Bupa 6% Cashback via Cashrewards + 6 Weeks Free + 2/6mth Extras Waits Waived

150

Tax time is coming so I'm doing the annual shop around with my insurance policies..

Cashrewards and Bupa look to have the best offer if you are taking out both Hospital and Extras.

As per the Cashrewards page: Join Bupa on selected health cover by 30 June and you’ll receive 6 weeks free health cover, plus 2 & 6 months extras waiting periods waived. Only eligible if joining online.

Looks to be (by far) the best offer from any provider in the market at the moment:
e.g.
AHM offering one month free and 2/6mth waiver,
Medibank offering up to $400 Specsavers voucher with 2/6mth waiver,
NIB offering up to $200 cashback with 2/6mth waiver,
Australian Unity offering 2month + Optical waiver.

I’d recommend doing a bit of research before buying Bupa. See what other companies give and who you can use (eg using someone you want to use vs a ‘preferred provider’). These products, as always, are more then just the dollars they cost.

I saw this and was a little concerned too! Health Insurance premiums continue to go up and the restrictions seem to increase… This is the case for virtually every fund though. Cue Mediscare debate.

The link you've provided seems to outline the changes quite succinctly, and I did a little research into these changes that they are making myself. Whilst I'm no expert, to summarise, it appears that lower levels of cover which once provided a benefit in a Public Hospital for a 'restricted' service will no longer receive a benefit at all. Funnily enough, all Bupa seems to have done is align itself with the other big funds?

I just made the mistake of going to a dentist that wasn't a "preferred provider" with Bupa. Cost me a fortune! I got pretty much nothing back, and half the things weren't even covered at all. Moral of the story is to make sure your regular dentist is Bupa preferred before you go ahead and sign up with them (or just don't bother getting extras cover!).

      • +1

Burtie it's happened to me before too! It makes it really challenging to see the value in having extras cover when you have a poor experience and get 30% back for not going to the right place; particularly if you're fond of your existing Dentist and don't want to be told where you have to go. Before my old dentist retired I stuck with Medibank as that was who he was a preferred provider with but since he has retired I've been happy to move around and have tried different dentists with each health fund and have had a good run. That's just me though and I'm sure there's plenty of people who haven't been as lucky.

I've done the numbers over the years and when we have been 'healthy', the insurance seems to be a 'waste' but in our less fortunate years we seem to have come out on top. I guess that's just the way insurance works though right? Plenty of arguments for and against, my opinion has always been that I'd rather have it and not need it…

      • I think the moral of the story is to pay an extra $10/month and use a private health company that lets you chose your own health provider.

  • Anyone know what the cashback is base on? Is it ongoing? Doesn’t say on the cashrewards site.

    • I believe it is based on the yearly amount you pay which equates to just under one month free!

  • Does anyone know the best cover of your looking to use it to purchase prescription glasses?

  • If you need hip or knee replacements, probably don't want to use Bupa, cos its not covered under the standard covers….

    • They don't cover Dialysis either. Crazy

    • +1

Is it included on the 'standard' cover for any other fund? I've been looking to ensure I'm comparing apples with apples across all funds and from what I have seen, Hip & Knee replacements are only included on Top cover at Medibank, NIB and the other big funds too?

      • Bupa recently sent an email out saying they were dropping a few things. Neck fusion was one of them which was relevant to me. I have not switched yet but will be. Cheers for the post.

        • Maintaining the affordability of your cover:

          • Feedback from customers has shown the value of 'minimum benefits' (restricted cover) included in their health cover were not clear. To help keep premiums as low as possible, we're no longer paying benefits on the following services from 1 July 2018:

          • hip and knee replacement
          • cataract and eye lens procedures
          • renal dialysis for chronic renal failure
          • pregnancy and birth related services
          • IVF and assisted reproductive services
          • obesity related procedures and surgeries
          • abdominoplasty and lipectomy

          • From 1 July 2018, we'll no longer cover spinal fusion on your health cover.

This was basic hospital - email sent 1 March 18.

Nothing to do with bupa, you need top cover for that. All funds do that for restricted policies.

  • changed from bupa to HCF recently.

  • I think from August onward, if you need surgery, unless the doctor/hospital you’re attending have signed an agreement with Bupa, you won’t get much (if at all) back. You’ll be a lot out of pocket. They will force you to choose their providers.

