  • what irks me is the spin drives lose more space the bigger they are, this one you probably get around 3.6TB

It depends on your OS. Manufacturers and Unix based systems (Mac/Linux etc.) calculate the capacity in decimal capacity (1KB = 1000 bytes or 1TB = 1000MB) but Windows calculates capacity in Binary (1KB = 1024bytes or 1TB = 1024MB). Mac and Linux will show the full 4TB capacity as a result and Windows will only show 3.638TB due to the difference.

      • '1TB = 1000MB'

        or 1TB = 1000GB

Yeah you know what I meant ;)

    • +1

4 x 1TB drives would have the same total capacity.

      • +3

or 55 x 73Gb drives would also have the same total capacity.

        • Wow that spins me out, so many 73GB SCSI drives over the years running so many businesses i looked after.
15Ks performed so well in their time, now i have USB thumb drives bigger and faster…

    • It's just how it's calculated.

    • +4

      Well acktually…

The 4 TB (terabyte) rating on the drive means precisely 4,000,000,000,000 bytes. That translates to 3.63 TiB (tebibyte), which Windows - and most people - simply call terabytes.

It's kind of the same idea as selling something in CM rather than inches, the number of CM always sounds bigger than inches.

  • Works with PS4 Pro?

Is the warranty covered in here?

  • do we know if what is inside is an archive or NAS drive, or model Seagate inside ?

    • It's a SMR based drive so it is kinda like the archive one. Seagate indicated it is a mixture of PMR and SMR, but if it has SMR, I would consider it as a SMR drive.

Hard to find 4TB portable hard drive that's NOT using SMR though.

  • Bought. Thanks, OP. Have now used up all my credit balance.

  • Just wanted to share with you the features and specs on the Seagate Expansion 4TB Portable External Hard Drive.

    • Will you elaborate on whether the back up plus model is better than this model?. as per DAT's below link.

  • +3

How about spending a bit extra and 5TB one?

    https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Portable-External-Photography…

    • IMO better, and it's also the backup 'plus' model.

    • damn…. ;-)

      • I know right !?, the back up plus is lighter AND has 2 year warranty vs 1.

  • Soldered or removable drive inside?
