  • How does it recharge?
Edit: Hopefully via the connecting USB cable
coz a US electric socket connector would be annoying

    • US socket isnt really annoying - u can get an adapter on ebay for $1 or $2 at your $2 shop.

plus its just a USB wall charger, aka ipod wall charger or a multitude of other devices that use the same thing these days.

And they complain complain about people ordering stuff from overseas! For those who don't know, Borders is part of the group of retailers whining about online shopping.

  • +1

    It's $99.99, not $99.00 :O)

    • ^ Okay! I changed it, just for you.

      • Wow, so enthusiastic. I want a 99 too!

  • it has wifi so can you use it surf the internet like an ipad?

    • Nope

    • the Cruz reader allows you to surf the web (in colour!), it's $20 extra on their site

      http://www.borders.com/online/store/MediaView_cruz-reader

      • isnt that just like those generic android ipads around? the best thing about this is the battery life, it doesnt need things added to it to cripple battery life.

      • You should check out colour vs e-ink in stores here before ordering online. Personally, I would prefer e-ink over colour for a device that I will have close to my eyes for extended periods of time.

    • +1

Well it has wifi, so you can buy books. I'm sure a hack will come along to add web browsing.

      edit.

      You can.

9 usd shipping is really good. Usually US shipping is extortionate.

    shame i cant read :/

    • How did you get it to be $9? I dont see it. Do you need to login?

      • +1

i just read the title :P

        • LOL
i though that was figure you made up for the OP to post

          shame i cant read :/

How did you get it to be $9? I dont see it. Do you need to login?

i would only make sense if you made up the figure as i couldn't find it either :)

I wonder what Borders AUS will be saying about it? LOL!

    Good deal!

I don't think at the old price they could compete with Kindle 3. Kobo Wifi is more open, supports more stores, supports Overdrive rentals from libraries, has SD card etc. But Kindle 3 is faster.

  • There are two main things keeping me from getting an e-reader.
    1) A lot of the books I read aren't available in e-format. Especially text books etc…
    2) The prices are hardly cheaper and sometimes even more expensive than their paper based cousins.

    • i think he major upside to things is carrying one cool thing and show off in the train rather than carry an old book like everyone else

      • -1

Major upside is carrying 1000 books in something that will fit in your pocket, rather than a several bookcases that are a pig to move when you have to.

As for securing the content you want and the extortionate pricing they attempt to charge, that's addressable and I'm sure the book sellers will be forced to adapt to real world pricing as a result.

eBook readers will do to the book world what MP3 players did to the music one.

  • Wait, is this eink? Says up to 10hrs battery life, sound like could be LCD.

    • +1

Sorry, it's eink, never mind. Still wondering why it says up to 10hr battery life.

  • Worth noting that Borders in the US is in deep financial strife. I was looking at one website yesterday that suggested they might not be around much longer. Not sure what this will mean for support etc. Still a good find though.

    • Kobo is still a standalone brand, just like how they stock sony ereaders. Kobo is not a bad company either and their software can be found on smartphones like blackberry.

In other words, if borders goes down the drain and you want to return it, you might have problems :P but otherwise there's kobo for support and other online book stores to get books at :P

  • website is now down. order was canceled as item out of stock

    • hrm…didn go all the way thru the checkout, but up front, the black one says out of stock/on back order…white one still in stock. didnt check lavendar.

      • lavender is on back order too. Still managed to put an order for the lavender one through just fine.

  • +3

LOL at the George W Bush book.

I'm sure its very short with big letters and small words

    • +2

      and pictures -high definition crayon.

  • Wish I hadn't bought the kobo from Borders on boxing day now :S.

Still, its a good reader, battery seems to last around 3-4 weeks as long as you remember to power it off rather than putting it in sleep mode.

    • How does your Kobo go reading PDF's? This is the deal-maker/breaker for me.

      • Never tried, I convert everything to epub through calibre.

    • sounds kind of annoying, having to power off

  • Just wondering if it is possible to just copy txt and fb2 files on this device and read them ?
and probably another question. does it support pdf documents ?

