  • For those in WA, Retravision have the Strong 5423 (which does same as STB above) for $69, but can easily be had for $60 : )

    • -3

Why not just get one at Aldi?

      • +3

Cause us lowly WA people don't have Aldi.

        • +4

WTF? That is enough of a reason to move to the east coast :)

        • SE coast, none up north.

      • +3

        Q) What's the time difference between the east coast and WA?

        A) 3 hours……….and 10 years

        • +1

when you look at the map, there's a perforated line for a reason…

    • I wish we had Aldi! Thanks for the alternative though. How do you get it for $60 instead of $69?

      • +1

I just said to the guy "is it cool if you do that for $60" and he said "yep" : )

    • According to a poster on Whirpool - Harvey Norman had the Strong model for $48 a couple of weeks ago.
      http://whrl.pl/RcBrkB

      • Yeah I saw that, but no Harvey Norman I contacted had one as of last week…

      • They were this price last weekend when I was over at a HN Belrose store Sydney. They had a whole big stack of them on the floor.

        • Looks like WA wins again : (

Hmm I need something to replace my almost borked SD STB from Woolworths. Anyone know if this outputs to anything else other than HDMI? I'd probably need RCA/S-Video. What formats of files does this play? Maybe worth taking a punt and returning it within 60 days if it's no good.

    • Cheaper ones dont. It shd come with RCA connection. It will come with RCA cable too.
I have DGTech, it does have HDMI, S Video, RCA, Component. But they used to sell over 100 dollars.
If you want to connect it to ur computer, u can use HDMI to VGA converter from ebay :)

  • Returning my 2 HD set top boxes I bought there a few weeks ago for $69 each. Love Aldi's 60 satisfaction guarantee!!

Just bought the Bauhn twin tuner 500gb for 199.00 on special, its a great price for a good machine (touch wood) so far records 2 channels flawlessly

    • +11

so far records 2 channels flawlessly

why doesn't it work with the other 15 channels ???

      • lol i meant at the same time

  • +2

a lot of these units record in TS format, it's still editable on pcs
ps i see Aldi have bought back the $14.99 men's shaver, do yourself(and your skin!) a favor, don't buy it! i got one before, after use skin feels like it's on fire, doesn't cut properly and battery life is miserable

  • Definitely get one of these, wish we didn't have to wait though.

  • Does it have a remote? None mentioned in the advert, or as a feature.

  • Anyone know if you can play back divx avi's through the usb?

    • +2

its a PVR and does MPEG4 (DIVX) doubt it does H264 though… (full HD stuff)

I got one of the little TVIX boxes a while ago… love it… any PVR you get should have a network connection. (and space for a 2.5" hdd)

  • why aren't there more DVD + Set top box all-in-one combos?

    I had a bush(?) one.

    one remote control.

plugged into an CRT (which had no remote) and it was great.

    • I have one, but it's only a SD set top box. Missing out on some good channels due to this!

    • Rip your DVDs to Hard Disk and play them back via a box like this (Video Jukebox style).

  • +1

Damn no aldi in SA, keep missing these deals.

  • Does anyone know how large the recorded files are likely to be? I'm curious as to what capacity USB drive to use.

    • +1

On average SD is about 3GB / hour and HD is about 5GB / hour

  • The best thing with ALDI is when they have excess stock of their units especially the electronics, they sell them at clearance prices in a few weeks. On the few items i was reluctant to buy when it came out, I ended up buying them anyway as the prices are cut in half just so they can have space in their stores!! But they also run out of stock on the first day so if you want items that bad, buy it. The have a good return policy if it doesnt work out.

  • Pretty disappointed, all sold out.
Went to Aldi Ringwood about an hour ago, had none & the guy said they're sold out in all aldis.

    • All Aldis? as in the whole of Australia?

    • Well I guess that saves me from heading down there. Thanks

  • Just sent the wife to the Werribee Aldi and picked one up. There are apparently 12 left there.

  • after going to seven hills then blacktown then quakers hill then baulkham hills.. i i finally got one @ wentworthville.. i got the 2nd last one :D

  • Got to say, I'm very impressed with this STB especially for $40.

    • Flicking between channels is faster than my 5 year old Safeway SD STB and my Samsung plasma. Yep, upgraded from a Safeway STB to an ALDI one.

    • Remote is very light but it makes a loud click when you change channels or the volume.

    • When tuning into a channel it tells you what's on and what's coming up next.

    • It plays back normal XVID avi's as well as 720p MKV's (TV shows). I did try it with some 720P BR ripped and while the picture and the directors commentary worked, the regular audio didn't. Not sure why that would happen.

    • Outputs are RCA, HDMI, and CYK (I think that's called composite out?)

    • Other negative points on this box:

      • it only goes up to 1080i output, no 1080p
      • the EPG has no 'grid' view, just a list of show times for each channel, one at a time.
      • the channel up/down sometimes doesn't seem to register the click.
      • can't find any way to edit the channels or their order, so you can end up with multiple copies of the same channel

I've not tried recording to hard disk yet, but I think there is a good chance of being able to rip the resulting .ts files to normal container formats for storage.

Power consumption 4W in operation, and 0W turned off (or at least unmeasurable)

All in all its a reasonable, cheap, box.

Re: Editing channels, It's in the instruction booklet.

        Menu-Program Edit-

You have a choice of moving deleting etc.

Good to hear it's using very little power on standby. I noticed it makes a barely audible high pitched sound when turned off.

        • +1

Ahhh, instruction booklets. Like any good male, I tend to ignore those ;-)

And what's channel editing doing under program edit? That sounds like editing recording schedule to me.

          Thanks for the pointer anyway.

Now to try to get the remote recognised in my Harmony remote, so I can junk the existing on.

  • Bought 1 from Penrith. They have more than a dozen left as of yesterday.

  • Went to 5 stores yesterday, all sold out. If anyone picked up an extra they dont want or knows of any still available in Melb please let me know!

looked like 3 more were going out to display in the cabinet for sale.

i had to ask for one thou, then it was brought out.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/39040
