Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is cheaper here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/380783

  • +5

you can buy Xiaomi Mi A1 cheaper and faster at aliexpress. delivered within days via DHL.

  • +2

so why did this show up under freebie again

  • +1

The Mi A1 is the worst xiaomi phone i've owned to date. Adaptive brightness is rubbish, battery life is rubbish, screen responsiveness ordinary. The only thing it has going for it is that it's android.

    • whoa your A1 is not faulty? I thought the phone had it all minus B28 and NFC

      • +2

My Redmi Note 3 also has terrible adaptive brightness.

If you want want it all (B28 and NFC and better screen) then Sharp Aquos S2 has it all for ~$215 Joybuy.

        • +1

yep we got A1, should have gotten sharp for band 28 and nfc, S2 will also do treble (official announcement).

        • @garage sale:

Where do you find Sharp Aquos S2 for ~$215?
I have searched but only see expired deals

        • @Edson:

The Sharp Aquos S2 was $215.

Best you can get it atm about $271 which is still a good price if you don't want to wait considering how awesome the phone is.
However I'd imagine it should go down unless they are happy with the amount of people buying.

          Here is the link:

          https://www.joybuy.com/600119598.html

        • Sharp Aquos S2 is a great phone but:

          • No custom ROMs available
          • Hardly any support at all in XDA
          • Lack of headphone jack (3.5 mm)

Those 3 reasons are why people go for the Mi A1 instead.

        • +1

          @SDF05:

Average phone users don't need custom ROMs or support via XDA.

No headphone jack can be annoying but bluetooth headphone prices are going down. It also comes with an adapter anyway.

        • +1

          @treeman:

Probably not for casual users, but those features not being there doesn't really make it a good recommendation either. Most casual people will go for an iPhone X anyways.

        • @SDF05:

And the casual user is be in ripped off.

    • idk how people use adaptive brightness ive never had a phone that i liked the levbel of brightness it gave including my galaxy s7.

      • +1

To me it seems like adaptive brightness is quite varied amongst devices with some set too low or having annoying noticeable jumps in brightness.

You can tune it yourself with some (all?) firmwares and root.

Aquos S2 adaptive is one of the best I've used, completely smooth changes and good levels.

        • Aquos S2 is an underrated phone for Australia, has our bands, and it is an official project treble phone.

        • @garage sale: wtf is project tremble?
Mi A1 is already apart of android one program for fast updates and has stock android.
Ive never even heard of treble before today for some reason.

@Axelstrife: google does patches and some of the bundled generic apps but with oreo it’s still a big chunk of phone specific software ….next iteration phone manufacturer just provides interface to the hardware layer and google does the rest ….. it’s heading to the model like a pc ….. windows does the software and the hardware manufacturer just does the drivers so your camera software will be google and all you get from the phone supplier is a driver ….. google are just making things more modular and simpler for the hardware manufactuers.

phones that were released with oreo had to be android 8 treble compliant …..phones released with nougat didn’t need to be treble compliant in their oreo release and it’s a major refit that many manufactuers won’t do ……

google is talking about in the future 6 year support for treble compliant phones ……so the A1 which we bought came with nougat ….so,it’s currently not treble compliant on the android 8 oreo release …. might have shorter life span than we had hoped when we bought it.

goggle lists which ones are compliant and which ones aren’t in the android one program and oreo releases.

      • That's the first thing I turn off. Turning it off apparently helps extend the battery life. One less process or sensor used or something.

    • +1

That's a shame. Was quoted $110 from Samsung and $120 from a hole in a wall shop to replace a battery in my phone so the plan was to move to the A1 (and a 5G phone next year) I've read a few comments like yours though that are making me think a power bank is the better idea.

    • +1

      not just android ….android ONE,

we have one in our household, runs OK, only down side is no band 28, we do about 20GB of data per month on it

also might not be on official treble roadmap where as the sharp and some other cheapies are.

  • +1

    I love my A1
fantastic battery (no screensaver or always on screen gimmicks), I can get 3 days out of this phone!
    very good speaker
pure android experience, swift, lots of security updates

cons: bit big for a screen size
    finger scanner could be better

    • +2

we turn off stuff like locations and gps when not being used and it saves a lot of battery, as does turn off unneeded notifications …….
many people have lots of non essential stuff running much of the time ….. do you need location services running while asleep or at the office ?

the a1 cost us $250. …. it’s good value for money, and we have had no issues with battery, apps or performance.

  • Anyone has experience from this shop? Would it be better to get the redmi note 5 from catch.com?