    • no txt,no html or doc. you gotta convert them using calibre. not sure about fb2 files but maybe calibre can convert them too. looks like it does support pdf documents.

  • I have a kindle 3 and was considering this for my partner. Issues: limited file format support, i.e: no html, no txt, no doc. If you are willing to use calibre to convert these documents to ePub then this is for you. The other issue is that the page turns are slow, so users actually press the next page when reading the last 2 lines.. that is unacceptable for me as with the Kindle 3, its instantaneous.. nevertheless its a damn good deal for a branded eInk based reader for ~ $110AUD delivered.

  • Does anyone know if there are any issues with buying US product (other than needing an adapter or getting a generic usb power cord for aust plugs)? Ie. any differences between this one and the one sold in Borders Aust, e.g. different version, different firmware, other compatability issues?

Obviously I couldn't go to my local Borders if something went wrong with it, i'm just concerned about getting it and finding out I can't connect to a specific store or some other issue (I believe Amazon has some issues like this with their US store and what Aussies can access).

    Thanks

    • Will be the same version and firmware. The kobo only comes with a USB cable, no Power adapter so there's no conflict there either.
Only issue I can think of is warranty and you may have to get the borders kobo software from someone with a local version, though you only need that if you want to use their store.

      • Thanks!

  • Just ordered, thank you, I was waiting for this! It should last me long enough until colour epaper units with touchscreens and mobile web browsing becomes standard.

  • Got my kindle 3 3G for 200USD, still happy with that. Cant beat free 3G world wide, and the fantastically ease of use - unmatchable.

That said, the next generation of ereaders is due soonish and purportedly have XGA resolution instead of the current SVGA stuff.

Colour may or maynot be widely available in the coming gen. likely not.

    • Am looking at a kindle now hah… how'd you get it for that price? Just off amazon's website?

      • yes you have two options:

        1. order off amazon's international kindle page, shipping about $20
        2. order off amazon's usa kindle page, free shipping to your forwarding service, then pay the forwarder about $20 as well.

the latter takes a bit longer, but gets you a free adaptor for charging. also the latter takes longer, may or maynot be cheaper. (i used the hopshopgo free ship promo)

  • I got a Kindle too. I had a play with the Kobo and Sony eReader at Borders and still prefer the Kindle. The pages turn faster on the Kindle.

  • Expired

  • I ordered a black Kobo last night off the Borders US website for 99.99 + shipping… woke up this morning to see "Unfortunately, one or more of the items that you ordered has been cancelled either at your request or because the item(s) are not available.", and my order was cancelled. The item is still selling on their website.

What the hell?! Had just bought a cover for it as well. Money down the drain and no ebook reader. Mightily upset…

    • I wrote back pretty much asking WTF as the white one I ordered is still in stock. Not happy.

      • Yeah me too. As far as I'm concerned, I have a contract. This is pretty ridiculous - would let it go but for the fact I've already paid for the cover (which will be delivered next week - not much use without a reader!)

        • I wrote back too but no response yet. Annoying.

  • Order was cancelled overnight. Maybe Borders Australia had something to do with it.

  • Has anyone's order not been cancelled?

    • Does anyone feel like speaking on our behalf to Amazon to arrange a deal? They don't have a local store to protect so perhaps they can be more honest! I haven't heard back from Borders yet on what happened to our orders.

    • My order hasn't been cancelled yet:
"Thank you for your Borders.com order! Your order status will be available via the Order History page shortly. We will send you another email at the time your order ships. "

Ordered the lavender one which is on back-order.

    • Mine hasn't been cancelled either. Same situation as hellbound with the white version. The order status site says it's currently on back-order, but the borders.com website is allowing the purchase of the white kobo with a 24hr ship time. Strange…

      • Just got a shipment notification.

  • I got a response where they suggested I just order it again, I wrote back asking how I would order it again for the discounted price…

    • Same here. They sent me the stupidest instructions on how to use their website. Arrrgggghhh!
