Anybody used this model? What is the sound quality like?

  • The speaker is 0.5 watts so pretty standard I'd say, but has a headphone jack which you can plug into an external speaker system :)

Thanks for the coupon code just used it

    I think:

    . good that it (I trust) runs on 240 V AC;
    otherwise it'd be a fast "battery-eater"
& too costly to run as a portable unit

(So, from us, it gets a big NEGATIVE tick)

    By contrast:

    My little pocket-sized "transistor radio"
uses 3 AA's & lasts for weeks, even if I
forget to turn it Off when I'm at Office.

THINK how HEAVY it'll be to SHLEPP an Akai
when walking camping, hiking, biking, etc.

This one needs 6x AA's. Even they get HEAVY.

And… almost TWICE as heavy, with a 2nd set
of batteries, in another bag; 12x AA's all up.

(Think of the environment: Are we disposing
of all those extra batteries correctly, yet?)

I think I saw/heard one playing, through some
    -large- speakers (at OfficeWorks) recently…

(I'd say: Wait for the Digital-Radio / Internet-
    Radio combo's from Roberts (already $203 @ H-N)
or costly Sangean. but cheaper (even in AU)
on eBay or purchased online (eg, from Melb),
via Internet; Google (if not eBay) is your friend,
here; either will be heavier; a Roberts takes 6x D's
which is my idea of HONESTY in Engineering. ;-)

    Here's our Take-Away Message:

. In flood / bushfire prone areas:

. "DON'T USE =THIS= AS AN EMERGENCY RADIO"

. UNLESS you have HEAPS of batteries for it
    . AND you take (& don't lose) headphones…
. 'cause it's NOISY in an Evacuation Center

Otherwise, it sounded ok through OfficeWorks'
    -huge- computer speakers… ;-)

PS Is there a 12 V DV "lighter-plug" for it,
. ie, for in-car use (eg, as an accessory)?

  • i already have a bush dab radio which is similar to this and works great. This akai runs off mains power and aa batteries i think your negative post is in general for all portable dab radio and not about this product and its price. I do agree old transistor radio use alot less power but in a few years all there will be is dab radio and dtv analouge will no longer be an option. I only use this around the house so its perfect

    • I don't think they have plans to turn off analogue radio anytime soon.
This price is alright, but I think I'll hold off abit longer so prices come down and variety increases.
I've heard a dab+ device and other than good reception audio quality doesn't seem any better than the FM and AM stations I listen too. I read somewhere the bitrate is low =/

  • The technology is still new and power usage is the major problem when comparing to the old transistor radio. There is no real benefit DAB has over the the old analogue.

    • A friend of mine got a MP3 player size DAB+ radio, so the power consumption can be low. Also he didn't have to listen to the cricket because of the large number of other ABC stations so he counts that as an advantage. :)

  • There are extra digital only stations available, and also the display can be used for useful things like song-name playing and other info (although that comes down to the stations themselves). There's also the reception advantage, where you'll usually get better signal unless you're in marginal range.

Like for digital tv, some will want to go sooner and others later, so it's personal choice as to when.

Are the people talking down this deal actually talking about the deal or are they giving their opinion as to the relevance of digital radio or the amount of power DAB+ devices consume.

Where else can you find a digital radio for $45 delivered in Oz currently ?

Personally I think digital radio is awesome, I have one at work and can get clear sound listening to ABC news radio at work, previously this was an impossibility. Even better the screen scrolls important news / weather / what ever else the station decides to put out there.

    • I also got coments from elswhere from somone who owned one, that this AKAI digital radio does not produce as good a sound as other brands. It was said to have a tinny sound from the mono speaker. And is also oversized compared to other models and brands.

  • Yes I mainly listen to Talk Radio and the BBC World Service that SBS broadcast is great :)

On my old AM radio I used to get alot of interference from other electrical appliances around the house but with Digital it works perfect.

  • Just got mine works great comes with A/C Adapter and it is smaller then my Bush DAB Radio. Volume is also pretty decent on the internal speaker. :)
