    • I believe Paypal accounts needs to be verified before they can be used?

      • +1

Nope. Only when total transactions exceed 1k

        • dont think you can use paypal for aliexpress?

        • That's not what I experienced. When I open a new paypal account and try to transfer money to my friend it won't allow me.

        • Are you sure, even for withdrawal of any amount less than 1k?

      • great!!!

    • deleted my post

  • +4

    This is really weird.

What's their end game? Are they paying $20 for a list of peoples VIN numbers, ID, personal details?

    • +11

Maybe gumtree got hacked by a Nigerian prince

      • +1

Nah, it was an oil rig worker

    • +4

Their aim is to compete with Carsales and become the go to place when selling your car. Much like what Carsales did when they advertised 'pay $5 to sell your car until sold' unlike Trading Post who were the monopoly and were charging an arm and a leg for newspaper ads limited to 25 words. We all know what happened to Trading Post.

Believe it or not, I had this idea of paying people to advertise their goods, not just cars. Why? Rather than having a budget of $1million in advertising and not knowing what you're going to get in return, you are effectively ensuring 50,000 listings for $1m. That's almost a 1/4 of what Carsales has on their website.

Just listed my $80k investment. Pocketed $20.

Finally my $80k investment pays off by 0.025%. My boss at Westpac will be impressed.

    • +2

Keep an eye out for your promotion letter

Generally 80k investment car jokes got really old a long time ago, this one is an exception.

    • Each eligible individual who completes the above steps during the Promotion Period will receive a reward of $20 (Australian Dollars) deposited into the balance of their linked PayPal account on or around 6 June.

Probably meant to be 6 July.

    • +1

me too just listed my car. Did u write EOFY on description ?
      My description is like this

      EOFY

GOOD Condtion, Long rego. Nil issues

      Perfect car for learners

  • Perfect timing. Was just about to list my car.

And when GumTree call and threaten you for making a false offer:

"I had every intention of selling it, but everyone who contacted me offered under 50% of my listing price, so I gave up".

    • +4

“Hey boss I get the funny feeling some of the hundreds of people claiming the $20 aren’t legit. Do you think we should tighten the controls somehow? Or is the amount small enough to for us to just disregard it?”
“What?! No! Call each one and threaten them”

If your Gumtree account is suspended at any time before payment of the reward, you will not be eligible to receive the reward.

I'm guessing that there will have actual humans doing some kind of moderation and IP checks to make sure you're not gaming the system. They do have some kind of duplicate detection system from the last time I tested.

      • Question, if someone genuinely offered $50k for your car what would you do? Everything is for sale.

      • +1

        What's the household associated with?

  • +1

This is going to end badly for gumtree

    • +1

It costs them $20 and they gain circa $0 irrespective of whether you’re really selling or not, it really makes no difference. They’re simply trying to mess with CarSales marketshare metrics.

    • +1

They've probably got a lot of money left over to use for promotion before the new financial year and this is a quick way to boost listings for used cars which will work well for them as mentioned in previous comments.
Imagine how much they could spend on a billboard or TV spot, this is comparable.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Hi all, How long does it take for the credit to hit the account once posted?

    Cheers

  • +6

This is just a ploy to get people to link their PayPal accounts to their Gumtree accounts.

I refuse to accept anything other than Cash (in-person) for Gumtree transactions due to the high number of fraudsters operating on it.

    • too right…CASH ONLY on Gumtree. especially for cars.

      • For anything. It's just far too easy for someone to pickup something and then complain to PayPal for a refund, or action a bank chargeback, etc….

    • +1

I guess we can un-link PayPal after that?

  • +3

my two cents - sold two cars and spent over $600 on premium ads - the ONLY way to really sell your car is on FB, marketplace and FB Groups. My level on enquiry was 10x the others. Gumtree would be second but expect alot of 'pls email me only on gmail' fraudsters, but you do get some enquiries. Carsales.com.au was absolutely garbage and total waste of $300.

    • +3

I think very few people are actually trying to sell their car on Gumtree right now lol

  • +3

Wow gumtree just went full retard lol.

They're trying to increase awareness on their car selling section… But all this will do is turn people off due to all the fake car ads.

  • +7

Just did a gumtree search of cars using EOFY… :-). I'd hate to think people may be taking advantage but…for ex.. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/booval/cars-vans-utes/2008-h…

    • LOL, we should all send a question to that account.

    • I inquired…

      Hi Sean Priman,

I would like to offer $500?

Is there anything I need to know about it?

      When can I inspect it?

      Please contact me.

      Thanks!

    • +6

Good chance it's someone on here!

  • Thanks OP, this will help offset the money I had to pay to put it up on Carsales :)

  • Time to get professional.

    • Wall hasnt being built yet, all good

  • +1

This is the best comments thread I have read in a good while!!

  • +2

They can always say it was a price error (it was 20c) and it was fraud (coffee club)

  • +1

    Real Question, whats the catch?

  • Would it in any way be illegal to post an ad with a false VIN??

    • +7

      Would you download a car?

    • They might have an argument for fraud but then they'd have to go after half the ads posted. Why not just use a real & verifiable VIN? It's not like anyone can use it for anything.

  • +2

    dammit i'm getting real inquiries

    • I'm actually trying to sell my car and am getting nothing :(

  • +1

The easiest thing i ever sold on gumtree was a car, guy rang and came and looked at it on Weekend came back Monday with cash, 7K. Done and dusted didn't even try and haggle.
    iPhones what a nightmare.

  • +1

Yea the abuse is real for this, and yea they just want people's PayPal and maybe boast the car sales side of things, but! I actually listed my car legitimately with a price I'd sell for, genuinely interested in knowing what the actual market value of my ride is.

    Thanks OP!

      Not negotiable?

    • Cash in hand baby!

    • Awww, they deleted my ad….without reason either…not even an email stating why it was deleted….. ☹

I guess I'll just relist it…..perhaps the next time they're email me a reason why it(this) was deleted….

  • +5

Have been receiving spam SMS/calls/emails. Beware.

  • +9

Thanks OP. I was about to list my old Commodore anyway, and the $20 represents a substantial percentage of the price I am selling it for!

  • +1

listed my car. received a text stating someone was interested in my car and to send an email to some address.

    something weird with that.

why send a text to then request an email?

why not message me on gumtree?

and that was with only 2 views on the listing.

    • +5

Probably a bot to get you to contact them outside of Gumtree's communication channel so you can be duped.