  • They are the only health insurance provider that covers lasik though, thats why I joined up. Though from june onwards its a 3 year wait, currently it's one year.

    • +1

You do realise you would have spent nearly $4000 in premiums after one year?

      • its crazy what little cover you get for ~$150 per mth these days.
        over $1800 per year…

  • I am currently with Bupa on Young Single Choice cover, can i take advantage of this offer? Any suggestions which other provider i should consider.

  • Any idea how and when the 6% cashback is credited back?

    • Via cashrewards

      • Yea I know. But I mean the 6% cashback - Paid back monthly? Or after 6 or 12 months?

        • Cashrewards cashback schedule:

Estimated approval: Up to 90 Days

    • Bupa CashRewards details: https://www.cashrewards.com.au/bupa

  • Do you get velocity points as well?

    • The special offer terms say not available in conjunction with any other offer so my guess is no.. worth a try though?

Looks like they have a new up to 100,000 points offer available too. 6 weeks free and 6% cashback seems like a better deal to me though

  • Defence Health has competitive policies with good coverage if you are eligible: https://www.defencehealth.com.au/

  • How do you claim the 6 weeks free? Just done a quote and it's still same price.

    • My guess is that once you pay for your first month (which you have to as part of signing up) you would get the next 6 weeks free after that

  • this is why the private system only puts 84 cents in the $ back into the health system, while medicare achieves a respectable 94 cents.

  • Thanks OP, I was still searching from last week. I had a quote online for medibank getting ready for a child, the quote came up to $480 a month is that alot?

Sorry As I am still searching for the best deal.

    Other members any insight?

    Cheers

    • Well I pay for $260 per month for family cover with HIF so $480 seems rather high, although pregnancy might come into it

    • Cost seems to vary by state and how much you earn also affects how much of the government rebate you get. Standard Hospital (which covers pregnancy related expenses) in QLD for a Family shows at $293.30 a month

  • If you're in Sydney Metro and have the unfortunate need to visit the excellent Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, they have singled out Bupa as one of the only main private health insurers not signed on. By that I mean they have full height posters urging Bupa customers to contact Bupa about signing on so they could be covered.

The discount is appealing to all us ozbargainers but as a current 'top hospital' BUPA customer I would strongly recommend NOT to join them.

I've had private health insurance for my entire life and never been in hospital overnight for anything.

I recently moved from my own single policy with a different insurer to BUPA family cover, and a few unexpected health issues came up with my family, and you would expect these occasions are the very purpose for paying over $400 a month for top hospital cover.
But when attempting to arrange an acute hospital admission on two occasions, BUPA have been nothing but obstructive, being unwilling to cover these admissions…not without requesting applications for 'pre-existing conditions' which would cause significant delays as they have informed me there is a 2 week turnaround time to get a verdict whether something is approved or denied, even though we dont have any pre-existing conditions!! They are just trying to prevent me from accessing healthcare in a timely manner in the hope I'll figure it out some other way so they don't have to cough up anything.
So in the first instance we just did our best to sort it out thru multiple specialist reviews in their rooms which obviously the health funds don't cover, but when a second unrelated issue came up BUPA have been obstructive again , so now I've submitted an application and am awaiting the verdict, which seems completely silly but they've just build up this paper wall of bureaucracy to try and piss off customers in the hope you will just persist with suffering or give in and find your own solution that doesn't involve a hospital admission.
It has certainly been a disruptive experience and anything but helpful.

Furthermore their phone customer service is substandard. After reading the insurance policy I contacted the call centre to merge into family cover, and discuss particular policy costs/differences (because you can't easily compare obsolete policies and current policies online when you are on a corporate plan) when the questions became too hard and they said they would ask their manager they just pretend to do this and instead hang up on you. At first I thought this was just a mistake but this has happened to me no less than 4 separate times with 4 separate operators…the call centre staff just can't be bothered trying to actually help you. One of them even took my credit card details to sign me up but when he couldn't answer a question for me yes i was hung up on, and when i went into the bupa store the next day low and behold whilst my conversation had been terminated prematurely he had already signed me up and earned whatever commission he gets from sealing a deal.

  • so 6% for the first 12 mth premium…

afterwards find a new provider? or does it continue on?

  • Is it 6 weeks free on any package? Because the lady I chatted to said it wasn't applicable to Active Saver but I can't see that in the T&Cs …
