  • You must be stupid to use avalon for $4 less. Unless of course you're going to the avalon air show or live in geelong.

    • tbh avalon is a straight forward airport u go into departure on one side and arrivals the other the only good thing about that airport is cause it's cheap that's all i also wouldn't recommend avalon too far taking a cab was way to expensive rather just pay the extra for tullamarine so in other words voter1 nicely said except for the stupid part :S

    • Avalon is about an extra 30 mins trip by bus to Melbourne CBD than Tullamarine. And the shuttle bus ticket costs about $10 more. So you don't end up saving any money by landing at Avalon & you spend an hour longer on the bus getting back & forth to Melbourne!!

Further, there are shuttle buses back & forth to Tullamarine every 10 mins, but only about 1 bus per hour to Avalon. So you have to take an earlier bus from the city to be sure to make your flight. So you lose another 30-45 minutes there.

And the facilities at Avalon are basic. So it is a very dull place to spend 2 hours before you fly out…

All up, it's definitely worth paying more for the convenience of Tullamarine.

this is false advertising, you get to the section that says you add 20kg of baggage and its an extra $30 - what a con

plus there is the 'we don't give a Removed by mod customer service phone line from tiger' - try ringing it it gets you nowhere

book with Jetstar or Virgin blue - they publish the EXACT FARE and are HONEST

    • +1

It's not false advertising, because you CAN get the flight for $24.95. Of course it means you need to travel with carry-on only, pay with Debit Mastercard, arrive on time and checked in via web, etc etc.

Besides, Jetstar and Virgin also charge extra for checked in baggage, paying by credit card, and a myriad of other ancillary charges. Only difference is that you get to choose the extras before you get to the final page. Hell even Qantas charges a ridiculous $7.70 per passenger for credit card "fee", so don't act like Tiger is the only crook in the aviation industry.

  • Avalon is rather far from Melb.

Not everyone lives in Melbourne you know.

    tiger air way = FAIL!

agree - will never fly them again after 2 extremely bad experiences.
return flight melbourne to canberra = 50 min flight each way
Departure there was a 2hr delay and returning there was a 3hr delay
It would have been quicker and easier to drive!

Their phone support desk was rubbish - couldn't even tell me when they expect the flight to departure offering advice 'just to go to the airport and see'. Their online flight tracking system didn't even list my flight.

In the end it was more expensive too as I had to pay for a long taxi ride home in Melbourne as the flight was delayed so much so that when I returned it was after the last trains were running.

I have to agree. Tiger Airways is crap. My dad has flown with them twice. Hobart to Melbourne - they had 'overbooked' his flight so he had to wait ~7 hours for their next flight. The next time he flew Melbourne to Hobart - got to the airport and they had cancelled his flight so he had catch their next flight which was the following day. Cheap flights but very unreliable. I doubt he'll be flying with them again.

Whilst I wholeheartedly agree, I wouldn't neg the deal based on it! ;)

The price is good; however, whilst some folks are happy with Tiger…caveat emptor I say! :p

    Umm, good luck flying tiger….

Here's a tip instead, make sure flights are within 1hr from Jetstar flights and call Jetstar instead and ask for a price beat. I beat tiger airways cheap flights from Brisbane to Melbourne return for 2 adults ($200)

    • 100% agree. With Jetstar's price match policy there's no reason anyone needs to fly Tiger.

    • +1 - nice tip, will use in future.

  • +2

Yes I wouldn't bother with tiger. I just pricematch with jetstar. There was an article from the SMH last year saying that Tiger cancelled 18% of its flights in 2009.

  • +1

i wont vote negative, but I too hate tiger.

they offer cheap flights at different times, then cancel earlier flights so they squash everyone into the one flight later. that's fine if you booked on that later flight, but if you wanted to get somewhere at an earlier time/flight…. you're stuffed sitting at the airport for hours.

cheap flights with tiger end up costing you more in frustration… but I guess from a strictly $$ viewpoint, $25 IS cheap for a flight.

  • I've never had a real issue with them flying internationally, domestic have had a delay but I figure that into my plans when booking

  • +1

Looks good to me for a Jetstar price beat, as their flights are within the hour.
I just got 2 adult Jetstar Return tickets AVV - SYD for $89.82 !!

  • Never go with tiger again

  • It seems a great price though I've been told to be wary of tiger as their customer service is quite poor. It seems a very common belief that tiger is the worst of the 3 main budget airlines.

  • +2

Guaranteed your tiger flight will be late.

  • -1

    Tiger = CRAP.

  • I should have pricematched at Jetstar (I missed that advice) … I'll just hope we are on the 82% of flights that don't get cancelled :)

Booked earlier today to take my 11 year old son to Sydney with a friend for the day … scheduled to arrive 8.15am, depart 8.45pm, so I hope they don't cancel the morning flight.

$28.95 plus $7.20 for using the credit card on each sector. Clearly the Visa card fees are a profit contributor being 25% additional cost (whereas Tiger are probably only charged around 2% or less. (NB. Mastercard is free.)

    My 3 experiences with Tiger:

    1. Melbourne-Alice, just over three years ago, they cancelled the first trip, when they hadn't agreed terms on their Melbourne terminal and gave us a small credit to use later (which we didn't). Months later when we could take this trip they lost key luggage and it was waiting for us in Melbourne 6 days later when we got back from our trip to Ulluru. (I had to ring Singapore to get any answers to my queries; NO reply from the Australian numbers.)
    2. Sydney-Melbourne My wife arrived 40 mins before departure time, ie. 5 minutes late. So lost that ticket.
    3. One no dramas trip.

I don't have a problem with getting there 45 minutes early, or with the 'extras', but I won't be happy (for the kids) if the flight is cancelled.

  • Ah, I wished I returned back to this page before booking the ticket. Hopefully things would be okay. :x

Thanks for the jetstar price match tip though!

Tiger is definitely crap. I've flown with them twice and both times they delayed my flight until the next available one so that they could fill the airplane up. Never take the earliest flight! I missed all my appointments :P

    BUT, the WORSE thing was:
During check-in, my luggage weighed at 15.7 (over by 0.7) and they refused to let me get through so I took my 3 work files out (they were surprisingly heavy) and it dropped to 14.2. I immediately said, "let me put one file back" and the rude check-in girl said "You can't." I asked "why?", she said "because I've locked in the weight & you're too late". (this was like seconds apart)

Taking a deep breath, I told myself "okay, I'll let this go"… when the rude check-in girl said "Put your carry-on bag on the scale". Because of the 3 files I took out of my check-in luggage, my carry-on bag was now 7.7 or 7.8kg (0.7 or 0.8 over).

(For those who don't know, you're allowed 7kg cabin luggage.)

So she asked me to pay for 1 extra KG.

    What the heck!??!

Anyway, I grabbed my bag, glared at her and walked into the waiting area without caring/paying. I had enough. No one stopped me, probably because it was carry-on but then again, the look on my face must have been pretty murderous.

i dont think all the tiger ground staff actually work for Tiger, a company called aerocare?

Because the person that checked me in on the sunshine coast was doing Virgin on the return.

    • Wow! The things you learn on OzBargain.
