when added to milk

      Thanks for letting us know.

    • +2

Lol @ the five people who negged you.

Some people love living in denial.

  • Reading for a rainy day, or today:

    http://www.foodispower.org/slavery-chocolate/

    • Is there a link between Cadbury and this article?

      • For such a well known company they are conspicuously not mentioned. But I have no idea; I've given the deal a plusvote, just sharing general info.

        • Friend, is cadbury not one that advertises fair trade on their products? That may be the reason

    • you must be fun at parties

      • +2

You must be fine with child slavery?

        • If you really cared you would probably have little in the way of material possessions.

        • +1

Depends on how well they do their job.

        • +4

I find the tears of children make the chocolate sweeter

        • @smartazz104: Probably.

  • Also note that they are not metallic 'tins', they're just cardboard. Don't let that stop you though, It's been years since I last saw these at $3 for 400g.

    • I think they've been cardboard for a decade or so.

    • +2

It's been years since I last saw these at $3 for 400g.

They go this price regularly, used to buy them every few months.

    • Price hipster shows that it's there very frequently.

  • +4

Don't forget to grab the marshmallows on sale! A spoonful of Nutella mixed makes it extra swell.

    • +3

You had me until Nutella and you shouldn't have brought nuts into it.

    • link to recipe pls

      • Make hot chocolate as normal. I personally heat up milk and mix with powder. Add spoonful of Nutella and mix. Add more if it's not Nutellery enough. Then add some marshmallows ontop.

  • +4

I honestly just get some regular cocoa powder, and for sweetness add a spoon of honey…

    • +2

Yeah, these absolutely pale in comparison to a high quality cocoa (or even the cheap Woolworths cocoa for that matter) and just adding your own sweetener. Mind you, I do have a tin of this handy for when that's what I feel like, but I consider it a different beverage to a good hot cocoa, just as instant coffee is something completely different to good fresh brewed coffee.

  • +1

15g a serving? You gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.

    • +1

      Why I said 'recommended dose'

I'd probably use 30g or so

      • -1

If I put in 30g, 2 tablespoons worth, I don't think I own a mug big enough to dissolve it.

  • +1

Anybody else just eats spoons straight from the tin?
Adding boiling water is a waste of time.

  • good for spraying ontop of my cap

  • +1

I was meaning to buy some of this, thanks OP! Will pick some up tomorrow.

  • +8

    15g recommended serve?!?!

What is this? A hot chocolate for ants?

    • +1

      That's 4 teaspoons worth!

  • Time to stock up! I put a few teaspoons into my daily mocha.

    • +2

Dont forget to stock up health insurance in anticipation of diabetes ;)
      It is 77% SUGAR.

  • +5

I love hot chocolate but this is shit. So is the hersheys cocoa, ive tried it with every sweetener and its only ok with condensed milk.

Haighs is awesome and so is bracegirdles. Any other recommendations?

    • +1

I like this cocoa from Coffee Snobs, obviously not economical to buy just a packet of cocoa but it's worth adding to an order if the other teas and coffees they have are also what you're after.

    • +3

Highly recommend Mork, very very high quality cacao + excellent tasting in ranges from 50% up to 85%
not in the spirit of OzBARGAIN… but Once you go Mork - you don't go back… ( the dark choc + sea salt is damn good )

      http://morkchocolate.com.au/our-range/

      • Wait so buy this and melt in milk?

    • +1

Just buy good quality cocoa powder and mix to your own taste. 1 part cocoa powder to 1 part sugar gets you a nice dark flavour. 1 part CP to 1.5-2 parts of sugar will be sweeter if you prefer milk chocolate. Mix with hot milk. Voila! Will be so much better than any premix with added nasties.

(In this case a part means a heaped teaspoon)

  • Just bought one of these at Aldi. Either $2.99 or $3.99. Good for making a mocha with.

    • +1

      3.99 at Aldi.

  • +1

Does anyone know a healthy and tasty hot chocolate alternative?

    • +2

Great 0 calorie beverage - water.

Hot chocolate is healthy in moderate amounts, it's a hot delicious stress reliever.

      • Lol. Thanks mate. I was looking for Hot Chocolate brand which does not have too much sugar and isnot bad in taste.

    • +3

      Cocoa?
you do want to avoid such high sugar products, as the damage to blood vessels is hidden but can be significant. Particularly if your body patches these areas with cholesterol. And patches, and patches. The results can be very debilitating, but it won't happen to you, it is always someone else that has their life ruined and goes into the stats.

If you do have these, use full cream milk, as it has a lower GI. Just have it as a treat and savor each mouthful.

      • First they came for my cigarettes, now they are coming for my hot chocolate.

    • +1

buy cocoa powder? add milk n sugar, you will love it

  • Not in the spirit of OzBARGAIN… but Once you go Mork - you don't go back…

    http://morkchocolate.com.au/our-range/

  • +1
